DEAN WINS 2Q FUNDRAISING PRIMARY.

From news reports and statements released by the various Democratic Presidential candidates, former Vermont Governor Howard Dean finished first in the most recent "money primary." Dean surprised all his rivals by placing first in the money hunt for the 2Q 2003 period that ended June 30 -- raising $7.5 million from 59,000 individual contributors. US Senator John Kerry was next with an estimated $6 million.

US Senators Joe Lieberman and John Edwards say each of their campaigns raised at least $5 million for the quarter. Lieberman -- who still leads in national polls -- surprised the pundits who mistakenly predicted he would raise less than $4 million for the quarter. Congressman Dick Gephardt's campaign appears to have raised almost $5 million.

US Senator Bob Graham's campaign said it raised somewhere between $2-3 million. Congressman Dennis Kucinich showed a major jump in fundraising, reporting in excess of $1 million for the quarter -- almost six times the paltry amount he raised in the previous quarter.

Former US Senator Carole Moseley Braun said she raised $150,000. Of course, you know a campaign is big trouble when a spokesperson had to add that Braun was "staying in the race." In what is typically a sign of financial problems, Al Sharpton's campaign said it would not release figures until the formal July 15th due date.

President Bush, meanwhile, will report raising $34 million for the quarter. By contrast -- and to save you from doing the math -- the above Dems raised a combined total of around $32 million.

And, we should add, the President raised $34M in six weeks, since he didn't even start fundraising until the middle of May. So in six weeks he raised more than the Democrats combined raised in three months.
