The numbers prove it: by 1776 the USA had about half a million permanent African slaves and about 50,000 temporary white indentured servants.
White indentured servitude was outlawed in the early 1800s, without a civil war, while abolishing African slavery cost the lives of roughly 700,000 young American soldiers, not to mention other destruction.

But the descendants of none of those prisoners or indentured servants were still "white slaves" 100 years later, much less 200 years later as was the case with African slaves.
