Who cares? Wow Lena Horne and Catwoman were both half white, but you can be sure Hollyweird would have never let them play white women. At the same time, I notice during black history month, they scrap together anyone with a ounce of black blood and put them up as 'great blacks who are credit to our race'.

Some people want to be left alone by the racial bean counters. I am so sick of us conservatives getting accused of racism when the LIBS are more racist than anyone. Who was more supportive of Tiger Woods? Was it all the smarmy liberals? No they were too busy whining that Tiger wouldn't acknowledge 'his blackness' when in fact all he wanted was to be left alone and play golf.

LEAVE RITA HAYWORTH ALONE. I have 'conquistador' blood. My mother is from the West Indies. I like Celia Cruz but not because she's hispanic. I love her music! Hey Frank Sinatra? I'm Siciliana too, but these idiots don't realize how much The Chairman helped black people without parading it on the news.

Whatever, I hate liberals. They sicken me.

Bilingual education is the greatest method ever devised, to arrest language acquisition.

And to assure that the slaves stay on the Democrat plantation.

Good article.

Imagine if a white TV host said, "I think it’s hard for non-whites to understand how important Frank Sinatra was to whites."

Wrong analogy. Better would be "hard to imagine non english speakers understanding..."

Hispanic is not a race.

The whole PC diversity stuff is garbage thought.

But too often criticisms of it are off the mark.

Many African-Americans claim Celia, who, after all is AFRO-CUBAN and was proud of it! Even the well-intentioned yokel who wrote this article fails to comprehend that what are grouped by the the "Booboisie" and the civil rights pimps as "Latinos" are a racially and culturally diverse lot. Don't get me started on the idiots here in NYC who refer to Afro-Dominicans as "Spanish."

This guy makes some good points, but sounds like another whiner to me for the most part. Besides, Frankie S was half-Sicillian, making him an "African" in the eyes of many northern Italians anyway.

I LOVE the games we play with race and ethnicity in this country, don't you? :-)

An Hispanic in the Confederacy who was more important than Robert E. Lee? Do they think Pierre Beauregard was Hispanic? Or are they confusing Judah P. Benjamin with Benjamin Disraeli?

Lolita Lopez, who reacts as if she were hearing the name Rita Hayworth for the first time, informs us that "people didn’t know that" Hayworth was Hispanic. Watkins adds, helpfully, that "Maybe it was because it was not so popular for someone to be" Hispanic back then. "Not so popular," as in THOSE RACIST WHITES.

This is hilarious, when you consider that in the 20s and 30s especially, actors were changing their names to become ``latin.'' Especially after the popularity of Rudolph Valentino.

One example is the case of actor Ricardo Cortez. He was an Austrian, born in Vienna under the name Jacob Krantz. He changed his name to Ricardo Cortez, and his birthplace to Spain when he hit Hollywood. Check him out in the original version of The Maltese Falcon, called Dangerous Female, as Sam Spade. Even his brother, who was a cinematographer, changed his last name to Cortez.

It certainly didn't hurt Xavier Cugat's career.

Three things...

Hayworth was born in BROOKLYN.

50% of NYC HS students fail to graduate in 4 years, 30% fail to get GED by 21.

Marysol Castro is the sexiest NYC talking head...dumb as a stump but so sweet.

However, the real reason Rita Hayworth wasn’t known as a "Hispanic," was that she wasn’t one. Her father, dancer (and son of a dancer) Eduardo Cansino, immigrated to America from Spain in 1913; Rita was born in Manhattan on October 17, 1918. Until a few years ago, "Hispanic" referred to countries that had been conquered by Spain, and where Spanish was spoken, but not to Spain itself. Hispanic nationalists then decided to eliminate the distinction between conqueror and conquered, as regards Spain, replacing it in the role of conqueror and colonial power -- history be damned -- with the U.S.

There is so much historical revisionism and just plain B.S. here that a lesson is in order.

The word “Hispanic” has only recently been co-opted as the Politically Correct code word for “non-white Spanish speakers” just like the word “immigrant” has been co-opted to mean “illegal alien” and the word “gay” has been co-opted to mean….well, never mind. You get the picture.

“Hispania” was the Roman name for the Iberian Peninsula just like “Britannia” was the Roman name for the British Isles.

The 1973 Webster’s Dictionary defines Hispanic as: Adj [Latin “hispanicus” from “Hispania” Iberian peninsula, Spain]: of or relating to the people, speech or culture of Spain, Spain and Portugal or Latin America.”

If anyone has a claim to the name “Hispanic” it is a Spaniard from the Iberian Peninsula and, in Latin America, that is exactly what the term “Hispano” means, something with a direct relationship to Spain. A European Spanish bank doing business in Mexico or elsewhere in the world would call itself “Hispano”. For example: Santander Central Hispano.

In Mexico, individuals who still bears a huge chip on their shoulder that their Indian ancestors were conquered by Spain would go ballistic if you called them “Hispanos” just as Irish Republicans would go ballistic if you called them “British”.

“Hispania”, like “Britannia” has a proud history. Hispania was part of Roman civilization 200 years before the British Isles were ever civilized. Hispania produced the two “Good Emperors” Trajan and Hadrian. Yet, Politically Correct speech has stripped the ancient title of Hispania from Spain.

There is no “Hispanic” race any more than there is a “Britannic” race.

My own family has it’s roots in Galicia and Asturias the ancient Celtic areas of northern Spain by way of Cuba for a few generations. My great-grandfather, my grandfather, my father, myself and my children were all born blond and blue-eyed as were most of their their ancestors since before they ever came in contact with the Romans 2100 years ago. However, so-called “Anglos” now label me “Hispanic” because I was born in Cuba and declare that I am no longer white.

What’s up with that?

If you note, in ”I Love Lucy”, Ricky Ricardo never referred to himself as “Hispanic”. He referred to himself as “Cuban”.

Much confusion would be avoided is so-called “Anglos” adopted the Cuban habit of just plain calling things as they are. For example, Cubans would ethnically and racially classify the following individuals as follows:

Celia Cruz: Cubana Negra (Cuban Black)

Daisy Fuentes: Cubana Blanca (Cuban White)

Jennifer Lopez: Puertoriqueña Mulata (Puerto Rican Mulata)

Edgar Martinez: Puertoriqueña Blanco (Puerto Rican White)

Cruz Bustamante: Mexicano Mestizo (Mexican Mestizo)

Peruvian ex-President Alberto Fujimori: Peruano Japones (Peruvian Japanese)

"The Rape of Rita Hayward," is one of the most ignorant and bigoted articles I've seen in a long time. Author Nicholas Stix gets bent out of shape because a TV commentator during the Hispanic Day Parade said: "I think it’s hard for non-Hispanics to understand how important Celia was to Hispanics." To Stix, Hispanics are a race on to themselves and the TV commentator's remark is the equivilant of a hypothetical commentator saying "I think it’s hard for non-whites to understand how important Frank Sinatra was to whites."

The fact is that Hispanics can be any race or ethnicity: white, black, Asian, Indian, mestizo, mulatto, they can be Jewish, Christian, Muslim or Buddhist. In other words, Hispanics are not a race and they can't and shouldn't be pigeonholed. Celia Cruz is an example of a black Cuban, Andy Garcia, Gloria Estefan, and Cameron Diaz are white Cubans. They are all Hispanics, one is black and three are white. The former president of Argentina, Saul Menem was a hispanic of Syrian/Lebanese ancestry, former Perurian president, Alberto Fujimori was a Hispanic of pure Japanese ancestry. The diversity within the hispanic community is astounding! For instance, there are an estimated 800,000 Hispanic Jews [some Ashkenazim, others sephardim] in Latin America, the ubiquitous Chinese can be found everywhere from Cuba to Argentina. All of these groups are now part of the Hispanic family. Anyone of these people can rightfully be called Hispanic.

Finally, Stix's remark that "Hispanic" originally only referred to the colonies of Spain [where on earth does he get this from???], and therefore, Rita Hayward whose father was from Spain is not Hispanic is the height of absurdity. This is the equivilant of saying that Tony Blair is not an Anglo [i.e. Anglo Saxon] because only people from the former British colonies are Anglos, so that President Bush is an Anglo, but not Blair! The fact is that the word "Hispanic" means of/or pertaining to Hispania which is the Latin word for Spain. Latin Americans--regardless of race-- are called Hispanic because of their relationship to Spain. Even those that are not of Spanish ancestry live in countries that were founded by Spain, countries that were culturally influenced by Spain and countries where people speak Spanish. This is why they are called Hispanics regardless of race. How then can the people in honor of whom Latin Americans are now called Hispanics not be Hispanics themselves?

Sadly, words get co-opted by political groups with agendas, and they become distorted in our popular vernacular and our popular culture. It is unfortunate when this happens and even more unfortunate when irresponsible and ignorant writers like Stix continue to perpetuate these distortions.
