Pumpkins on Wednesdays

What is pumpkin soup?

Welcome to Pumpkins on Wednesdays.

Wednesday October 29, 2003

Here is an amalgamation of trivial facts and seemingly useless data.

Do not forget to hit the hyperlinks.

We have links, lots of them.

Look it up!

GONGOOZLER

An idle spectator.

This is one of the odder words in the English lexicon and not only because of its strange appearance. It suddenly started to become popular in Britain from about 1970 onwards, but with very little previous recorded history attached to it. It is closely linked with canal life, and even now it seems to be a word especially favoured by those who like to mess about on narrow waterways. It is said to have been a bit of canal workers’ slang, originally for a person who stood on the towpath idly watching activity. You might expect that it would date from the heyday of the canals in the early part of the nineteenth century, but it is actually only recorded from the end of that century or the early twentieth. It was given wider public notice by the late L T C Rolt, who used it in his book about canal life, Narrow Boat, in 1944. It is said to derive from a couple of words in Lincolnshire dialect: gawn and gooze, both meaning to stare or gape. However, nobody seems too clear about this.

Happy Birthday

Kate Jackson 1948

Charlie says, love my good and pancakes.

Kate Jackson appeared on issues #193 and #251.

What's up Chuck?

Uhhh, sorry charlie, The Canteen likes Pancakes with good taste.

Happy Birthday

Winona Ryder 1971

Pancakes on Wednesdays, hmmm, I could use a line like that!

I don't steal anymore since I got caught.

Would you like to play a game?

Happy Birthday

Denis Potvin 1953

We are counting cards

A member of the New York Islanders for 15 seasons, Denis holds all career scoring records for Isles’ defensemen (goals, assists and points). He is a three-time winner of the Norris Trophy, captained four Stanley Cup-winning teams and was the first team member to have his number retired (#5).

Happy Birthday

1948  Ihaff Tapoop

Todays Wednesday field trip takes us to the pumpkin patch

ABOUT A HUNDRED DOLLARS

I used to work in a pet store. I was in charge of setting prices for goldfish. It was really cool making things up like that.

The Yankees fall.

You knew the Yankees were finished.

And Beckett, indeed, went out and pitched one of the most resolute closeouts in series history.

The Yankees looked as feeble as the many teams they have enfeebled in their history of baseball supremacy.

You win 'em and you lose 'em and life goes on.

So a 23-year-old kid who had never thrown a big-league complete game took on El Supremo of the Bronx and he showed no fear.

The Boss is dead — for now, anyway. It is enough to make the OFF love baseball again.

Loser! Guess which MLB baseball team has lost more World Series than any other in history!

On this day:

1967 - The musical "Hair" opened off Broadway.

Look at all of these beautiful pumpkins.

Wheel of Fortune.

1977 - "Bat Out Of Hell" was released by Meat Loaf.

I remember every little thing, as if it happened only yesterday

Ain't no doubt about it, we were doubly blessed

Will you love me forever?

Holy Cow, I think he is going to make it.

Remember!.

Hey Hondo1952, I hope that you like pancakes.

1652 - The Massachusetts Bay Colony proclaimed itself to be an independent commonwealth.

The original seal of the Massachusetts Bay Colony here, the Puritans, intrepid explorers themselves, tell the story of their "discovery," not of the North Pole, but of a "New England."

Welcome to massachusetts, the home of pancake eaters like Ted Kennedy.

Would you like some pancakes with your pumpkins?

1929 - America's Great Depression began with the crash of the Wall Street stock market.

I am an excellent stock price driver.

Pumpkins rule, on this day.

Perfrcte definetley.

1960 - Muhammad Ali (Cassius Clay) won his first professional fight.

Who is on first?

The Greatest.

ALI.

Clay comes out to meet Liston
And Liston starts to retreat
If Liston goes back any further
He'll end up in a ringside seat.
Clay swings with a left,
Clay swings with a right,
Look at young Cassius
Carry the fight.
Liston keeps backing
But there's not enough room
It's a matter of time.
There, Clay lowers the boom.
Now Clay swings with a right,
What a beautiful swing,
And the punch raises the bear,
Clear out of the ring.
Liston is still rising
And the ref wears a frown,
For he can't start counting,
Till Sonny comes down.
Now Liston disappears from view.
The crowd is getting frantic,
But our radar stations have picked him up.
He's somewhere over the Atlantic.
Who would have thought
When they came to the fight
That they'd witness the launching
Of a human satellite?
Yes, the crowd did not dream
When they laid down their money
That they would see
A total eclipse of the Sonny!
I am the greatest!

Cassius Clay before the first Liston-bout

Enjoy it all, and thank you TRoops, and FReepers.

The word Geometry comes from Geometria (Greek , "earth" + metreien, "to measure"). For most of us geometry is like alchemy: mysterious, incomprehensible and sometimes boring. But geometry isn't a mysterious or abstruse science, it's a tool like any other, just like a hammer or a screwdriver. By means of geometry and a lever, Archimedes wished to lift the Earth. More reasonably, Eratosthenes made a surprisingly accurate measurement of the circumference of the Earth, using simple geometric formulas and a stick! This site intends to show that geometry can also be fun because it's visual creativity. Accordingly, we have endeavoured to make an "intuitive" puzzle site with fewer formulas and more visuals, which may encourage students learning this science or just constitute a platform for reflection.

That sounds like good deal for Peter.

Peter, Peter, pumpkin eater,
Had a wife and couldn't keep her;
He put her in a pumpkin shell
And there he keep her very well.

Peter, Peter, pumpkin eater,
Had another, and didn't love her;
Peter learned to read and spell,
And then he loved her very well
.

1973 - O.J. Simpson, of the Buffalo Bills, set two NFL records. He carried the ball 39 times and he ran 157 yards putting him over 1,000 yards at the seventh game of the season.

I had an excellent driver.

I used to carry a pumpkin for a living, but now I just like to slice them.

1998 - The oldest known copy of Archimedes' work sold for $2 million at a New York auction.

About a hundred dollars

"Give me a lever long enough and a place to stand, and I will move the world."
-Archimedes, 230 BC

I found Pancakes on Wednesdays

Can you find the pumpkin Pi?

Algebraists do it in groups. Pi is an irrational number that can be computed to thousands of decimals. A Pumpkin is just a Pumpkin. It is true that August Mobius was a difficult and opinionated man. But he was not so rigid that he could only see one side to every question.
e is named after a person, but pi stands for itself. 2000 pounds of Chinese soup: Won ton 1 millionth of a mouthwash: 1 microscope

Who, or what is Pawl?

NOUN:

A hinged or pivoted device adapted to fit into a notch of a ratchet wheel to impart forward motion or prevent backward motion.

ETYMOLOGY:

Probably from Dutch pal, from Latin plus, stake. See pag- in Appendix I.

Paul was the greatest at humility. He changed the World because he told the truth in all of his endeavours.

Pumpkin Pie.

1 unbaked 9" pie shell
3/4 lb. firm tofu
1 (16 oz.) can pumpkin puree
or
2 cups fresh-cooked pumpkin
1 cup Sucanat or brown sugar
2 Tbsp. oil
2 Tbsp. molasses
1 1/2 tsp. cinnamon
1 tsp. salt
3/4 tsp. ginger powder
1/2 tsp. nutmeg

Blend all ingredients in a food processor until very well mixed. Pour into the pie shell and bake for 1 hour in a preheated, 350-degree oven for 1 hour, or until cracks start to appear in the filling. Chill for at least 2-3 hours before serving. Serve with Whipped Tofu Topping for a decadent finish.

For best results, use fresh pumpkin - it will vastly improve the flavor and make the texture more

Eat it up.

Great music MoJo. I had to take a health break, I'm back for a while now.

This is the greatest book I have ever read. I highly recommend it to all FReepers. I had the opportunity to meet the author, photographer and three of the men featured. One of whom I had previously served with. This is an excerpt:

" When asked what his thoughts are today upon seeing the American flag, his voice softens and he recounts the story of a fellow prisoner of war by the name of Mike Christian. Mike was a quiet, solitary man who was fiercely loyal to causes in which he believed. Old Glory was one of those causes and Mike was intent on making sure the prison camp had a flag. An American Flag.

The North Vietnamese of course had severe consequences for any prisoner caught with an American flag. The beatings were barbaric. Yet Mike persisted. Time and time again he would be punished. And time and again he would begin anew, fashioning his flag.

Mike would scavenge grungy tattered scraps of cloth and then, from the rubble of bricks, he would grind the bits and pieces into a crimson powder that he used to stain the flag's seven red stripes. By smashing wet rice, he was able to formulate a type of glue that he used to paste the elements together. Stars were made of uniform buttons and Saint Christopher medals that he hung in a field of blue.

To witness what this man would go through as a prisoner of war was an amazing inspiration to Major Thorsness, who says he can still see his comrade huddled in the dark under his mosquito netting with a needle made from a bamboo splinter.

He would sit for hours in the thick, choking heat of this foreign purgatory and thread together an American flag. Beneath his bashed and bruised flesh was a spirit that refused to be tortured.

"When I see a flag flying I think of Mike Christian," says Thorsness. "He did it to keep his hopes up, and in the process he lifted everyone's beyond measure."

Major Leo K. Thorsness was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor for his actions which led to his capture.

God Bless American and Those That Protect Her. This book is about the living Medal of Honor Receipients. I feel very honored to call two of them friends.

This was printed WITHOUT the permission of the author. Please go buy the book. Proceeds from the sale will go to The Congressional Medal of Honor Society.

I would like to post something from the book each day. Do you think it would be alright?

I'd really like to help these guys out. They are the most humble people I have ever met. I was just able to recover my book from my home tonight. One of my boys snuck it out in his backpack for me. It is very inspirational and I love to read and reread it. I was lucky to get three MOH recipients to sign their page as well as the author and photographer. I also got a copy of it for my Mom and it was signed in memory of my Dad who did three tours as a helicopter pilot, and one for my uncle whose brother received the Silver Star.
