Sen. Ted Kennedy called President Bush's judicial nominees "Neanderthals" on Friday, a group that includes Hispanic lawyer Miguel Estrada and African-American Judge Janice Rogers Brown. Boasting of his party's resolve in the face of GOP attempts to stop their filibuster, Kennedy told the Senate, "What has not ended is the resolution and the determination of the members of the United States Senate to continue to resist any Neanderthal that is nominated by this president of the United States for any court, federal court in the United States."
Kennedy's overtly racist language stunned even liberal CNN correspondent Jonathan Karl, who reported, "Strong words from Ted Kennedy suggesting that some of these nominees are Neanderthals."
Karl said Kennedy's harsh tone was "exactly what Republicans point to when they say it is the Democrats that have been the extremists on this."

C-Span has all of these press conferences on Real Video, so yes, I saw it. He said that his constitutional obligation to vote is being denied to him, that he has "standing" as a Senator, and he's going to look for a lawyer to take this to the Supreme Court.

Well now, let's see what we have. The Neanderthals were fat, stupid, hairy and treated their women like dirt. Eventually, they were pushed from the public stage by human beings, who were smarter and more able.
I will concede that Teddy Kennedy is an expert on Neanterthals, and may be the last surviving member of the tribe. I question, however, his judgment that any of Bush's judicial nominees are like him. The only unknown factor in the comparison of Teddy to the Neanderthals is the drinking habits of those early hominoids. Ah well, no analogy is ever perfect.

I suggest he should be forced into the same Senate purgatory as Trent Lott. Whatever committee he leads (on the Dem side), demand that he resign from it.
If what Lott said was so offensive, Kennedy should be hounded for his statement as well.

yeah -- he said that early this morning. whether scotus will touch it is problematic, though. a far more effective approach would be for the senate republicans to stop being such candyasses. ted kennedy, looking and sounding more and more like larry flynt, makes his insane statement and orrin hatch begins his response by saying what a good friend of his the senior lardtrust from massachusetts is. well, dammit, orrin -- having ted kennedy as a friend is scarcely something to be proud of. he oughtn't be your friend. and we oughtn't keep doing this "thank you, sir, may i have another" routine with the democrats. if we've learned nothing else in the last two days, we've learned that these people cannot be worked with. what we *can* do is choke 'em off -- keep the pork out of their states. that's how the democrats achieved power to begin with, during the roosevelt administration. we can suck all the oxygen out of their political careers. we can ruin them. and when we have 100 republican senators, we can start choking the money off from states who have democrat governors. and we can do it with a smile on our face and love in our hearts because we happen to be right. what we need to be doing is not saying that corpulent, cirrhotic pusbags are our good friends but instead driving them to metaphorical if not actual suicide.

The infamous "waitress sandwich" took place in the upstairs front room of
La Brasserie, a French restaurant in the 300 block of Massachusetts Ave, across the street from Heritage Foundation. I spent many an evening in that restaurant, and went there to see the beginning of Gulf War I on TV, in the downstairs bar.
At least, as of ten years ago, members of the staff there would confirm (once you got to know them) the truth of the "waitress sandwich" story.

Why are these seditious reprobates not being tried for treason? It is WAY overdue! Maybe it is time for a new letter writing, phoning campaign by the people. Maybe the PEOPLE need to generate a NEW campaign issue for the next election. I, for one, have had enough of the RATs and their obstruction and their promotion of Marxist/communist ideology! I have had enough of the stranglehold they've had on the judiciary and enough of their seething hatred thinly veiled by political correctness. I have had enough of their contempt for my faith, for my southern heritage and for my patriotism. I have had enough of their vicious attacks on our president and of their belittling of our troops who fight to keep us safe. I have had enough of their compromising our elections with voter fraud. I have had enough of the media that gives them license and a platform to perpetuate their lies and manipulate the ignorant and I have had enough of their indoctrination of the young to insure the ignorance of future generations. I have had enough of them calling murder a choice and perversion an alternative.
Our liberty was not won by sniveling cowards, but by the courageous resolve of men and women who stood defiantly in the face of their enemies. The time has come where the "noble opposition" has mutated into the "enemy within" and we had better get busy cleaning our own house before we have no house left to clean!

Isn't this actually a racist remark? What would happen if a Republican politician labeled a black and a Hispanic neanderthals? I know one thing. The press wouldn't let him get away with saying that that wasn't what he meant.
Lord knows it pains me to defend Ted Kennedy, but he did not single out the black and hispanic judicial nominees for his total uncalled for term neanderthal.
The person who actually singled out a blacks and hispanics as targets of the term was Limbacher.
If anything, its his spin on the incident thats racist.

So you like calling names Teddy!?
How about THIS name: Mary Jo Kopeckne
How do you like THAT name you LYING, CHEATING, MURDEROUS, DRUNKEN FAT BASTARD ASSHOLE!!!
Why didn't you call these nominees "neanderthal" while you're questioning them on the Judiciary Committee!??

Remember what you said a few years ago about filibustering judicial nominees???
"It is true that some Senators have voiced concerns about these nominations. But that should not prevent a roll call vote which gives every Senator the opportunity to vote 'yes' or 'no'... These delays can only be described as an abdication of the Senates constitutional responsibility to work with the President and ensure the integrity of our federal courts."
~ Sen. Edward Kennedy (D-MA), September 21, 1999.
"We owe it to Americans across the ountry to give these nominees a vote. If our Republican colleagues don't like them, vote against them. But give them a vote."
~ Sen. Edward Kennedy (D-MA), February 3, 1998.

It probably wasn't really racist since you can call whites neaderthals just as easily --- but he sounds like he may be heading into end-stage alcoholism.Anyone know offhand when the last time was someone collapsed and died on the floor of the Senate? I half-expect that to happen to Ol' Teddy. Some "evil" Republican is going to say something that pisses him off, and then he's going to launch into some semi-coherent tirade and cause an aneurysm to burst in his brain, live on C-SPAN.

so, then, there's one set of standards that apply to republicand and conservatives, and another, much looser set of standards that apply to persons of teddy's ilk? because by the standard of the day as it is used against us, "racist" is the nicest accusation you'd be hearing had the equivalent remark come from a republican's mouth.

Fox just played a clip of Lindsey declaring the whole filibuster thing is surely unconstitutional, and pledging to take it to court. The look on his face was one of deep resolve.
I saw that too (post #78).
