Pancakes on Wednesdays
I shall call them mini Pancakes!

Welcome to Pancakes on Wednesdays.

Wednesday October 22, 2003

Here is an amalgamation of trivial facts and seemingly useless data.

Do not forget to hit the hyperlinks.

We have links, lots of them.

Look it up!

WELKIN
The sky; heaven; the firmament

We don’t use this much nowadays—dictionaries usually tag it as archaic or literary—except in the set phrase make the welkin ring, meaning to make a very loud sound. What supposedly rings in this situation is the vault of heaven, the bowl of the sky. In older cosmology this was thought to be one of a set of real crystal spheres that enclosed the Earth, to which the planets and stars were attached, so it would have been capable of ringing like a bell if you made enough noise. The word comes from the Old English wolcen, a cloud, related to the Dutch wolk and German Wolke. Very early on, for example in the epic poem Beowulf of about the eighth century AD, the phrase under wolcen meant under the sky or under heaven (the bard used the plural, wolcnum, but it’s the same word). Ever since, it has had a strong literary or poetic connection. It appears often in Shakespeare and also in Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales: “This day in mirth and revel to dispend, / Till on the welkin shone the starres bright”. In 1739, a book with the title Hymns and Sacred Poems introduced one for Christmas written by Charles Wesley that began: “Hark! how all the welkin rings, / Glory to the King of kings”. If that seems a little familiar, it is because 15 years later it reappeared as “Hark! the herald-angels sing / Glory to the new born king”.

Happy Birthday

Sarah Bernhardt 1844

Life begets life. Energy becomes energy. It is by spending oneself that one becomes rich.

Your words are my food, your breath my wine. You are everything to me.

We are counting cards!

Happy Birthday

Jimmie Foxx 1907

We are counting cards.

Lets stamp out Burkas for good.

We are counting the players from the city of Brotherly Love, Philadelphia!

A fair and balanced player.

Jimmy, oh Jimmy Foxx when are you coming back?

Astounding fact # 564,891...
Maine is the toothpick capital of the world.

246 toothpics, definitely.

Would you like some beer in your pancakes?

Happy Birthday

Timothy Leary 1920

He is dead, Tim.

Dude, my burkas are turning into pancakes.

Happy Birthday

Christopher Lloyd 1938

With the flux capacitor we can go back and eat the same pancakes over and over again.

I am an excellent driver.

Where we are going, we don't need roads, just Pancakes.

Khanom Buang

Crispy Pancakes with Fillings. Thai crispy pancakes which look very much like Mexican tacos. Coconut cream is topped on the small pancakes before fillings are placed on it. The two different fillings from which one can choose are the sweet filling: containing shredded coconut and golden threads (egg yolk strips) and the salty filling: shredded coconut and chopped spring onions.

The Pancakes are selling like hot cakes. Hey, they are hot cakes.

Happy Birthday

Annette Funicello 1942

Pancake Party Bingo!

"All happiness depends on a leisurely breakfast."
                         -John Gunther

Would you like some subatomic particles with your pancakes?

Happy Birthday

Leslie West (Mountain) 1945

Mississippi Queen, you know what I mean.

We eat mountains of pancakes.

I am older now, but the Pancakes are always good for me.

I am feeling so tens today.

Happy Birthday

Jeff Goldblum 1952

We are Fighting Fire.

Man do those alien burkas stink bad.

Todays Wednesday field trip takes us to the America's Stonehenge

On this day:

1961 - Chubby Checker appeared on the "Ed Sullivan Show" and performed "The Twist."

We have a really big Pancake Shooow today!

1966 - The Beach Boys released the single "Good Vibrations."

Pancakes give me good vibrations.

Ah! I love the colorful clothes she wears
And the way the sunlight plays upon her hair

Ah! I hear the sound of a gentle word
On the wind that lifts her perfume through the air

I'm pickin' up good vibrations
She's givin' me the excitations
I'm pickin' up good vibrations
(Ooo, bop-bop, good vibrations)
She's givin' me the excitations
(Bop-bop, excitations)
(Good, good, good, good vibrations)
I'm pickin' up good vibrations
(Ooo, bop-bop, good vibrations)
She's givin' me the excitation
(Bop-bop, excitations)
(Good, good, good, good vibrations)
I'm pickin' up good vibrations
(Ooo, bop-bop, good vibrations)
She's givin' me the excitations
(Bop-bop, excitations)

Close my eyes; she's somehow closer now
Softly smile I know she must be kind
When -- I look in her eyes
She goes with me to a blossom world

I'm pickin' up good vibrations
She's givin' me the excitations
I'm pickin' up good vibrations
(Ooo, bop-bop, good vibrations)
She's givin' me the excitations
(Bop-bop, excitations)

I don't know where, but she sends me there
(Oh, my my love sensation)
(Oh, my my heart elation)

Gotta keep those lovin' good vibrations a-happenin' with her x3

Ohh!

(Good, good, good, good vibrations)
I'm pickin' up good vibrations
(Ooo, bop-bop, good vibrations)
She's givin' me the excitation
(Bop-bop, excitations)
(Good, good, good, good vibrations)
I'm pickin' up good vibrations
(Ooo, bop-bop, good vibrations)

Na na-na na-na na-na-na

Na na-na na-na na-na-na

Na na-na na-na na-na-na

Na na-na na-na na-na-na

Wednesdays have always seemed like pancake days to me. Whether they were cooked at home on my mom's old Sunbeam electric griddle or at the local pancake house, it just seems to be the right kind of food for a Wednesday. A tall steaming stack of buttermilk cakes with heated syrup dripping down the sides make a sweet ending to a busy week.

1954 - The Federal Republic of Germany was invited to join the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).

We are big, we are bad, and we beat the big bad bears.

1999 - China ended its first-ever human rights conference in which it defied Western definitions of civil liberties.

Whats Down?

1746 - The College of New Jersey was officially chartered. It later became known as Princeton University.

The Princeton Tigers love Pancakes.

1836 - Sam Houston was inaugurated as the first constitutionally elected president of the Republic of Texas.

Don't mess with Texas!

I was the President of Texas, and I love pancakes.

We must never forget 9-11

Outdoor Pancakes rule!

Pancakes on Wednesdays.

Pancakes.

Wednesday.

1962 -  President Kennedy went on radio and television to inform his nation about his order to send U.S. forces to blockade Cuba. The blockade was in response to the discovery of Soviet missile bases on the island.

Hey Luis the Banana Republican. You crack me up sometimes. Keep it up!

1968 - Apollo 7 splashed down in the Atlantic Ocean. The spacecraft had orbited the Earth 163 times.

Whats up?

The theory of establishing a successful orbit was conceived of over a plate of Pancakes.

What else? Pancakes.

Nothing here folks, or is there?

Pancakes Wednesdays
Definitely

The Fisher House program is a unique private-public partnership that supports America's military in their time of need by providing homes close to a loved one during the hospitalization for an unexpected illness, disease, or injury.

There are currently 31 houses located on the grounds of every major military medical center and several VA medical centers. These houses will play a critical role in caring for casualties from Operation Iraqi Freedom. Donations will be used to help meet the cost of lodging for a family whose loved one was injured in Operation Enduring Freedom or Operation Iraqi Freedom. There is a limit to the number of families who can stay in a Fisher House and program is committed to help provide lodging for families who must find commercial lodging, because the Fisher House is full.

You think you're hot?
Our military forces in Iraq sweat it out in 130 degree heat everyday!
Cool Our Troops is a non-profit effort to 'Cool' our troops in Iraq. They are raising funds to send personal misters to 50,000 military personnel serving in Iraq. The misters are portable, no batteries or electricity required, and rely on evaporation to cool surrounding temperatures by 20-30 degrees.
