[history]
When Bill Clinton captured the Democratic nomination in 1992, he tapped his friend Zell Miller to give a keynote address at the Democratic National Convention. And why not? Mr. Miller was a popular governor of an important state (Georgia) and a Democratic loyalist who encouraged Mr. Clinton to hire a "brilliant team" of consultants named James Carville and Paul Begala. In the speech, Mr. Miller proclaimed: "Bill Clinton is the only candidate for president who feels our pain, shares our hopes and will work his heart out to fulfill our dreams." The speech brought down the house, solidifying Mr. Miller's status as a major Democratic star.

Miller appears to be one of the last sane Democrats.

If the Democrats were smart, they'd replace Little Tommy with Zell.

The recent controveries regarding ole Zell remind me of discussions I had with my grandfather. He was an old school conservative Dem who was proud of Al Gore in his first run (88) for standing up and being pro-life. Oh how things have changed. He never did change parties, but he lost his affinity for the party as he aged and they got more liberal. He died a proud conservative Dem.
If the Clinton/Jackson elite continue to run this party they will further relegate themselves to minority status. Were it not for the gross mishandling of the Watergate problem by the Nixon WH they may already have gone the way of the Whigs.

The only two democrats alive that I would want to dinner, Sen. Zell Miller, (retired) Sen. Paul Simon.
Talk about a short list eh?

Somebody on FreeRepublic said Cain has no chance of winning. Why would he say that?

Somebody on FreeRepublic said Cain has no chance of winning. Why would he say that? Maybe because the other Republican running for the nomination is Johnny Isaakson, who is a current Congressman and has been a 'party regular' for a long time.
I haven't seen too many FReepers who are excited about Isaakson...he represents my district...he's OK, not overly conservative.
Cain will excite people. Let's wait until these guys get in the ring before we write him off...Cain has some prominent national support (i.e. Jack Kemp)...I would say it's not going to be easy , but he definitely has a chance!

Some ex-Dem called into Roger Hedgecock, subbing for L., yesterday, and movingly pleaded for the Dems to return to their principles pre-the left wing takeover of the party.

Senator Zell Miller, though he had a moderately liberal record, wasn't afraid to speak out when he needed to call attention to problems within his party, as when it put partisan politics above the national interest. Miller came as close to a statesman as the Democrats have had since Sen. Pat Moynahan -- who like Sen. Joe Lieberman, however, often lacked the courage to follow through on his judgments. In stark contrast, Sen. Miller deeply embarrassed his party when he held high his mirror. They won't regret his departure from the Senate.

Mr. Miller could not believe that his party would hold up homeland security to please an interest group. Yeah, because it's so unlike them to work against national security interests.
