More than two years before getting into trouble over a handgun at a Detroit airport, former Richmond Police Chief Jerry Oliver had a similar brush with the law at Richmond International Airport.

According to an airport police report obtained by The Times-Dispatch yesterday, Oliver had his police service pistol confiscated at Richmond International on June 10, 2001, as he went through security to board United Flight 381 to Chicago.

My impression is that he did a good job as Police Chief in Richmond, so if Richmond can get him back now, it might be a good thing for Richmond.

I moved up I-95, though, so I don't know all sides of the Oliver situation.

Let's remember who the enemy is, and it is not good (if imperfect)police officers. Police officers carry guns the way other men wear belts.

Anyone that is that careless with a firearm gives me pause!Having a pistol(loaded)in a carry-on is not like forgetting to take a metal bottle-opener or swiss army knife out of same!!To quote the late,GREAT Ed Norton:"SHEESH"!!!!!!!!

The report continues, "Mr. Oliver also stated that he had done this before and that they had held his weapon for his return." Oliver was not placed under arrest and no charges were filed. The chief left his sidearm and ammunition, and it was picked up the same day by a city police detective, according to the incident report.

Makes sense to me.

At least he showed much better choice, the first time, with the 357SIG. I have one and it's much better than his .25ACP "Pimp Gun".

Random roadblock stop and search police tactics do decrease crime.

Sounds like he may use the same bag for going to the shooting range that he does for his carry on luggage. If so, I can see how he could forget it's in there, or tossed it in as a habit. He might want to invest in another bag for his luggage in the future.

And violate our liberty such as the 4th Amendment was intended to protect. Anybody have that quote from Ben Franklin?

Police chiefs should have rights that the peons don't deserve. I think Saddam and his boys adhered to that philosophy.

"Everyone in law enforcement, as soon as they go to check in, is asked if they have a weapon," he said. "There's nothing unusual at all about people forgetting they packed weapons."

Hmmm.

I wonder if they'll let me off scot-free if I give them the same lame excuse?

Probably not. Common peasants usually don't have the same R.H.I.P. privileges as the reeve of the Shire!

"...he forgot the weapon was in the bag..."

I own several firearms. I can tell you exactly where each one is at any time. I have never "forgotten" where one is.

Hmmmmmmmmmmm... maybe the problem isn't that Oliver is forgetful, but it's simply that I don't have enough firearms!

(Buy more. You'll get to the critical point soon enough!) ;-)

Seriously, a few months back, I was unpacking at a DC hotel on a business trip, and found a magazine in one of my bags. I didn't recognize it as one of my own, and only figured out the next day that it was for a 22 take-down rifle I had bought at a gun show a month earlier. Ooops!

(I had the concierge mail it back.)
