Bloomberg: Pedro should have been arrested

Associated Press NEW YORK -- Boston Red Sox ace Pedro Martinez should have been arrested for throwing 72-year-old Yankees coach Don Zimmer to the ground during Game 3 of the American League Championship Series, Mayor Michael Bloomberg said Sunday.
"If that happened in New York we would have arrested the perpetrator," Bloomberg said. "Nobody should throw a 70-year-old man to the ground, period. You start doing that pretty soon you're going to throw a 61-year-old man to the ground, and I have a big vested interest in that."
"You just cannot assault people, even if it's on a baseball field," added Bloomberg, who was asked about Saturday's bench-clearing matchup before marching in the Bronx Columbus Day Parade.
Bloomberg was referring to a fourth-inning melee in which Zimmer lunged at Martinez and Martinez grabbed the older man by the head and tossed him to the ground. Zimmer was taken to a hospital after the game as a precaution; he was later released with a small cut on the bridge of his nose.
The mayor did not comment on the ninth-inning scuffle between two Yankees players and a member of the Boston grounds crew. Boston police said Sunday they were seeking witnesses to that fight.
The Yankees won Saturday's game 4-3.

If you start arresting people for on the field actions, you would have to arrest every NHL player.

Zimmer ran at Martinez and took a swing at him. He assulted Martinez. Getting thrown to the ground was an effective way of neutralizing that assault. Martinez did the right thing.

You just cannot assault people, even if it's on a baseball field," Zimmer assaulted Martinez; he charged him and took a swing- Martinez was entitled to defend himself, and in fact took it easy on Zimmer.
If somebody throws a roundhouse punch at me , I'll put them down-yes even if they're 72.
If Zimmer is spry enough to take a poke at somebody, he's spry enough to live with the result.

That twit bloomberg acts like a junior high school principal, where if someone has a fight brought to them and the person being attacked defends himself, he gets in just as much or more trouble than the one who started it. You're just supposed to be a good little victim and take the beating.

"Nobody should throw a 70-year-old man to the ground, period. You start doing that pretty soon you're going to throw a 61-year-old man to the ground, and I have a big vested interest in that." I'm no fan of Bloomberg, but I saw the video - and heared the vocal inflections, and it was a lame attempt at a joke.

I didn't see the game but got the play-by-play from my brother, who did. I heard Zimmer's tearful apology on the radio today. The guy made an ass out of himself (as did the other three knuckleheaded participants) and unlike them, he's mature enough to know it. He sounded pathetic on the radio.
I can't imagine being so mad you charge somebody, and then being all weepy about it inside of 24 hours. Not sober, anyway.
Pa-flippin-thetic.

From my understanding Zimmer rushed Pedro, so Zimmer is the one who should be charged.

I saw the video. Pedro barely touched him. Zimmer ran into his extended arm and fell down. He was never struck with a fist and Pedro made no agressive move at all. All he did was put his arm out in front of him well before Zimmer ran into it.
Zimmer then put ona big show of checking if he hurt his head. Very lame.

Yup. I saw it when it happened and I've seen the video many times since. Pedro was very restrained BECAUSE it was an old man. Had it been someone else he no doubt would have hammered them, and rightly so.
Zimmer ended up with a small bandaid on his nose. Waaaaaaa.

Bloomberg is a real d!ck. He would never have called for the arrest of a Yankee player in a situation like this.

I saw the tape, too, and Martinez just deflected the guy to the ground. What was he supposed to do, take a hit from the guy?
This sounds like democrat tactics: "He's hostile towards seniors!"

Sounds like a TYPICAL Democrat......they can take swipes at anyone (verbal or physical).....but it's unfair if any of those they attack try to protect themselves.

I was listening to the game, and they said Zimmer charged at Pedro, and all Pedro did was throw him away after Zimmer swung at Pedro!
Their commentary was all about how Zimmer attack Pedro and Pedro non-chalantly shoved Zimmer away, to lightly defend himself, and that Zimmer got in a good shot first.
I didnt see it, what happened?
