Heinz lecture, huh? Will he suggest that the US ought to be led by a Vietnam Veteran? Will any aspect of this speech help one of the Dem candidates to catchup with Dean?

"With the proliferation of terrorism, we're going to need to cede more influence and authority to the U.N., " he said. This sentence is utterly illogical. The UN is not even willing to enforce its own resolutions!

United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan is expected to tell a University of Pittsburgh audience today that the United States undermined global security and the U.N. itself by **unilaterally** invading Iraq, but still should play a dominant role in world affairs.
** Wow this guy leads the UN? Hey Kofi try MULILATERAL **
Annan will remind the audience that President Franklin D. Roosevelt is responsible for the U.N.'s formation. **His speech seeks to put aside portrayals of the U.N. and the United States as rivals while still criticizing the country for unilaterally invading Iraq**, according to an advance copy of the speech.
** It sounds like 'kind of pregnant'. And there's that word again.**
Saying the United States, as the world's only remaining superpower, should have a dominant leadership role in global affairs, Annan is expected to say that power comes with great responsibilities and that the United States should have used persuasion and diplomacy in Iraq rather than military power.
** Oh yes it failed for twelve years what's another hundred or so? "
"With the proliferation of terrorism, we're going to need to cede more influence and authority to the U.N., " he said.
**Says who? Beside you? **
The war prompted terrorist activity in Iraq (uh huh) and focused it on the U.S. military and U.N. representatives there, ( Isn't that multilateral?) Keller said. Had the United States opted for a multilateral approach,(we did) he said, "It wouldn't be the forces of terrorism against the United States. It would be the forces of terrorism against the multilateral forces of the world unified against them, and that would be a much better position to be in." (Oh yes it's all our fault)
Keller said he hopes Annan will speak in depth about human rights issues and peace-keeping missions.
**Oh yes we'll all feel good about ourselves and everything will stay the same.**
The speech touches on those topics --** calling the U.N's peace-keeping efforts in Bosnia and Rwanda shameful failures.** Still, Annan plans to reserve most of his remarks for the United States' role within the U.N. and as a world leader.
** Which means we get the blame because it's still our fault.**
Annan is a native of the West African nation of Ghana ( surely a model for the world) and has served as U.N. secretary-general for nearly seven years. He will receive the Heinz Humanitarian Award (a golden Ketchup bottle) for the U.N.'s campaign against malnourishment in developing countries and an honorary doctorate in public and international affairs from Pitt. The Heinz Foundation will present Annan with a $10,000 (why not euros?) check for UNICEF, founded in Pennsylvania in 1950.
"Pitt officials hope to move Annan in and out of the city today with little fanfare."
** Thus the article in the The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review bragging **

Why would we want to give the enemy any authority or influence? Most of the UN members are nothing more than tugs and terrorists themselves.

I'm surprised anyone could hear what this man was saying (with his head so far up his rump)!!
Did the guy really say that in order to deal with the highly complex issues related to international terrorism, we need to cede more power to the UN?!?!
It's like saying that "since crime has spiraled out of control, we need to cut the police force in half."
To: Willie Green
"With the proliferation of terrorism, we're going to need to cede more influence and authority to the U.N." You gotta love it. This is the same UN that recently bailed out of Bahgdad because they couldn't deal with terrorists, right?
The same UN that has no plans to return to Iraq until the US provides a totally secure enviornment?
That UN?

""With the proliferation of terrorism, we're going to need to cede more influence and authority to the U.N..."Er, Um, Ah; NO!
" Had the United States opted for a multilateral approach, he said...It would be the forces of terrorism against the multilateral forces of the world..."
Translation: 'multilateral' requires the inclusion of Germany and France.
" Keller said he hopes Annan also will talk about rising tensions with North Korea over nuclear proliferation (and) he hopes Annan will speak in depth about human rights issues and peace-keeping missions."
And, he wants a tricycle for X-mas.
"The speech...calling the U.N's peace-keeping efforts in Bosnia and Rwanda shameful failures."
At least they got one right.
" Pitt officials hope to move Annan in and out of the city today with little fanfare."
Every crime needs an access and egress plan, alternates, and some kind of diversion.

Today, smokeyb and I met with 5 or 6 other people at Soldiers and Sailor's Memorial Hall to pass out information on the UN that we all know so well.
There was a steady stream of people for about 90 minutes going into the Hall, and for a while quite a lineup to get thru security. We stationed ourselves at each of the 3 entry ways to the building to greet the people as they entered. Our approach was to smile and say hello and hand them the info. Some refused it and others came back and gave it back to us, and others still walked by with their hands in their pockets and head down. Many of these people might as well had their hands over their ears while shouting "I can't hear you."
For a setting in the midst of academia where learning is the objective, I have never met so many closed minded people. They weren't even willing to consider another point of view.
Despite the closed minded attitude most were cordial, but probably only because they didn't realize right away that we were members of the VRWC. One member of the press stopped by to question the man who organized this. They had previously met and it was quite an informal interview.
As the time neared for the speech to start, we greeted a few gentlemen who were entering the grounds and when they saw what we were handing out, one man put on his name tag and told us to get off the property. He was the Director of the Hall. He did say that the only reason that the event was going on was the money that the got for the rental of the hall. He said that they did not endorse or even condone what the UN and Kofi stood for or did, but they were paying the rent.
Had we been asked to leave earlier, we may have put up a bit of resistance, but most of the people were already in the hall. We did try to engage him in more conversation, but he just kept saying that he was asking us to leave. The implication being that if we refused, he would get the cops. I think that he overstepped his bounds, but we weren't interested in creating a scene or a bad name for those involved. An earlier encounter that I had with school police chief was much friendlier when he asked me to go out to the sidewalks. We did readily comply with that request.
All of the curbside parking was put off limits for Kofi's arrival which came with a modicum of fanfare. On a street that was totally blocked in advance, his limo arrived along with 2 other vehicles (one was a - gasp SUV) and a phalanx of police cars and motorcycle cops with sirens blaring. It was a prelude to the sycophants who were fawning over the mere mention of his name. It was a disgusting sight.
Speaking of disgusting sights, every stereotypical liberal, socialist, pointy headed professor type was abundantly represented. The closer the appearance to the stereotype, the quicker they reacted with revulsion to the idea that the UN should be asked to leave the US or for the US to get out of the UN. That was funny.
Another group was also there to protest the event. It was a group of about 10 Israeli students trying to bring attention to some Israeli's being held in the West Bank.
All in all, it was a good day. The weather most of the time was quite warm and sunny. About the time we were leaving, the skies were overcast and the temperature was dropping into the 50's from the amazing mid 60's number that we were enjoying.
We may not have changed the world's opinion today, but we FReeped and we had fun and maybe, just maybe, we did encourage some people to question their faith in the UN.

Hey koffi, there is no "global security" and that's why 9/11 happened. The UN has become the laughingstock of terrorists who view it as their first defense.

"...by unilaterally invading Iraq..."
In the early nineties, IRAQ invaded SAUDI ARABIA and the U.N. authorized the use of military force to expel the invaders. After suffering severe military losses, IRAQ agreed to a cease fire. THE WAR DID NOT END!
After more than a decade and more than a dozen U.N. resolutions which found that IRAQ had not satisfied the terms of the cease fire agreement, President Bush went to the U.N. and said that if the U.N. did not enforce their own resolutions, then the United States would!
Annin and the rest of the pimps of the U.N., who are content to wine and dine themselves at public expense in New York City, thought that President Bush was only another Billy Clintooon. THEY WERE VERY MISTAKEN!
The present coalition efforts are NOT AN INVASION of IRAQ, but they are forcing IRAQ and the useless U.N. to end the war that IRAQ started in the early nineties.
