National Convention for the Hermandad Mexicana Latinoamerica
Hermandad Mexicana ^ | October 20, 2003 | Nativo Lopez

Amigos,

Last year Hermandad Latinoamericana (formerly Hermandad Mexicana Nacional) returned to the tradition of hosting its annual convention. Our leadership focused on the mission of the prganization: Defend the rights of Spanish and indigenous-speaking immigrant workers and help their families seek their full integration inot the mainstream of American life and convened member dlegates for the first time in twelve years. It turned out to be a great success! The members left motivated and determined to improve their lives and assist other new immigrants integrate onto the very fabric of American Society, and embrace the American dream. Hermandad is the oldest and largest organizatoin of Mexican and Latino immigrants in the U. S., founded in 1951 in the city of San Diego by Mexican immigrant workers.

It was not difficult to decide on this year's theme: "Securing A Better Living With A Driver's Licence." Our plan is to discuss thoroughly the problems, responsibilities and the opportunities of immigrants owning and driving an automobile in California. Then we will present our findings to the state legislators in our continuing advocacy efforts to find ways to issue driver's licnenses ot all qualified applicants irrespective of their immigration status.

Now, more than 1,000 delegates representing ten regions are making plans to meet at our National Convention. They wil observe, participate, and take the message and spirit of the convention back home with them to share with their compatriots in their neighborhoods, churches, schools and workplaces. Come and learn about our programs to provide our members and the immigrant communities of California and other states with financial services, including banking options, real estate, mortgage lending, insurance services, and most importantly, legal and immigration services and benefits.

We invite you to be a part of this tremendous convention and grass-roots effort. We are asking for your sponsorship and participation. Please review the attached information and respond right away to take full advantage of the benefits of sponsorship. Your involvement ensures that Hermandad will speak with a stronger voice.

This year we are expanding our outreach efforts to secure greater participation at our national convention and you can benefit from these efforts. We urge you to take action now. Reserve your space. Take a leadership role. Help this noble cause.

Muchas gracias,

Nativo Lopez
National Director

Well, there are some positive messages in there as well - like "integrating into the fabric of American life" and "pursuing the American dream". At least it wasn't a clamor for more welfare and more services. It reminds me that there are illegals who just want to work and live without picking my pocket.

In my last decade in California I was

"verdaderamente desgraciado" -truly DIS-pleased-

by the palpable reality of being close to becoming a foreigner in MY OWN adoptive country.

That's the theme of my next novel, called "Domestic Enemies," set in Nuevo Mexico after the "Solo Espanol" laws are passed.

"I dunno about any "gavachos" being allowed to stay in the Aztlan after the reconquista".

If you knew me personally, you'd know I mostly try to look at the bright side of life, if only for sanity's sake. There's such an overwhelming abundance of absurdity these days that you really don't even have to get up from the couch for a laughable material.

Unfortunately, I can't find a single thing that isn't dark about this quandary. I also don't like you ending up on some list because of your lack of -blank- "ensitivity".
