NEW YORK (October 23, 4:35 a.m. ADT) - Don't tell Jan Michelini that lightning doesn't strike twice. Michelini, an assistant director on Mel Gibson's "The Passion of Christ," was nicknamed "Lightning Boy" after lightning struck his umbrella during filming on a hilltop in the town of Matera, Italy, reported VLife, a supplement to Variety publications, in its October issue. He suffered light burns on the tips of his fingers.

"I'm about a hundred feet away from them," producer Steve McEveety was quoted as saying, "when I glance over and see lightning coming out of Caviezel's ears. Both Caviezel and Michelini got struck this time. The main bolt hit Caviezel and one of its forks hit Michelini's umbrella." Luckily, they weren't hurt. Caviezel stars as Christ and Monica Bellucci is Mary Magdalene in the film. Interesting

The burning question, "Is this a sign of approval or a sign of His disapproval of this film????"

Wow, how could "Lightning be coming out of this guys ears", yet he didnt get hurt?
Interesting indeed.

I think after the first strike, I would be looking pretty hard for an umbrella without metal in it.
To: joobers
Coincidence? Twice for emphasis?

My Grandfather was hit by lightning 3 times before he died (no he didn't die from lightning)but it was funny because whenever it would go to looking like rough weather was on the way, he would haul @ss to the house and wouldn't say a thing to anybody. They say that once you've been struck the odds of getting hit again go up dramatically. If I was on this set, I wouldn't ever stand next to this guy.

I agree, get rid of the lightning rod.

Stand on a hilltop in a thunderstorm holding an umbrella with a metal tip and get struck by lightning? Gezz, what are the odds?

The burning question, "Is this a sign of approval or a sign of His disapproval of this film????" They're both still alive. What does that tell you?

I'm just asking the question. It appears that you can also state that that perhaps God is trying to get his attention. That would certainly get mine. I also agree with you in the fact that God could have struck him dead on the spot. This is why I am asking the question. Any other opinions out there?
To: joobers
lightning struck his umbrella during filming I would call up the re-write department, and tell them to work this into the film.
Although I'm not sure they had metal umbrellas back then....

Any other opinions out there? Maybe the electrical charge difference between the clouds and the ground was high enough to ionize the atmosphere and start a lightning strike, and maybe the fact that this guy had a METAL umbrella raised on TOP of a HILL made his umbrella the focal point for the electricity.

If he plays golf, I suggest he use a 1-iron.
Even God can't hit a 1-iron.

Yes, those are physical science facts.
I spent and hour on a hike in Yosemite Natl Park this last summer in a major lightening storm. I must have convinced at least 20 people on the trail that an umbella is a personal lightening rod.
Most decided that getting wet wasn't such a bad thing after all.

Have go to work. Have a great day!

Don't tell Jan Michelini that lightning doesn't strike twice. Oh, don't be silly - I'd be telling him he's safe as houses, that the likelihood of it ever happening again is astronomical, that he's just fine with that umbrella in a thunderstorm...while I was backing away...rapidly...very rapidly...
