Here is another action alert this time for some good legislation. If you aren't a member of numbers USA yet please go to Numbers USA and join (it's free). Once you join you can send free faxes via the numbers USA website. Email snip:

The House of Representatives is expected to vote on a bill to extend and expand a workplace verification pilot program to deter illegal immigration on Tuesday, October 28th. Your urgent action is needed by then.

1. CALL YOUR REPRESENTATIVE ASAP

If you only take one immigration-reduction action during the next week, please call your Representative and ask him\her to vote YES on H.R. 2359.

H.R. 2359, the Basic Pilot Extension Act of 2003, would extend for five years the workplace employment eligibility authorization pilot programs created in 1996. It was passed by the House Judiciary Committee by a vote of 18 to 8 last month. It also would expand the pilot programs from the original five states to all 50 states. Thus, all employers in the United States would have the option of participating, although the program would remain voluntary.

This program is an important component of preventing illegal aliens from taking jobs from those who have the legal right to work in this country.

Under workplace verification pilot programs, employers in five of the states with the largest populations of illegal aliens can choose to participate in a worksite verification program.

When employers who chose to participate fill out I-9 forms for new employees, they then enter either the Social Security number or Alien Identification number into the automated system.

The Social Security Administration or the (now) Bureau of Citizenship and Immigration Services verifies that the particular number entered is valid and was issued to a person of the same name as the employee. Once the employer receives verification that the number is authentic, he or she is no longer liable for employer sanctions, should the employee turn out to be an illegal alien.

Rep. Hostettler (R-IN), chairman of the immigration subcommittee, boldly pushed the amendment to H.R. 3259 to expand the workplace verification program nationwide. This was thought to be quite controversial for a Republican leader because the business community generally opposes measures that would prevent them from hiring illegal aliens. But Hostettler was armed with testimonials of businesses in the pilot states that the verification program is pro-business because it takes away the headache of trying to guess whose ID cards are fraudulent, etc. This matches our NumbersUSA general belief that the majority of business owners in America are patriotic, community-loving citizens who don't want to hire illegal aliens and also who don't want their competitors to hire them.

WHY THIS VOTE IS SO IMPORTANT

H.R. 2359 is scheduled to be voted on by the full House of Representatives on Tuesday, October 28th.

Because it is scheduled to be brought up on the suspension calendar, no amendments may be offered to the bill and the bill needs a two-thirds majority in order to pass.

The House leadership is still cautious about bringing immigration bills to the floor, and we know they will be watching this vote. It will be a tough vote, but it is important that we have a good showing. The more support for H.R. 2359 we can show, the more likely the House leadership will be to move forward other immigration-reduction legislation.

If an extension doesn't get signed by the President, even the current pilot programs will be shut down by Christmas.

YEAH baby, Aint Socialism GRAND! What a gaggle of sick twisted UnAmerican parasites tring to buy votes. And that is just the SOBs in the Senate on OUR side of the Isle. Face it folks the Congress if full of Jim Jeffords clones.

I never thought I would see the day such nonsense would be pushed by "Conservatives". Unfreaking believable.

Appears it is up to the leadership (those listed) whether it goes up for a vote or gets attached to an appropriations bill.

The Leadership list is crawling with Rinos and Dims. I only count 3 at best that would come on side of the American People (as opposed to the Illegal Aliens). The rest are One World Socialists.

If this Nightmare Act passes Remember It come next November. Nothing is going to change on this front until politicians start losing their jobs. It's that simple.

Bump That. It's important to phone the offices of every politician connected with this madness and let them know that a voting for this bill will cost them votes.

Hey! But console yourself with the fact that we got 300 illegal West European janitors busted in a real kick-ass major sting across the nation's Wal-Mart stores ...............

Yeah and by the accounts I've read it only took them 5 years of investigation to nail these people.

I'll call my Senators tomorrow, gee I'm steamed. I also just went over to www.nrsc.org and filled out a feedback form to tell them what I thought of this legistlation.

I also told them I'll probably just elect to contibute directly to those running who are both endorsed by the Club for Growth and for Securing our Borders (let alone putting further enticements before them to come here).

That's the Committee raising all the $$$, hit them where it hurts.

Absolutely correct. Looks like I've got to send ANOTHER complaint letter to John Edwards tomorrow. Fortunately, he's finished in this state after the election.

Someone breaks into the coutry illegally,

In state tuition rates are a bad idea, but the part about people who were brought here as infants and never even knew they were here illegally until they graduate highschool are the exception to the deport-them-all round up I'm normally behind. THese people didn't break in, they were dragged in. Deport the parents.

From my email from FAIR:

The “DREAM Act”: Hatch-ing Expensive New Amnesty for Illegal Aliens While Hatch-eting the Middle Class
(October 23, 2003 – Washington, DC) Senator Orrin Hatch’s DREAM Act is a massive illegal alien amnesty program disguised as an educational initiative, charges the Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR). The Development Relief and Education for Alien Minors Act of 2003 (S. 1545), known as the DREAM Act, is set for mark-up in the Senate on Thursday. It will place American citizens in direct competition with illegal aliens for scarce slots in freshmen classes at state colleges and universities while awarding the illegal alien students with an amnesty.
The bill will grant residency to an unlimited number of illegal aliens who have completed high school in the U.S. and will require states to make illegal aliens eligible for subsidized in-state tuition. “This bill is a crass political calculation aimed at selling an amnesty disguised as an educational initiative,” charged Dan Stein, FAIR’s Executive Director. Stein noted that Democrats have already publicly stated that the DREAM act is just the beginning of a larger amnesty bidding war, and the bill will be used as a vehicle to extend amnesty to millions of illegal aliens.

Stein noted that since the number of slots at universities is fixed and tuition dollars are short, that for every illegal alien admitted an American student, or legal resident was being turned away. “This massive give-away of higher education to illegal aliens comes at a time when every state university system is raising tuition and cutting education benefits,” Stein continued.

This week, the state of Maryland announced that tuition in its university system could go up as much as 40 percent, putting a college education out of the reach of many middle class families. “Orrin Hatch now wants to force the children of U.S. citizens to compete for admission and shrinking tuition assistance programs with people who are in the country illegally. He and his colleagues are literally taking opportunities and tuition assistance away from the children of citizens and giving them to illegal aliens,” Stein charged.

The DREAM Act will also repeal the requirement that state benefits made available to illegal aliens also be offered to citizens who reside in other states. “Supporters of this bill are unabashedly placing the interests of illegal aliens above American families who have paid taxes and played by the rules,” charged Stein. That provision would also mean that any foreign student contemplating pursuing a high education in the United States would be far better off breaking our laws by coming here illegally than waiting until they reach college and applying to come as a foreign student.

Although the DREAM Act is touted as a bill to provide educational opportunities for a small number of highly motivated students, a “cancellation of removal” provision would grant legal status to an unlimited number of illegal aliens who entered the U.S. as minors, even if they are not pursuing a higher education, or have even completed highschool.

“At a time when most middle class families in this country are concerned about whether they are going to be able to provide a college education for their own kids, Senator Hatch comes along with a bill that will require them to subsidize a college education for an untold number of illegal aliens,” stated Dan Stein, executive director of FAIR.

The only ones that will give this airplay are Joe or Jessie and WND! Or maybe we could push for press and use Walmart?

Why did I bother following the US' immigration laws???

I could've just crossed the border at Arizona, and I would've avoided all the hassle... (/groan)

Outrageous, and discouraging for those with a conscience who followed the laws of the country that invited them to live and work and be future Americans.
