I just bought a new Powerbook. The dell system at the same price was not as good:

Dell's "answer" to Apple's Powerbook G4

One of many reasons I bought a Powerbook. Only a complete ignoramus repeats that mantra that apple is significantly more expensive in this day and age. It's not that apple costs anymore, it's that apple refuses to build very low end systems. They are perfectly happy letting Dell dominate the <$1000 market because anyone who wants real quality will not buy a major brand PC for that price. They'll either build it themselves or get a more specialized shop to do it.

I have a Dell PC, it sucks. I recently ripped it apart and mounted most of its parts in a new case with a Athlon mobo, Athlon XP 2400+ and 256MB of DDR ram. The only off-the-shelf system I own that doesn't suck is the Powerbook I'm using right now. The only good PCs I've used are ones that I or others built themselves.

I can't reseat my Dell PC's mobo because it uses a proprietary power supply. I can't reseat my power supply becuase it's built for Dell's cases. And people talk about Apple being proprietary.......

"Apple buyers are
cool. Apple buyers are hip.
Apple buyers rule.

People who don't buy
Apples never will be loved.
You are your Apple."

Until you consider the fact that the Dell box can utilize thousands of industry-standard peripherals that yours can't -- and you simply can't compete with the amount of software available for Windows.
