Oh yea, thanks for the tip. I've got to send Hilton Valentine e-mail as well. By the way, Alan Price left rather early, followed by the rest. I suspect it was Burdon's ego that destroyed the group that had a potential to be as big as those other two British groups, what's their names? In 1963 England (before the US British Invasion in 1964) it was the B's, the RS' and the Animals, and then all the rest!

There's a pretty good Animals bio called "Animal Tracks" by a guy named Sean Egan; it's available through Hilton's site, and also through Amazon and/or Barnes & Noble. I disagree with Egan's evaluation of many of the songs, but disagreeing is part of the fun.

Bobby brings good memories back hey? While everyone was busy tripping on the Beatles (I loved their early stuff) I was busy being a Motown Baby dancing to South Street and Dancing in the Street and falling in love with Smokey -g-

The one Maverick and Goose sing in Top Gun is "You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling".

The Dave Clark 5 had a very black sound ("Bite and Pieces")similar to the RB's in some ways. (Singer was Mike Smith; despite the DC 5 clean-cut image, he was one of the ballsiest Brit singers of the era.) The DC 5s music is very hard to find now - Dave Clark, unlike most rock stars of the time, retained the rights to his own music.

I mean, in those days you knew the names recognized the faces and voices of those three groups. Here we go, from mem'ry: Eric Burdon, vocals, Hilton Valentine, ld gtr, Chas Chandler, bs gtr, Alan Price, kbrds, John Steel, drs. Dave Rowberry replaced Alan Price on keyboards in 1965(?)

(I'm not a jazz a fan, so the instrument abbreviations are probably wrong!)

Did the Righteous brothers sing backup in Paul Simon's graceland album? I think I remember seeing them mentioned int the liner notes.

He died in his sleep

So did Hendrix. I don't think he o'd, but I don't think the coroners going to just sign off on 'he went to sleep.'

No doubt we will hear eventually.

You're absolutely correct, and then there were the rest. (We're talking 1963 England now!)

But Unchained Melody was around much earlier. One of my first albums was by a black fellow named Roy Hamilton who did breathtaking versions of Unchained Melody and Ebb Tide -- both performed years later by Bobby Hatfield of the Righteous Brothers.

Thanks for the information.
I just presumed that the Righteous Brothers had first shot at it because I remember that Phil Spector had a writing credit for the song.

Pretty good - only left out Barry Jenkins, a late replacement for John Steel. Jenkins stayed on with the New Animals. Chas died about 1996, Rowberry last May/June. Also producer Mickie Most died about the same time as Rowberry. Valentine lives in Connecticut now.
