Pancakes on Wednesdays

We love pancakes, they are our favorite thing.

Welcome to Pancakes on Wednesdays.

Here is an amalgamation of trivial facts and seemingly useless data.

Do not forget to hit the hyperlinks.

We have links, lots of them.

Look it up!

LIPOGRAMMATIST

A writer of lipograms.

As opposed to pangrammatists, who strive to crowd all the letters of the alphabet into a composition of the very briefest scope, a lipogrammatist systematically leaves one of them out. This ditty from the nineteenth century avoids a certain vowel:

A jovial swain may rack his brain,
and tax his fancy’s might,
To quiz in vain, for ’tis most plain,
That what I say is right.

A lipogram without an e is the most difficult kind to write, since that’s the most common letter in English. There have been some celebrated modern examples. In 1939 Ernest Vincent Wright published a 50,000-word novel called Gadsby without a single e in it. The French author Georges Perec produced a 300-page tour-de-force in 1969, similarly without an e in sight, under the title La Disparition. It was translated into e-less English by Gilbert Adair in 1995 as A Void. We might ask ourselves why anyone would attempt such feats, but that question might take us too far into the murkier realms of human psychology.

Such unusual constructions can fatally limit an author, as crucial grammatical forms must not play a part in any composition. Though a good author might find avoiding a particular symbol is not always too much of a handicap, it’s hard to maintain such an approach for long without producing writing that is a thoroughgoing oddity, as this part of my discussion plainly shows. Writing in this way for fifty thousand words would tax anybody’s brain, and could bring about a long-lasting loss of ability in a wordsmith!

The word lipogram is from the Greek lipogrammatos, lacking a letter, which derives from the verb leipein, to leave out, plus gramma, a letter. The first part has nothing to do with the modern prefix lipo-, fat, which is from a different Greek stem.

Happy Birthday

Elizabeth Cady Stanton(1815-1902) is believed to be the driving force behind the 1848 Convention, and for the next fifty years played a leadership role in the women's rights movement.

I didn't stay home and make pancakes.

Charles Manson 1934

I murdered this beautiful woman. Let me out so I can miurder someone else.

The maturing of a pancake is a fascinating thing to behold.

Happy Birthday

Neil Young 1945

As a result of songs, a lot of people assumed that there was a feud between Neil Young and Lynyrd Skynyrd. But the fact is that they were mutual fans!

"I hope Neil Young will remember, Pancakes on Wednesdays.

You've got to turn on evil
When its coming after you

I know I said I love you
I know you know it's true
I've got to put the phone down
And do what we've got to do
One standing in the aisle way
Two more at the door
We've got to get inside there
Before they kill some more

Time is running out
Let's roll

Time is running out
Let's roll

No time for indecision
We've got to make a move
I hope that we're forgiven
For what we've got to do
How this all got started
I'll never understand
I hope someone can fly this thing
And get us back to land

Time is running out
Let's roll

Time is running out
Let's roll

No one has the answers
But one thing is true
You've got to turn on evil
When its coming after you
You've got to face it down
And when it tries to hide
You've got to go in after it
And never be denied

Time is running out
Let's roll

Time is running out
Let's roll

Let's roll for freedom
Let's roll for love
Going after Satan
On the wings of a dove
Let's roll for justice
Let's roll for truth
Let's not let our children
Grow up fearful in their youth

Time is running out
Let's roll

Time has run out
Let's roll

Time is running out
Let's roll

- Neil Young

Would you like some existentialism with your pancakes?   ponder the meaningless nature of the cosmos

WOODY ALLEN:  That's quite a lovely Jackson Pollock, isn't it?

GIRL IN MUSEUM:  Yes it is.

WOODY ALLEN:  What does it say to you?

GIRL IN MUSEUM:  It restates the negativeness of the universe, the hideous lonely emptiness of existence, nothingness, the predicament of man forced to live in a barren, godless eternity, like a tiny flame flickering in an immense void, with nothing but waste, horror, and degradation, forming a useless bleak straightjacket in a black absurd cosmos.

WOODY ALLEN:  What are you doing Saturday night?

GIRL IN MUSEUM:  Committing suicide.

WOODY ALLEN:  What about Friday night?

GIRL IN MUSEUM: [leaves silently]

1966 - Donovan's "Mellow Yellow" was released.

Pancakes are round, and mellow, and they sometimes crossover each other.

1984 - Madonna released the album "Like A Virgin."

I made it through the wilderness
Somehow I made it through
Didn't know how lost I was
Until I found you

I was beat incomplete
I'd been had, I was sad and blue
But you made me feel
Yeah, you made me feel
Shiny and new

Chorus:

Like a virgin
Touched for the very first time
Like a virgin
When your heart beats (after first time, "With your heartbeat")
Next to mine

Gonna give you all my love, boy
My fear is fading fast
Been saving it all for you
'Cause only love can last

You're so fine and you're mine
Make me strong, yeah you make me bold
Oh your love thawed out
Yeah, your love thawed out
What was scared and cold

(chorus)

Oooh, oooh, oooh

You're so fine and you're mine
I'll be yours 'till the end of time
'Cause you made me feel
Yeah, you made me feel
I've nothing to hide

(chorus)

Like a virgin, ooh, ooh
Like a virgin
Feels so good inside
When you hold me, and your heart beats, and you love me

Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh
Ooh, baby
Can't you hear my heart beat
For the very first time?

1859 - The first flying trapeze act was performed by Jules Leotard at Cirque Napoleon in Paris, France. He was also the designer of the garment that is named after him.

2002 - Stan Lee filed a lawsuit against Marvel Entertainment Inc. that claimed the company had cheated him out of millions of dollars in movie profits related to the 2002 movie "Spider-Man." Lee was the creator of Spider-Man, the Incredible Hulk and Daredevil.

Actually, for all you comic book nerds, "Steve Ditko" was the creator of SpiderMan.

I am a friendly neighborhood, super hero, who truly enjoys Pancakes.

We're having our annual sail: Miles from any body of water, a boat rams a shop in Tolnanemedi, Hungary. Blame the tow truck driver, who failed to secure the brakes of the vessel's trailer.

Tonight was my night to have my boys. I had an interesting evening. I decided to pay back Golden Corral for feeding all the veterans Monday night. After we got seated and started to the buffet I saw the manager and went over to talk to him. I told him thank you for what you do every year. His response blew me away. He said that since the word didn't get out to everyone about it being on Monday that they did it again on Tuesday. I was shocked.

A lot of companies have signs out saying "We Support Our Troops." My question to all of them is very simple. How? What do you do? Feed them? Send them things they need and can't get? Take care of their families? Or do you put up a damned sign for your ego. Next time you go in a business with a sign like that ask them what they do. I want to find out what response people get. I started doing that today as I was prowling around town. Mostly the response I got was stunned silence. The other one was one I put in the mouth of the person I was talking to,"we give them moral support."

Now don't get me wrong. Moral support is a great thing. But if you are going to put up a sign then do something. Put your money where your damn sign is or take it down. Support the troops in a way that makes a huge difference. Send them something they need. Call a wife, mother, husband, dad and check on them. Offer to help and then do something. Write to a troop. They love mail from home. Anywhere in these fifty states is home when you are in combat. Those troops left home as kids. They come home as men and women. Do you want their support for your business? Do you want to sell them a burger, car or groceries? You might want to think about that.

I'm done. I'm mad as hell. Way to go Golden Corral. You Rock. You lead by example. You say the two magic words to the other businesses,"FOLLOW ME."

Sorry, out of character for me, but I just felt the need to get that off my chest.

I meant to put an all or put my list in that. I didn't mean to vent everything on you. It's just amazing what the folks at Golden Corral are doing for the troops. The guys that come here for training at Camp Atterbury get their food for half price. They gave one group that was graduating from PLDC..Primary Leadership Development Course a free lunch. Thirty people at a buffet for free. That's a pretty hefty chunk of change. I made it a point to thank the manager for everyone and told him about you posting the ad here. He was excited to hear that. Maybe we have a new FReeper.

There certainly are a lot of people out there like him.

You both have heard about Sears, right? They pick up the difference between military pay and their Sears pay while a Reservist or Guardsman is deployed.

And one of the big steak chains...was it The Outback?...flew steak dinners to Afghanistan. Those are two high profile supporters.

But Hondo, the flip side is also true. It's easy to say I support you. It's a different matter entirely to put those words into action. Maybe we can help change that, in our own corner of the country, in our own way.

"Maybe we can help change that, in our own corner of the country, in our own way."

Yes, I agree.
It's all a grassroots kind of a thing.
What we see in the Canteen is a perfect example of this.

I knew about Sears. I'm not surprised. They are a real, true American success story. I had not heard about Outback. One of the veterans organizations flew steaks out to the troops on a carrier.

I think if we all just ask "what do you do to support the troops?" we can make a difference. If just one more person gets a letter or baby wipes or chewing gum, anything, then we helped. If we all do it everywhere we do business and see one of those signs we can help at least a few more than we do already. What do you guys think. I'm thinking about writing a letter to the editor. We need to rally the people that are wavering in their support. We can do this.

Yes, we can and must.
It's up to us to watch their back while the Stand the Watch.
I really think we also need to educate people that it's not just the combat troops that need support.
Each and every service man and women needs support.
Local business could, like the Golden Corral, "give" certain things to local service people.
I can say that as a business owner myself, my business partner and I, have given discounts to service people since Nov '97

I'm sitting here at work waiting for the red taillights that form a parking lot on the road I take home to move. Here are two pictures of the house across the street from mine. Two days ago, the moose were eating all the bushes. Today there is snow.
