The lefts latest experiment with segregation has certainly started out with a bang. This September, New York City opened the nations first taxpayer-funded school for gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgendered teensHarvey Milk High Schooland a crime wave is already underway.
Last week, police arrested five cross-dressing Harvey Milk students who posed as female hookers and robbed men who approached them for sex. According to news reports, the teens dressed up as female hookers, and when would-be johns approached to solicit sex, other students posing as cops would start arresting the men.
After allegedly taking wallets, cash, ATM and credit cardsand apparently brandishing a gun in at least one casethe students would say something like, Youre not such a bad guy, and release the men. But before the men were set free, several of them divulged their PIN numbers, allowing the Harvey Milk students to withdraw as much as $1200 from each persons account.
Police say that the spree of at least six robberies started on October 5th, and was only halted last week when an officer recognized one of the suspects from a photo taken by a bank surveillance camera.
So far, there has been little discussion in the media about the potential role of Harvey Milk High School. If it had been only one incident, that would be understandable.
But it was a full-fledged crime ringand they werent the first criminal charges brought against the gay schools students.
Last month, three Harvey Milk students were charged with gang assault after a group of teens stabbed a man in the back with a screwdriver in the parking lot of a Starbucks coffee shop across the street from the school. Several of the alleged criminals classmates told the media that the victim had made homophobic remarks, but police told the New York Daily News, This was not motivated by him seeking to harass them about being gay.
The police official also told the Daily News, The Harvey Milk students were the aggressors.
And police officials are holding out the possibility of more arrests to come, saying, The case is absolutely still under investigation.
How ironic that a school that was supposedly established to shelter gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgendered (meaning transsexual or transvestite) teens has become the home of what appears to be a growing crime syndicate.
Its not as if Harvey Milk, named after a slain gay San Francisco politician, is so big that the arrests of eight students in three months can be considered inconsequential. The brand-new school has just 100 pupils. And crime wave cannot be attributed to neglect by New York City; the politically trendy high school has already received $3.2 million for renovations.
New York Citys education department calls the criminal activity two serious, isolated incidents, but eight arrests out of 100 students in less than three months of existence are not numbers to be ignored.
Maybe theres no connection between the gay school and the violent Starbucks attack and the serial robberies. But maybe there is.
Theres obviously nothing inherent to homosexuality that causes or leads to violent crime, but maybe there is something about a homosexual high school that does. Taking scared, confused youthsmany of whom may incorrectly believe they are gay or bisexual, just as many teens who later turn out to be gay or bisexual believe in high school that they are straightand putting them into a segregated environment could be the equivalent of putting a lit match in a tinder box.
Protecting kids who are getting picked onor worseis actually a noble goal. But why resort to the bigots tool of segregation? Why not just teach gay teens how to beat the snot out of bullies? Wouldnt that be better preparation for life in general? Whats a gay man or woman to do, for example, if a thug attacks? Run to a segregated area? Of course not. But self-defense training would seem essential in such a situation.
When news broke this summer that Harvey Milk would become the first public school of its kind, Principal William Salzman said, This school will be a model for the country and possibly the world. If the early results are any indication, lets hope not.
We have an open mind in this nation, but no one is willing to subsidize and promote a mental illness. Let them consume their own, and let our children grow up in peace.
This is why I like the idea of a "separate, but equal" school for them. Removing these fruitcakes from normal public schools can only make the normal public schools better and safer.
If they would like separate employment, separate shopping, separate anything...they should ask! I'll be more than happy to oblige them...
I can't agree with that. I think of it more as "institutionalization".
In the 60's, seperating individuals based on race or religion was a pretty sorry act.
This is a major deviancy and lifestyle choice we're talking about here. One that can be effectively "cured". I have to consider it a good idea to keep this element seperated from the mainstream. Let the innocents live in peace.
