Peter Lewis found Karl Rove's strategy for getting President George W. Bush re-elected so compelling that the billionaire businessman decided to donate $10 million -- to try to defeat Bush.
Lewis, chairman of auto insurer Progressive Corp., read in the May 12 New Yorker magazine that Rove, Bush's top political adviser, planned to pursue such traditional Democrats as Jewish voters and non-white businessmen and to limit trial lawyers' clout as donors to the party, among other tactics.
Lewis, 69, who owns $1.4 billion of Progressive's shares, and financier George Soros pledged $10 million each to a new political organization, America Coming Together. The group's aim: mobilize people to vote against the president by raising $75 million -- more money than any political committee has assembled for a campaign, aside from the Democratic and Republican national organizations themselves.

What do you expect when your insurance company is named "progressive"?

You know I get their ads in the mail all the time. The rates always look pretty good, but whenever I see the word "Progressive", I automatically grab my wallet and hide.

I'll have to check. I'm pretty sure ours is through Prodential. Because we use a broker, I'll check to make sure it's still the same, just in case!

The great thing about campaign finance reform was that it leveled the playing field so that rich people couldn't spend millions of dollars to influence politics their way...right, Mr. Kerry?

I swore off Progressive when I found out it, along with University of Phoenix, joined George $oro$' deceptive movement to legalize marijuana. That was even before the commercial with the vengeful girlfriend pinching off her cheating boyfriend's scrotum via a voodoo website (the new version has the BF's head shrinking at the end).
I was delighted when their multi-million dollar Super Bowl ads featuring E.T. flopped like a giraffe on ice skates.

Cool. Now I have something to write on their weekly junk mail solicitations.
Be sure to send all your unaddressed junk mail back to them in their "postage paid" envelopes along with a note telling them all where to stuick it.

Do you think that insurance companies nail their customers to the wall? Where did Lewis get his spare change? If I was a Progressive customer, I would be changing my insurance immediately.

Glad I'm not a Progressive stockholder nor a client of the company.

And now we know that the name "progressive" was picked because of it's liberal/socialist connotations.

Went on progressives website and wrote a kind note to the investor relations person. I would suggest that all do the same.

If their aim is to get people to vote against the president, are they not going to back someone else? Inquiring minds want to know whom.

Things that make you go hmmm. The largest cost in insurance is claims and the legal costs for defense is huge. Why would a major insurance stockholder and office want to take a stand that increases costs ? Does he benefit somehow when the insurance company incurs large settlement costs or is there something more to this legislation ?

My Fellow NEOhio and NWPa FReepers,
You remember what this POS tried to do last year in "decriminalizing" the first drug offense. Sentence him/her to counseling provided by "my" company.
Do you buy your insurance from Progressive?
Do you really want to subsidize this guy?
