Today marks the first broadcast day of Rush Limbaugh's four-week hiatus for treatment of his dependency on prescription pills, and many on the left couldn't be happier. The left typically shows more compassion for a mass murder who lost his latest appeal than they are showing for Limbaugh. So, where is all of this much-celebrated liberal compassion? I suppose we forgot that liberals usually show their compassion by spending someone else's money.
Some on the left are looking at Rush's month of drug rehab as the perfect time to do a little "kicking while they're down." Evan Thomas writes this in a current Newsweek article: "The man behind the curtain is not the God of Family Values but a childless, twice-divorced, thrice-married schlub whose idea of a good time is to lie on his couch and watch football endlessly. Nice."
It's odd, isn't it? The left can't find a way to criticize a welfare brood mare who downloads a succession of future jail inmates she can't possibly afford to raise, but they're eager to apply the "childless" label to someone who can afford to raise a child, but has none.
NOW --- ABOUT THAT WAR ON DRUGS
A question for those of you out there who are so adamant about pushing this illogical war on drugs. So, you like to see drug pushers in jail, right? And those people who buy drugs from those pushers? You want them in jail too, right? Yeah, damn right! Lock them all up!
Most of the people who adopt this "take no prisoners" attitude on drugs are conservative. Most, not all. Read the law. If Rush Limbaugh was doing those things that the National Enquirer says he was doing, then he could conceivably face quite a lengthy jail term. Is that what you want? Are you grumbling to yourself that Rush ought to be getting his treatment in a hospital jail ward somewhere?
What's the deal here? You're celebrating (as you should) Rush's decision to seek treatment. If this is such a good option for Rush (and it is) then why isn't it a good option for some sap from the inner city who succumbs to neighborhood peer pressure and gets hooked on drugs?
This'd be a built-in defense for anyone busted for possession of illegal drugs. The defense attorney would conjure up some medical condition--discovered after an exam by a doctor hired by the defense attorney--and poof! The defense attorney says, "your honor, my client wasn't using drugs for recreation. My client had a previously undiagnosed medical condition and he was self-medicating. We move to dismiss the charges."
Child, heck he could afford to raise a whole village!
Does anybody know if Marta has any children? I thought I heard a radio personality, in extending his thoughts and prayers to Rush and his family, mention stepchildren. I could understand Rush not wanting to make such info public for privacy reasons, but if he does have stepchildren, it just shows more of the deceptiveness of the left by Mr. Thomas making such a statement.
Whether you buy a pharm drug off the street, or rock cocaine; they are both ILLEGAL.
With a bad back, golf is the last thing he should be playing. His life will be a mess for years to come and there is only one answer to walk away from his addiction and that is Jesus, which has been proven over and over. It worked for my drug addiction and never had an urge to use again. Sorry Rush, your a genius but all the money in the world will not solve this problem. Only your admittance to your humanity and put your life in the hands of the Savior.
Pray for GW and Rush
Hmm. I wasn't aware that "ordinary druggies" , that is , drug BUYERS were getting prison terms. In some states, they're letting the SELLERS off for a first offense.
If he goes then miliions of others would have to go as well, including my ex-wife who in fact went to treatment 3 times for PRESCRIPTION pain killers before she finally came clean.
Maybe it's the doctors that should go to jail !!
As painful as it is I agree w/ that (criminal punishment). However, as a first time offender I believe his punishment would be slight. As someone who has had to deal w/ drug addiction in our family I can tell you that what the criminal code exacts is nothing compared to the personal devastation caused by serious drug abuse.
This whole situation is, to me, reminiscent of the Priest/pedophile debacle we Catholics have had to endure these last several years. As painful as it is to go through, its still better to get it out into the fresh air and stop the festering poison.
Conservatives will have to put up w/, just as Catholics have, the derisive insults from people who have harbored hatred towards us for years.
The challenge will be to remain true to our principles and not to duck into cynicism and disbelief. Conservatism is larger than any individual and will survive as a movement. By holding ourselves to a higher standard, that is by facing our shortcomings honestly, we will in the long run prevail.
My prayers go out to Rush and his family, just remember big guy, opportunity sometimes comes from unexpected places.
Sorry, I must respectfully totally and completely disagree. Your analogy is completely illogical. For example, "There should be a difference, however, between armed robbery committed for obtaining money, and armed robbery, when committed for the purpose of a thrill.". The motive is irrevilant; the crime was committed with full knowledge that the actions were outside the bounds of the law.
Millions of people use pain killers under medical care, and then pursue non-narcotic pain killers for pain managment. My wife went though Pancreatitus (rated the #1 most painful event a human can endure). She spent 10 days on Morphine, then went to codine; then asprin. She does not wear a cape and tights (well, except for Friday nites .... but I digress). I was on morphine during my Gal Bladder surgery. We both managed without becomming addicted. Rush CHOSE to pursue these illegal drugs, with the excuse that they were for pain management. If pain management were indeed the issue, a qualified MD would have kept Rush under supervision.
Liberals will very predictably call this a racist remark, yet race is nowhere to be seen in it... thus displaying their own inherent racism, since they see all welfare mothers as belonging to a single race.
And I agree totally. As a first time offender, Rush should neither recieve anything more, or less; than what anyone else would get.
I admire Rush. I listen to him when I can; I have purchased both of his books, and usually agree with his points (but not always). I respect his ability to very clearly and suscintly illustrate his points. One of the points I have disagreed with him on, is how he treats the "war on drugs'. Now, he is involved with the consequences of his actions. If he had espoused the 'WOD' like I had; I would have had some sympathy for him. As he was a leader in the "Prohibition" view of WOD, I find it amusing how hypocritical this has become.
The grandson of Norman Thomas
"Norman Mattoon Thomas, b. Marion, Ohio, Nov. 20, 1884, d. Dec. 19, 1968, was six times an unsuccessful Socialist party candidate for president of the United States between 1928 and 1948. A Presbyterian minister in East Harlem's slums, he became a pacifist and opposed American entry into World War I. In 1917 he helped found what became the American Civil Liberties Union. Thomas joined the Socialist party in 1918 and became its leader in 1926. Espousing a moderate, non-Marxist brand of socialism, he failed (except in the 1932 election) to halt the decline of his party."
Continued at link. (And I've always wondered just how much Evan Thomas takes after his grandfather...)
What's the difference? Pain comes in a variety of forms.
Why should we make excuses and feel compassion for Rush while condemning others? Is it because we agree with his politics and can more easily identify with him than some black kid that was born without much of a chance?
