Pancakes on Wednesdays

We love pancakes, they are our favorite thing.

Welcome to Pancakes on Wednesdays.

Wednesday, November 12, 2003

Here is an amalgamation of trivial facts and seemingly useless data.

Do not forget to hit the hyperlinks.

We have links, lots of them.

Look it up!

LIPOGRAMMATIST

A writer of lipograms.

As opposed to pangrammatists, who strive to crowd all the letters of the alphabet into a composition of the very briefest scope, a lipogrammatist systematically leaves one of them out. This ditty from the nineteenth century avoids a certain vowel:

A jovial swain may rack his brain,
and tax his fancy’s might,
To quiz in vain, for ’tis most plain,
That what I say is right.

A lipogram without an e is the most difficult kind to write, since that’s the most common letter in English. There have been some celebrated modern examples. In 1939 Ernest Vincent Wright published a 50,000-word novel called Gadsby without a single e in it. The French author Georges Perec produced a 300-page tour-de-force in 1969, similarly without an e in sight, under the title La Disparition. It was translated into e-less English by Gilbert Adair in 1995 as A Void. We might ask ourselves why anyone would attempt such feats, but that question might take us too far into the murkier realms of human psychology.

Such unusual constructions can fatally limit an author, as crucial grammatical forms must not play a part in any composition. Though a good author might find avoiding a particular symbol is not always too much of a handicap, it’s hard to maintain such an approach for long without producing writing that is a thoroughgoing oddity, as this part of my discussion plainly shows. Writing in this way for fifty thousand words would tax anybody’s brain, and could bring about a long-lasting loss of ability in a wordsmith!

The word lipogram is from the Greek lipogrammatos, lacking a letter, which derives from the verb leipein, to leave out, plus gramma, a letter. The first part has nothing to do with the modern prefix lipo-, fat, which is from a different Greek stem.

Happy Birthday

Elizabeth Cady Stanton 1815

Elizabeth Cady Stanton(1815-1902) is believed to be the driving force behind the 1848 Convention, and for the next fifty years played a leadership role in the women's rights movement.

I didn't stay home and make pancakes.

Happy Birthday

Auguste Rodin 1840

The Sculpture of Auguste Rodin.

What was I going to write in here about pancakes?

1840 - Sculptor Auguste Rodin was born in Paris. His most widely known works are "The Kiss" and "The Thinker."

Kiss my pancakes.

Happy Birthday

Grace Kelly 1929.

Amazing Grace

Let pancakes abound, Grace too!

In the beginning Pancakes are formless and void.

I am an excellent driver!

We are counting carts.

Charles Manson 1934

Sharon Tate, et al

I murdered this beautiful woman. Let me out so I can miurder someone else.

The maturing of a pancake is a fascinating thing to behold.

Happy Birthday

Neil Young 1945

As a result of songs, a lot of people assumed that there was a feud between Neil Young and Lynyrd Skynyrd. But the fact is that they were mutual fans!

"I hope Neil Young will remember, Pancakes on Wednesdays.

You've got to turn on evil
When its coming after you

I know I said I love you
I know you know it's true
I've got to put the phone down
And do what we've got to do
One standing in the aisle way
Two more at the door
We've got to get inside there
Before they kill some more

Time is running out
Let's roll

Time is running out
Let's roll

No time for indecision
We've got to make a move
I hope that we're forgiven
For what we've got to do
How this all got started
I'll never understand
I hope someone can fly this thing
And get us back to land

Time is running out
Let's roll

Time is running out
Let's roll

No one has the answers
But one thing is true
You've got to turn on evil
When its coming after you
You've got to face it down
And when it tries to hide
You've got to go in after it
And never be denied

Time is running out
Let's roll

Time is running out
Let's roll

Let's roll for freedom
Let's roll for love
Going after Satan
On the wings of a dove
Let's roll for justice
Let's roll for truth
Let's not let our children
Grow up fearful in their youth

Time is running out
Let's roll

Time has run out
Let's roll

Time is running out
Let's roll

- Neil Young

Would you like some existentialism with your pancakes?   ponder the meaningless nature of the cosmos

WOODY ALLEN:  That's quite a lovely Jackson Pollock, isn't it?

GIRL IN MUSEUM:  Yes it is.

WOODY ALLEN:  What does it say to you?

GIRL IN MUSEUM:  It restates the negativeness of the universe, the hideous lonely emptiness of existence, nothingness, the predicament of man forced to live in a barren, godless eternity, like a tiny flame flickering in an immense void, with nothing but waste, horror, and degradation, forming a useless bleak straightjacket in a black absurd cosmos.

WOODY ALLEN:  What are you doing Saturday night?

GIRL IN MUSEUM:  Committing suicide.

WOODY ALLEN:  What about Friday night?

GIRL IN MUSEUM: [leaves silently]

"Play It Again, Sam", Paramount Pictures, 1972

Tonya Harding 1970

She ain't perfect.

On this day:

1966 - Donovan's "Mellow Yellow" was released.

Pancakes are round, and mellow, and they sometimes crossover each other.

What is a syllogy?

A All S is P One category is a subset of another
E No S is P The two categories do not intersect
I Some S is P The two categories intersect
O Some S is not P One category is not a subset of another

What is Logic?      ........   Pancakes, it just makes sense.     Amazing Logic.

1984 - Madonna released the album "Like A Virgin."

I made it through the wilderness
Somehow I made it through
Didn't know how lost I was
Until I found you

I was beat incomplete
I'd been had, I was sad and blue
But you made me feel
Yeah, you made me feel
Shiny and new

Chorus:

Like a virgin
Touched for the very first time
Like a virgin
When your heart beats (after first time, "With your heartbeat")
Next to mine

Gonna give you all my love, boy
My fear is fading fast
Been saving it all for you
'Cause only love can last

You're so fine and you're mine
Make me strong, yeah you make me bold
Oh your love thawed out
Yeah, your love thawed out
What was scared and cold

(chorus)

Oooh, oooh, oooh

You're so fine and you're mine
I'll be yours 'till the end of time
'Cause you made me feel
Yeah, you made me feel
I've nothing to hide

(chorus)

Like a virgin, ooh, ooh
Like a virgin
Feels so good inside
When you hold me, and your heart beats, and you love me

Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh
Ooh, baby
Can't you hear my heart beat
For the very first time?

1859 - The first flying trapeze act was performed by Jules Leotard at Cirque Napoleon in Paris, France. He was also the designer of the garment that is named after him.

I am walking on pancake energy.

Pancakes are magical.

Todays Wednesday field trip takes us to the know place!

Pancakes now have a new meaning, for you, and for me.

1942 - During World War II, naval battle of Guadalcanal began between Japanese and American forces. The Americans won a major victory.

"Before Guadalcanal the enemy advanced at his pleasure -- after Guadalcanal he retreated at ours." - Admiral "Bull" Halsey

Let us go forward to certain victory in the traditional night attack of the Imperial Navy.

1979 - U.S. President Carter ordered a halt to all oil imports from Iran in response to 63 Americans being taken hostage at the U.S. embassy in Tehran, Iran on November 4.

Ma name is Jimmy Carter, and I am running for re-election.

1980 - The U.S. space probe Voyager I came within 77,000 miles of Saturn while transmitting data back to Earth.

Vger will come, and the truth will be known about pancakes.

2002 - Stan Lee filed a lawsuit against Marvel Entertainment Inc. that claimed the company had cheated him out of millions of dollars in movie profits related to the 2002 movie "Spider-Man." Lee was the creator of Spider-Man, the Incredible Hulk and Daredevil.

Actually, for all you comic book nerds, "Steve Ditko" was the creator of SpiderMan.

I am a friendly neighborhood, super hero, who truly enjoys Pancakes.

This space was intentionally left blank of hyper links, or anything of substance, because We all need a good laugh about nothing sometimes.

Good afternoon Ms. Kathy! everything's good so far! I wanted to post this yesterday after I heard it on the radio, but it wasn't available until today. I thought it was great!

OF3-11/11/03 8:25AM VETERANS DAY 2003 ISN'T WHAT IT SHOULD BE

The Osgood File. Sponsored in part by DITECH. I'm Charles Osgood on the CBS Radio Network. Here it is Veterans Day and American forces are engaged in important and dangerous action what are we hearing about? Larry Flynt has pictures of a topless Jessica Lynch. He's not going to PUBLISH them or anything. but THAT stupid story is what the media are focusing on because THAT s what we do now. We have made Jessica Lynch the poster girl for the Iraq war because she is a pretty young woman and because she is a survivor and was wounded and a victim. Still IS a victim if you ask me. but not of the Iraqis this time. There are HEROS fighting the Iraqi war but we almost NEVER hear about the fighter-heroes because unlike Sgt. YORK in World War one. or Audie Murphy in World War TWO. that is NOT what we do any more. More after this for DITECH.

There is a page one story in the Wall Street Journal this morning that I commend to your attention. about an Army captain Harry Alexander Hornbuckle, who in his very first combat experience. led a team on a road to Baghdad that came under attack last spring. by 300 Iraqi and Syrian soldiers. there was a grenade and gun battle in which 200 of the enemy fighters were killed. ALL of the Americans got out of there ALIVE. And Captain Zan Hornbuckle was later awarded the bronze star with a V, for VALOR. for what he did that day. Until TODAY his name had never appeared in a newspaper or on television. And as Jonathan Eig, who wrote the Wall Street Journal story points out, Hornbuckle has had no book or movie deals. no trips to Disneyland. When he went home to see his parents in Tifton Georgia, his MOM asked the manager of the local Holiday Inn to put his name on the hotel marquee and that's the MOST public recognition he's received. There's been a cultural shift since Vietnam and it seems we don't celebrate the fighting heroes any more. This is Veterans Day folks. God bless the heroes. The Osgood File. Charles Osgood on the CBS Radio Network.

I don't know if I'll ever get caught up with yesterday's fantastic Veterans' Day thread, especially now that I'm 100s of posts behind on this one, too, so -- to those who got #350, #400, #450, #500, #550, #600, and #650 (and any others I may have missed) in yesterday's Canteen, I send my apologies for my lack of individual attention and congratulations, and this:

A long commute is a great time to listen to books on cassette! (I could never listen to music because I'd zone out. For some reason, I could remain more focused on the driving if I listened to a book or talk radio. ... I couldn't handle the spooky stuff on the drive home at night though. LOL)
