Days to Live?
Comatose patient Terri Schiavo's feeding tube has been removed by court order, and she could die within two weeks. Her parents are racing against time -- and Terri's husband -- to get the ruling reversed. It's a case that has a family bitterly divided over what constitutes a life, and who should control it.

"Terri Schiavo has been in a vegetative state since 1990. Doctors say the noises and expressions she makes are reflexes and not indicative of attempts to communicate."
I'm certainly no expert on this, but that doesn't look like a reflex to me ... hmmmm ... sure seems like there might still be a viable person in a broken body ... I dunno ...

Terri could dance a jig in front of Judge Greer and still be declared vegetative if Judge Greer decided to believe a doctor who claimed it was "just reflex".

I haven't replied to any of these Terri threads yet, so here goes.
In her case, the whole situation smells, and I just can't understand how a judge could order her death based on the word of one person who says she would not want to live this way.
I have prayed for Terri and her family, and I pray that God will keep my family safe from a similar tragedy.
As for myself, I have just drawn up a living will. I would not want to live the way she is living, and I would not want to live with minimal "rehab" and be a burden on someone else for however long.
Her parents want to care for her; who will care for her after they are gone?

Another Terri Shiavo poll. 75% think that cutting off food and water is terribly wrong.

Her parents want to care for her; who will care for her after they are gone? That would be a matter to decide then and there. Perhaps her sister, perhaps nobody. But that doesn't mean she should be killed today.

The parents already made a court plea for her care, was turned down by the court.
The judge was on the board of the hospice and is a known right to die advocate!!!
A lot of posters want to know why this or that can't be tried, or they canot understand the situation, yet won't bother to read the many, many info threads on the subject.
But be warned youngsters:
Who is next??? Times are a changin...........
Better begin to take notice to this world.

Like I said, this whole situation stinks. From the start 13 years ago right up to today.
Jeb Bush should step in.

She has a brother and a sister. From appearances, I'm guessing that they are both younger than she is. They have already tried to get guardianship over Terri. You'd think the least the court would have done would've been to appoint a guardian ad-litem for her. Beyond sad, this is so disturbing!

You'd think the least the court would have done would've been to appoint a guardian ad-litem for her. Such a thing is required any time there's reason to believe there might be conflict of interest involving a guardian and his ward. Judge Greer has determined that there's not even the possibility of a conflict of interest involving Michael and Terri. Unfortunately, as a finding of fact, such determination is effectively immune from appellate challenge.

The judge was on the board of the hospice and is a known right to die advocate!!!This is not correct. Michael's lawyer, George Felos, was on the Board, but resigned after he started representing Michael. Yes, he is the one who is the right-to-die advocate. The judge is George Greer. Many people have gotten them confused because they have the same first name. I just double-checked on the hospice board of directors just to make sure that Greer has not been added. He hasn't. However, the sister of one of his bench buddies is on the Board. And Barbara Todd is also on the Board there. She worked with Greer as a county commissioner for 8 years, I believe. So Greer does have many ties with people on the board, but he is not on it himself.
To: supercat
Yes, Richard Pease was once her GAL, but Greer removed him, because he suggested that Michael did have a conflict of interest. Then Greer didn't appoint anyone in his place.

Exactly, and this is what gets missing in the emotive posts from some FReepers.
I hate that this is happening to Terri and her family.
The law sometimes sux, but it is still the law. This case smells of impropriety, but 13 years is long enough to get legal relief is any is available. The parents have been ruled against consistently.
The poor girl, baring a miracle from God, will soon die - and there seems to be nothing anyone can do about it.
There IS justice to be had, however - If not in this life, then in the next. If Terri's husband or the judge did something wrong, they WILL answer for it at some point. I guarantee it.

i'm sure that if she didn't have such a lovely trust fund, her parents would be taking care of her right now.
this makes me sick. i could NOT imagine not being able to save my own child. her parents must be in tremendous pain over this. and everything i have read so far about the court's decisions has been disgusting. i have seen the videos and i am not doctor but that woman is NOT unresponsive...
where will this end! this is setting a dangerous precedent...god help us.

The parents have been ruled against consistently. Only one judge, among all those visited, as had the authority to decide any matters of fact: Judge Greer.
Although there was another trial court judge that did take a case (and found for the Schindlers!), his ruling was overturned basically on the grounds that the Schindlers' sending the case to him constituted improper "judge shopping" and only Judge Greer was authorized to decide matters related to Terri's case.

Then why hasn't someone, anyone, appealed for Greers removal due to his obvious bias against Terri?
Why hasn't anyone filed a Federal Civil Rights case?
Like I said, this stinks!

Wait a minute.... You're telling me that NOBODY has the power to throw Greer off the case? From my understanding, that's correct. If there's any conflict of interest, or any other reason he can't decide cases in a fair and unbiased manner, he's supposed to recuse himself, but he gets to decide when those conditions apply.
Pretty nifty, huh? Terri was in big legal trouble even before her family first walked into Greer's courtroom. And the laws intended to prevent "judge shopping" merely inform that someone who hands the right judge will be at a huge advantage, and someone who gets stuck with the wrong one will be forever [bleep]ed.
