I am about to finally leave the urban jungle of Los Angeles and move down to both Louisiana and South Carolina. While I do fish out here, I have only gone hunting a few times with borrowed equipment.
I am interested in starting to hunt, and would love for any freepers to give me recommendations on a good beginner rifle, something that isn't so pricey, but reliable, as well as any other gear that I will need as a beginner.
I am not a stranger to handguns, or to military rifles, I qualified expert on both a .45 and an M16, so I am not starting from scratch, but I am looking for a rifle for deer hunting basically that will not set me back too much money, yet still be a decent value. I plan to not spend that much money so it can be economical. I do know how to fabricate a carcass, and would love to hunt for meat, without the cost of hunting making it more expensive than going to the supermarket.
Any help in this regard, web sites, consumer reports, etc, would be much appreciated. Thanks all.

A Thompson? Man, you should see the smile on my face! Extra KEWL!! And I thought I'd be lucky to find some old US coins in the souks.
Although not exactly a REMP this time, I'm still supposed to be a non-combatant. Thus the civvies and steel plates. Trust me, safety is my middle name!

I was carrying a .22 rifle at about eight years old hunting rabbits and snakes, but when I was a little bitty tyke I saw my dad kill hogs with that same .22 rifle before he cut their throat for slaughter.
I knew if that .22 would kill a hog it would kill me or anyone else.
Kids don't have an opportunity to see stuff like that nowdays.
All they see is a tiny hole in a piece of paper, and that's not real impressive.
I take the opposite view of most parents today.
I think a .22 should come after the child is older and understands the danger of that little bullet.
All kids are different, but the rule of thumb I used with my kids was to get them the biggest gun at the youngest age they could shoot it.
I agree that a bb gun and a pellet gun are perfect for training for the first rifle, and they don't present the danger to them or others that a .22 would.

My lil brother at age 8 got a free lesson once when he was "hunting " with my Dad and I . He had his Daisy Red Ryder and we were hunting quail (bird, not the brit kind :o) and he accidently shot our Black Lab in the butt. Dog about ate him up before my Dad could kick it away from him. I was laughing so hard I was crying and rollin around the ground and Suzy our Lab wasn't happy.
Dad told my brother he just got a legal lesson in ass whuppin from a puppy for being dog dumb with his gun. To this day my little brother has scars on him from that hunting trip........:o)
