ANAHEIM The gun that killed outlaw Jesse James sold at auction for $350,000.
The .44-caliber Smith & Wesson was purchased Monday by an out-of-state absentee bidder who requested anonymity, said Brian Maize, spokesman for Little John's Antique Arms Inc., which organized the auction.
The gun attracted more than 20 bidders.
Maize said the top bid was a record for a Western history firearm. The previous high was the $240,000 paid in 1998 for a pistol used by outlaw "Blackjack" Ketchum.
Bob Ford, a late recruit to James' gang of bank, train and stagecoach robbers, killed James April 3, 1882, in St. Joseph, Mo. The nickel-finished revolver was made about 1875.

"It was Robert Ford, that dirty little coward,
I wonder how he did feel,
For he ate of Jesse's bread, and he slept in Jesse's bed,
Then he laid poor Jesse in his grave."

Ford shot James in the back of the head and his pistol sells for $350,000. Charles Whitman shot >30 folks from the Clock Tower at the University of Texas and his rifles just sold for less than a $1000. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder I guess. I wouldn't want either one of those weapons.

Little John's has some awesome gun auctions.

Robert Ford was indeed a dirty coward. I wouldn't want the gun.

The "Smith & Wesson" revolver????!!!!!!!
Robert Ford used a .44 caliber Colt SAA "Peacemaker" revolver with a 7 12" barrel to shoot Jesse James and it was not nickel-plated.

There is a story that in the 1960s, a Japanese business man bought the knife used by Hideki Tojo to commit sucide after the war ended. He bought it from a "US Army veteran" in the US and paid $50,000.
He returned to Japan with this "historical artifact" only to discover that had Tojo shot himself.

A hobby I picked up coming to North America is Western History- American style. I pored over a bunch of old Western magazines (no value though) and thought (if not assuming to much) the "rest of the story".
I read that in the rip roaring boom town of Crede, Colorado, the "dirty little coward" made his way. He tried to corner the market on saloons. Pretty near did too. A fire broke out and destroyed the town. Who pops up and quick next two days but the "dirty little coward"- he ran a beer tent- photographs exist.
A fellow just waltzed in and blew him apart with a shotgun. As to the weapon. Hopefully the buyer has authentication. What a piece of history it is- if the original

Robert Ford used a .44 caliber Colt SAA "Peacemaker"Are you sure? There's a hell of a lot of difference between the Colt SAA and the Smith and Wesson 1st Model American or the 3rd Model Russian .44's.
