Apple Computer Inc. said in a statement given to MacCentral on Friday that the company would be fixing security flaws uncovered in Mac OS X Jaguar by Cambridge, MA-based security research firm @Stake earlier this week.
Some have speculated that Apple would not update the older Jaguar operating system since the release of Mac OS X Panther on October 24, 2003, but Apple has put that speculation to rest.
"Apple's policy is to quickly address significant vulnerabilities in past releases of Mac OS X wherever feasible," Apple said in a statement given to MacCentral. "The shipment of Panther does not change this policy. Apple has an excellent track record of working with CERT and the open source community to proactively identify and correct potential vulnerabilities."
Panther, Apple's latest operating system, was not affected by the security issues outlined by @Stake -- the flaws only affect Mac OS X 10.2.8 and lower.
The three advisories are Long argv[] Buffer Overflow; Systemic Insecure File Permissions; and Arbitrary File Overwrite via Core Files. @Stake lists the severity of the advisories as being "high." More information on each of the reported security issues are available in our earlier coverage.

I'm shocked, shocked, shocked! Apple has security flaws?!? Yep, flaws - but no worms or viruses yet.
This announcement is more hype than substance because the things getting patched weren't active in Jaguar anyhow.
How is iTunes working out for you?

I just bought a new Powerbook. The dell system at the same price was not as good:
- 1.0Ghz G4
- 512MB RAM
- 40GB hdd
- DVD-R/CD-RW
- GeForceFX 2go 550
- 12" display
- Cost: $1850
Dell's "answer" to Apple's Powerbook G4
- Pentium M processor, 1.40Ghz
- 14.1" SXGA Displa
- 256MB RAM
- 30GB hdd
- Cost: $1850
One of many reasons I bought a Powerbook. Only a complete ignoramus repeats that mantra that apple is significantly more expensive in this day and age. It's not that apple costs anymore, it's that apple refuses to build very low end systems. They are perfectly happy letting Dell dominate the <$1000 market because anyone who wants real quality will not buy a major brand PC for that price. They'll either build it themselves or get a more specialized shop to do it.
I have a Dell PC, it sucks. I recently ripped it apart and mounted most of its parts in a new case with a Athlon mobo, Athlon XP 2400+ and 256MB of DDR ram. The only off-the-shelf system I own that doesn't suck is the Powerbook I'm using right now. The only good PCs I've used are ones that I or others built themselves.
I can't reseat my Dell PC's mobo because it uses a proprietary power supply. I can't reseat my power supply becuase it's built for Dell's cases. And people talk about Apple being proprietary.......

You got ripped - Dell's site shows this at $1339 with 384 meg Ram
for $1440 you could go to 3 Ghz 512Meg ram Pentium 4 60G HD 15in screen

Some of us have better things to do than reinstall our OS and deal with massive volumes of security holes.
The only cool thing about Microsoft now is .NET. I'd love to see Mono, Portable.NET and Microsoft's .NET rip Sun and Java a new @$$hole.
As I have stated before, I have no problems with PC hardware. I just think the current crop of OS's suck. Here's hoping OpenBeOS changes that.

I have no need for the extra processing power. Unlike most users I go for the platform that gives me the least headaches. I'd still make the same decision that I did. Actually, I might buy the next model up. The base price for my Powerbook was $1600. I added an extra 256MB of RAM and a 802.11g card to it and had to pay VA tax on it, adding $250 to the cost. Still, I'm happy with it. It runs all of my favorite UNIX apps just fine.
Most people will never understand why some of us choose to pay more sometimes for Apple hardware. Of course these are usually the same people who complain about their no-name hardware not working right. You get what you pay for. None of my Macs have ever given me a moment's frustration. All of my PCs except my new one, which I built last night, have. Actually, I should rephrase that. All of my PCs not running BeOS have.

I can, and just bought an Apple and it is terrific! I can afford it because the economy is doing better and so am I. My supplier told me that he is selling several a day, so others must be rich too.

Your comparision was regarding processing power for the same price, so excuse me for not realizing that you don't care about your stated criteria.
... and as far as having no headaches, why have you not just bought a Mac desktop ?

Give it time. Issuing a patch isn't the same thing as patching every Mac box attached to the net.

Until you consider the fact that the Dell box can utilize thousands of industry-standard peripherals that yours can't -- and you simply can't compete with the amount of software available for Windows.

Security patches are a permanent fixture of all OSes. If you think this is the end, remove the freakin' crack pipe, newbie!
