MINNEAPOLIS: Maryland ex-chief is reportedly up for top police post (Moose Alert)
Pioneer Press ^ | Nov 16, 2003 | Associated Press

Former Montgomery County, Md., Police Chief Charles Moose, who often spoke for the law enforcement community during the investigation of last year's Washington-area sniper attacks, has applied to be the next police chief in Minneapolis, the Star Tribune reported Saturday.

The Minneapolis-based newspaper said unidentified sources confirmed Moose was one of 26 applicants.

Moose's wife, Sandy, told the Associated Press from her Maryland home Saturday the family had no comment and said her husband was unavailable. A spokeswoman for Minneapolis Mayor R.T. Rybak told the AP he is prohibited by law from disclosing the names of applicants until finalists are selected.

Moose, 50, was a keynote speaker at an Oct. 31 terrorism symposium in Anoka, and he hinted at a news conference he was looking for a new chief's job if the right opportunity presented itself.

Police and county officials who know Moose say he is highly regarded for his leadership skills and ability to communicate with the public. He resigned as Montgomery County chief in June to write a book about the manhunt for the snipers who killed 10 people.

The list of applicants for the Minneapolis chief's job isn't public, but several internal candidates have confirmed that they applied.

Current Chief Robert Olson's contract will expire in January, and Rybak has said he won't renew it.

The city expects to interview finalists on Dec. 13-14 and to extend an offer before the holidays, said Rybak's spokeswoman, Laura Sether.

Moose worked in Portland, Ore., from 1975 to 1999 and was chief for the last six of those years. After Portland, he went to Montgomery County, which has 1,100 sworn officers. Minneapolis has about 810.

Will he have time to devote to his new duties, if hired? What with all the movie endorcements, acting jobs, books to be written, autograph parties, how will he ever work that police job into his busy schedule?

I keep remembering when DC was looking for a Fire Chief, The folks he had been working for gave him rave reviews, said how great he was. After DC finally fired the guy they went back and asked his previous employers why they had given him such rave reviews. They said because we wanted to get rid of him and the easiest way was for you people to hire him away from us.

Rules for Chief Moose:

Don't laugh at the names of our little towns: Fertile, Moorhead, Climax, Cummings, Gentilly, or we will just HAVE to kick your butt.

Don't order a bottle or a can of soda here. Up here it's called Pop. Accept it. Doing otherwise can lead to a butt kicking.

Yes, we know that ice fishing is "not your thing." We don't care. If you don't understand the beauty of being out on a lake when it's 10 below zero, go home . Also, if you hog the heater in the fish house we'll kick your butt.

) Don't ridicule our mannerisms. We only speak when spoken to. We hold doors open for others. We offer our seats to old folks because such things are expected of civilized people. Behave yourselves around our sweet, little gray-haired grandmothers or they will kick some manners into your butt just like they did ours.

Don't order the vegetarian special at the local diner. Everyone will instantly know that you're a tourist. Eat your steak rare like God intended and have some potatoes with that, for heaven's sake! Also, don't ask what a hot dish is or we'll kick your butt.

When someone thanks you, reply with a "you betcha".

"Former Montgomery County, Md., Police Chief Charles Moose, who often spoke for the law enforcement community........."

As if. He speaks only for himself.

The Moose concealed crucial information from the law enforcement community! If he'd revealed all he knew, the snipers would have been caught several weeks sooner.

I know big cities do things differently, but it seems like they would want to hire from within. Someone who knows the community and the force.

St. Paul has a Police Chief right now who is a life long resident. Mpls. goes outside. I think it makes them feel they're cosmopolitan. They'll probably hire Moose. Shudder.
