The Fisher House program is a unique private-public partnership that supports America's military in their time of need by providing homes close to a loved one during the hospitalization for an unexpected illness, disease, or injury. There are currently 31 houses located on the grounds of every major military medical center and several VA medical centers. These houses will play a critical role in caring for casualties from Operation Iraqi Freedom. Donations will be used to help meet the cost of lodging for a family whose loved one was injured in Operation Enduring Freedom or Operation Iraqi Freedom. There is a limit to the number of families who can stay in a Fisher House and program is committed to help provide lodging for families who must find commercial lodging, because the Fisher House is full.

Cool Our Troops is a non-profit effort to 'Cool' our troops in Iraq. They are raising funds to send personal misters to 50,000 military personnel serving in Iraq. The misters are portable, no batteries or electricity required, and rely on evaporation to cool surrounding temperatures by 20-30 degrees.

Access the Wounded Heroes Guestbook to write a message of encouragement for a hero wounded in the line of duty.   Messages in the Wounded Heroes Guestbook are viewed by wounded soldiers, their loved ones, and the general public.

The second USS Maine (Battleship No. 10) was laid down by William Cramp & Sons, Philadelphia, Pa., 15 February 1899, a year to the day after the destruction of the first Maine; launched 27 July 1901; sponsored by Miss Mary Preble Anderson; and commissioned at Philadelphia 29 December 1902, Capt. Eugene H. C. Leutze in command.

From 1903 to 1907 Maine cruised along the Atlantic coast south to the West Indies, and she completed one cruise to the Mediterranean. On 16 December 1907 she left Hampton Roads with the rest of the Atlantic Fleet en route to the Pacific where she joined ships of that fleet for a cruise around the world. In company with the Alabama, she went to Guam and the Philippines, through the Suez Canal and the Mediterranean, and returned to the Atlantic coast in October 1908, considerably in advance of the rest of the "Great White Fleet."

She decommissioned at Portsmouth, N.H., 31 August 1909. Maine was modernized, receiving new "cage" masts and other alterations that greatly changed her appearance. Recommissioned 15 June 1911, Maine operated along the east coast. During World War I, she trained engineers, armed guard crews, and midshipmen. Following the defeat of the Central Powers, she took part in the review of the fleet at New York 26 December 1918.

Maine operated with ships of the Atlantic Fleet until 15 May 1920 when she decommissioned at Philadelphia Navy Yard. Classified as BB-10 on 17 July 1920, she was sold to J. G. Hitner & W. F. Cutler of Philadelphia, Pa., 23 January 1922; rendered incapable of further warlike service 17 December 1923; and subsequently broken up and scrapped In accordance with terms of the Washington treaty limiting naval armaments.

Gerrad bought a computer, even though he had never even used a typewriter before. After investigating the computer, he decided to call the help line. A friendly voice explained step by step how his new machine worked. All went well until the voice told him to press the space bar. After studying the keyboard, Gerrad said; "I've got the latest model and it doesn't have a space bar." But after further explanation, he managed to find it.

A week later, Gerrad again had problems and called the help line. An instructor was then sent to his house for training. But after a few minutes, Gerrad's head was spinning. "You don't need to go any further," he sighed, I don't understand a thing."

To cheer him up, the instructor said: "Hey, there are people who understand a lot less than you. Last week we had someone on the phone who didn't even know where the space bar was!"

HELLO, Canteeners and fellow FReepers! LC here, checking back in after a 3-week detachement to the Mediterranean Op-area, where elements of VP-10 (my squadron) participated in operation ENDURING FREEDOM and also aided operations in Kosovo. We were (and are) bolstering the PELICANS of VP-45 in their efforts, and our P-3 ORIONs were used to their fullest, as were we.

Some missions were quite nerve-wracking and scary, and some lasted over 16 hours, but we did it all with our usual enthusiasm and good cheer. As for specifics, well, the President said some battles in this war would remain in the shadows, and so they shall. All our crews are safe and sound as of this writing, however, although life was made miserable for some deserving individuals.

I am currently back up in Iceland, although the scuttlebutt has us moving back to the Med at some point. Mrs. Cut and Mini-Cut are still healthy and holding down the homefront nicely, although we obviously all miss each other terribly. She is about the best in a woman and mother a man could ask for, and she does an outstanding job at a task which seems far more difficult than mine.

Mini-Cut has now celebrated his 3-month birthday, and has also doubled his birth weight. In every picture I get, his precious face is wearing a joyful, happy smile, and this inspires me in ways I never thought possible. God, I love that little guy.

Beagle-Cut is also doing well, being now heartworm-free, although he is getting "THAT" operation this week, so I hope he's not too depressed. Hopefully, our male cat will stop trying to kill him. The female uses him for a cushoin.

I do hope everyone of you is doing well, yourselves, and that "the home front" is as well. I miss my home very much, and America, the land is never far from my thoughts. Thank you ALL once again for your unwavering support. We all appreciate it, and we all hope to be home soon.

Keep up the good work, it is needed as much as ever!!!!!!!

1784 Birth of Thomas Hastings, American sacred composer. Hastings was an albino afflicted with extreme nearsightedness, yet from his pen came such enduring hymn tunes as TOPLADY ("Rock of Ages") and ORTONVILLE ("Majestic Sweetness Sits Enthroned").
1790 Ann Teresa Mathews (aka Mother Bernardina) and Frances Dickinson founded a convent of Discalced Carmelites (a contemplative working order) in Port Tobacco, Maryland. It was the first Catholic convent founded in the United States.
1840 In Melville, Missouri, the Evangelical Synod of North America was founded. It later became one of the branches of today's United Church of Christ.
