You are correct and in fact that symbol was very frequent on american aircraft prior to Hitler. If you are ever in Washington go see the Spirit of St. Louis in the air and space museum. Look inside the nose cone of the plane and you will see a large swastika painted there.

The guy would have a heart attack if he went into the restaurant there. The waitresses are dressed up like slaves (though some are white and some black) and our waitress there was a black lady with a nametag that said "Muffin."
