Best beginner rifle (Vanity)
Vanity ^ | 10-18-03 | Me

Posted on 10/18/2003 11:37:40 AM PDT by dogbyte12

I am about to finally leave the urban jungle of Los Angeles and move down to both Louisiana and South Carolina. While I do fish out here, I have only gone hunting a few times with borrowed equipment.

I am interested in starting to hunt, and would love for any freepers to give me recommendations on a good beginner rifle, something that isn't so pricey, but reliable, as well as any other gear that I will need as a beginner.

I am not a stranger to handguns, or to military rifles, I qualified expert on both a .45 and an M16, so I am not starting from scratch, but I am looking for a rifle for deer hunting basically that will not set me back too much money, yet still be a decent value. I plan to not spend that much money so it can be economical. I do know how to fabricate a carcass, and would love to hunt for meat, without the cost of hunting making it more expensive than going to the supermarket.

Any help in this regard, web sites, consumer reports, etc, would be much appreciated. Thanks all.

Oh yeah, swabbed them out with windex at the range to neutralize the corrosive primer residue but now the real
job begins.

Ready on the left? Ready on the right? All ready on the firing line? Gentlemen you may fire on your dog targets as they appear.Commence firing.

check in on this later.

Thanks, I have bookmarked that page and will study it later.

I think I have several more knives in the bag but just don't remember them all. The Puma was purchased for $16 in 1965, last time I checked the same one was in the several hundred dollar range.

Wolfe makes some 200gr. soft tip for the 7.62x 54r that is what I shot today, copper washed steel case no good to reload but reliable and consistant, and at around $ 5 a box reasonably priced. (if you buy 10 boxes) got mine from J&G out in Prescott AZ.

Love those Moisins but the Finns, oh Momma!

Back in the 80's people thought I was nuts for keeping an emergency kit. I like having a ranger handbook in it as well and not that I can use it right now, but I also keep a small orphan .22 revolver in it.

Are those rounds reasonable? I've never had problems finding surplus rounds cheap and I don't intend to reload. Of course, Wolf only has the steel (berdan primed?) cartridges, right? The real reason I bought the Moisins is that I didn't mind burying one or two of them vs burying my SKS.

I'll have to go look into that Moisin/Nagant.....I've never been on the proper end of one of those. My all time cheepie is an Enfield buy in 303 I converted to 7.62x54R. Replaced the wood with a Choate Plastic stock and a old scope mount and a cheap tasco 10X piece of glass. Bead blasted the entire rig and dusted with paint for "plains camo". Great Truck Gun. Sounds like ya had an awesome day on the range.....but then aren't they all. Unless of course yer bench is next to eaker and ya don't have a flak vest.......:o)

This guy showed me how......

A little thing I learned in Uncle Sugars EOD world was that "Pinesol" is great for M203, M148 and M79 barrels. I use it also in my Ruger Old Army BP pistola. Does a very good job and smells purdy too !

12 months isn't "too long" is it? If I can hang that long. And I don't intend for anyone to spend any insurance money any time soon.

I was left in too many places without support to not learn fieldcraft and survival skills early on. My Eagle Scout status was tested alot those days. Small amount of gear to keep warm, signal and nourish ones self with is mandatory in our world as you know these days.

Battle Field Pickup is an option for ya these days. When I worked in Bosnia the landlady I "rented " from "gave" me a pristene Thompson M1928 Sub gun , ammo marked 1941 frankford arsenal and 13 magazines. It was brand new. That was my anti-kidnappin gear for when I was home alone there.
