IN FLANDERS FIELDS

IN FLANDERS FIELDS
In Flanders fields, the poppies blow Between the crosses, row on row That mark our place; and in the sky The larks still bravely singing, fly Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the Dead. Short days ago We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow. Loved, and were loved, and now we lie In Flanders fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe; To you from failing hands we throw The torch, be yours to hold it high. If ye break faith with us who die We shall not sleep, though poppies grow In Flanders fields.

Tuesday is Remembrance Day.
The Legionnaires are in the shopping malls with their poppies. Make a small donation. Take a poppy and wear it.
At 1100 on Tuesday, observe a 2 minute silence,
It is not much to ask.

Well good day to you
Private Willie Mc Bride-
Hope ye don't mind
If I set by yer side
An' rest fer a while
In the warm mornin' sun-
I've been walkin' all day
An' I'm nearly done !
Oh, I see by yer gravestone
Ye were only nineteen
When ye joined the Great Fallen
Back in 1916-
Oh, I hope ye died quick-
An' I hope ye died clean
Or Willie Mc Bride
Was it slow an' obscene ?
(Chorus)
Did they beat the drum slowly
Did they play the pipes lowly-
Did the rifles fire o'er ye
As they lowered ye down?
The the bugle play
The Last Waltz and chorus?
Did the pipes play The Flowers
O' the For-or-or-est ?
Can't help but wonder now
Willie Mc Bride:
All those who lie here
Do they know why they died ?
Did they give ye a reason
Did they give ye a cause?
Did ye really believe
That this war would end wars ?
For the sufferin', the cryin',
The glory, the shame;
The killin', the dyin'
It was all done in vain;
For Willie Mc Bride it's all happenin' again-
An' again, an' again'
An' again, and again !

I agree. I have done that and shall do it every year.
Actually, I've done it twice so far this year; as in other years, the little pins keep pulling out of my jacket and I lose Poppies and have to replace them.
Which is fine.
Lest we forget...

Then up spake brave Horatius,
The captain of the gate,
To every man upon this earth,
Death cometh soon or late,
And how can man die better,
Than facing fearful odds,
For the ashes of his fathers,
And the temples of his gods?
from Macauley's Horatius

Thanks Ditto. The photo was in LOOK mag circa 66. My Grand Dad opened it and recognized himself and his mates. He died when I was about 12 and I've always regretted that I was too young to appreciate his stories.
He was in the English army. He and my grandma both lost a brother in the Great War. The death stats for the English totalled one dead for every family. Two poppys for me.
