The Origin of Zot found

Posted on 10/25/2003 9:45:35 PM PDT by Malsua

I was a CIS Wizop in the mid 90s after being a BBS user and boardop in the 80s...but one thing I've done as I upgraded my hard disks was to keep the entire contents of my old drives on the latest and greatest drive purchased.

This particular image was dated on my drive as from 10-17-1995. I don't have any clue as to where it came from but it's just as relevent today, heh.

Worth a chuckle anyway :)

That strip is from Kevin and Kell, one of the very first webcomics and still coming out daily. Bill Holbrook tends a bit green, but K&K is great - a world of intelligent animals who haven't forgotten that they're animals (i.e., folks get eaten). Highly recommended.

I have to ask... you went public a few days ago, right? So who's the cool AM, who's Thor, and who's Tim? ;)

I really have no clue as to why it's sitting on my computer other than it was very relevent to my position at the time. I was looking thru old pictures trying to find a particular one and stumbled across it. Now as to looking at the current strip, it's a good strip and funny. I have no idea if that image is still available but it's definately worth a look. The author certainly isn't a computer newb and gets 'REAL' computer issues. ALA Dilbert without the hyperbole.

Actually, as far as comics go, the "BC" comic strip (by Johnny Hart) was using "Zot" as the sound effect for lightning bolts *long* before 1995. I've got a ton of his book collections in the other room, when I have a few minutes I'll go look up and scan a couple of examples.

Every K&K strip is archived on-site, back to September 1995. And I agree, Bill Holbrook knows computers. (AND computer users!)

Well, there we have it...Zot really goes way back.

As to the title of the thread, I was being somewhat facetious in it. I simply found something that I knew dated to oct 95 and posted...I don't hold that I was correct and indeed you and others have shown I'm wrong by decades. No worries mate, that's cool. I found an image, figured to spark a thread and now we're at it! Heh.

Yes, I actually saw the movie when it was released.... on a Saturday afternoon at the theater, long, long ago! Funny how some things stay with you. I also remember that there were three different effects as long as Tom had the ancient coin in his possession:

1. If Tom said "zotz", everything around him went into slow motion,
2. If Tom pointed his finger, it induced a sharp pain (I remember in the class he was teaching that whenever students raised their hands and Tom pointed to them, they grabbed their stomachs in pain), and,
3. If Tom pointed his finger and said "zotz" at the same time, it was a killer.

When he experimented on a fly circling his lamp, he pointed at the fly, the fly dropped, and then got back up and took to the air, circling the lamp again. When Tom said "zotz", the fly was suddenly in slow motion. And when Tom pointed at the fly and said "zotz", the fly dropped for good, dead.

I remember absolutely nothing else about the movie. Yeah, it's funny how some things stick with you for, what?, 40 years.

Sheesh, now I'm thinking I'll check Amazon for the movie.

Regards,
LH

Hey, you should keep a running tab on the number of trolls Zotted - and post that number on the sidebar to keep us informed. Many of us revel in watching the trolls fry.

Well, after seeing all the attention this thread is getting, I'm a bit hesitant to post. Yes, I also first encountered ZOT as the sound of the lightning in Johnny Hart's "BC" comic strip, in 1961. Later, I adopted it as my name (as a lawful-good magic-user) in the board game, Dungeons and Dragons. Please note that my screen name doesn't have a capital Z.

Wow, thanks, I saw that movie a LONG long time ago, too, when I was a kid, and I still remember a few parts of it. Let me know if you find it!
