GOP's Engel to challenge Rep. Cramer in November
6/05/02
From Staff Reports
Bud Cramer's Republican opponent for Congress in November will be aerospace engineer Stephen Engel of Athens.
In a quiet race between two political unknowns, Engel got about 56 percent of the vote Tuesday to defeat Michael Williams, a graduate student at the University of Alabama in Huntsville.
Cramer, a Huntsville Democrat, has held the 5th District seat in the U.S. House of Representatives since 1990. After strong early challenges, he has lately drawn only token opposition; this will be the first time since 1998 that he's had a Republican opponent.
Engel said he will speak before as many small, conservative groups as possible in his campaign.
''You go with the ideology,'' he said. ''People either buy into it, or they don't."
Williams couldn't be reached for comment on the results of the race. ''If they come in too late at night, I'm probably going to go to sleep,'' he said earlier in the day.
Complete but unofficial results had Engel with 13,968 votes to Williams' 11,068.

Stephen Engel bases his House campaign on U.S. Constitution
03/27/02
From Staff Reports
An Athens man hopes to win the Republican nod to challenge Democratic U.S. Rep. Bud Cramer this fall on a platform based on the U.S. Constitution's preamble.
"I believe this country was founded on principles that are embodied in the Constitution, and we should still be following those principles in our system of government," said Stephen Engel, a field engineer for major defense contractor Northrop Grumman.
Engel, 50, said his campaign will center on the four areas the Constitution's preamble lists as the fundamental roles of government:
Establish justice - "The greatest injustice perpetrated on the citizens of the United States since the founding of the country is the murder of the innocent via state-sanctioned abortion," Engel said. "Therefore, I am pro-life."
Ensure domestic tranquility - "This includes our police force," Engel said, "but must be augmented by the citizens protecting themselves and their families from those who would wish to harm them, both criminal, and tyrannical.
''This translates as being pro-gun, or pro-Second Amendment."
Provide for the common defense - "I believe our military should be prepared for both conventional and nuclear war," said Engel, who supports developing a national missile defense system.
Promote the general welfare - "Taxes are too high, placing an unfair burden on families," Engel said, and the nation's schools are being controlled by those "who believe it is wrong to mention God or the Ten Commandments in the schools, but it is OK to promote and teach the homosexual and lesbian agenda."
Engel was born in McAllen, Texas. The son of missionaries, he lived in southern Mexico until entering high school. After a year at Columbia Bible College, Engel enlisted in the Air Force in 1971 and served until 1978. Engel attended Capitol Institute of Technology in Kensington, Md., and technical schools while in the military, where he specialized in radar.
He was the Alabama communications coordinator for GOP presidential candidate Alan Keyes in 2000 and participated in the pro-life march in Washington on the 25th anniversary of the Roe vs Wade Supreme Court decision legalizing abortion in 1998.
Engel and his wife, Maria, have two daughters.
Two other Republicans, Michael Williams of Gurley and Matthew Boenker of Huntsville, have announced their candidacies for the June 4 GOP primary for the 5th Congressional District seat.
Cramer, of Huntsville, is seeking his seventh term. Thus far, he has no Democratic opposition.
I am the political director for Stephen Engel's congressional campaign. We are the most conservative elected nominee for U.S. House in the entire country and congress. We are running against a DEMOCRAT who poses as a moderate but is a liberal. He has a 40% rating by the National Right to Life Comm., VOTED for SHAYS-Meehan ANTI-FREE SPEECH bill, labeled a gun rights compromiser, supports the UN consistently, tax and spend democrat, 33% rating by Citizens Against Gov't waste, 8% rating by taxpayers for common sense, 45% rating by Citizens for a Sound Economy, voted against a bill allowing education funds to go only to schools that ALLOW VOLUNTARY prayer. We are at a HUGE financial disadvantage so small contributions from many strong conservative individuals from across the nation is the only thing that can overcome that. Congressman Cramer is on th Appropriations Comm. thereby having a stranglehold on financial backing in our district. Please contact me ASAP if you can help in any way!

If Senator King does the work of running a good campaign, and he will, he should win handily.
Steve Engel has a steeper hill to climb, although it is definitely not insurmountable. He is facing an incumbent, which is always a big challenge. But the district is not a slam dunk for the Dems by any means.
I would urge anyone who can to help these great men out by sending them the most generous contribution you can.

I'm new to Free Republic; somebody please explain to me what a bump is.
Hello, welcome to Free Republic! How did you discover this magnificent place? Let me guess, you're 16 years old and you was born in 1986, right? You're pretty close to my age, I'm only 18. Seems like everyone else is old in this forum, lol!
Anyway a bump is to send this article back to the top of the latest list.
The famous saying is, "If you're under 25, and you're a Republican, you have no heart! If you're over 40 and you're a Democrat, you have no brain!
The famous saying is, "If you're under 25, and you're a Republican, you have no heart! If you're over 40 and you're a Democrat, you have no brain!
We old fogies may have more experience, but generally speaking, y'all have us beat in the passion and idealism departments hands down! ;-)
By the way, I know the young man who posted this article...and believe it or not, he is your age guys...I worked closely with him in the last Presidential election, and now he is the political director for a Congressional campaign!
Welcome to the best place on the web...and to the ranks of the conservative movement...which is the only hope for protecting and restoring our free republic...the United States of America.
I would be honored if I could help you in any way to become the most effective force you can be in the political arena. We need you...your gifts and talents are unique and critical to the future.
Two things:
1. Our nation is built on the premise that our rights to life, liberty and private property come from the Creator, and are therefore unalienable (man didn't give them, and therefore can not be allowed to take them away).
2. As Thomas Jefferson also said, "The price of liberty is eternal vigilance'.
Warmest regards,
EV
Thanks for the praise. It is really quite amazing that we even have a place like Free Republic. There was no such thing 5 years ago. We are the Left's worst nightmare, since they do not have something that can be compared to this. With 50,000 dedicated FReepers, we can recapture America from the Left! I'm optimistic, things will change for the better!
Actually, you're luckier living in Maryland. At least Maryland has ONE conservative in congress (Rep. Roscoe Bartlett, 6th district) Mass. can't even get RINOs elected to Congress.
