Republicans need to unite in defense of America’s culture
NY Post ^ | 7-5-2020 | Tom Klingenstein

Today’s Republican Party is lost. There is no clear mission driving the GOP. Some Republicans may describe their mission as “freedom” or “limited government.” But this is only a means to a mission. These maxims don’t provide guidance as to what the government should be doing at any particular time.

A better mission is this: to “preserve the American way of life.” This is a shorthand for securing the conditions necessary to pursue a worthy life — what the Founders meant by “happiness” in the Declaration of Independence.

America used to see ourselves as one people with a single culture, directed by the Declaration, supported by the Judeo-Christian ethos and shaped by our history. Of course, there were sub-cultures, but we understood them as all sharing the fundamental attributes of a single culture. We insisted that immigrants be assimilated. Colorblindness was our ideal.

And of course that is exactly what GOP won't do. The author could have just stopped at "Today’s Republican Party is lost toast." and end it like that.

Does anyone have any idea what the GOP stands for, other than their own re-election?

Its a party without a soul or convictions.

Muh Paycheck, Muh "Principles" and Muh Loyal Opposition to the Democrat Rulers.

They don't understand that Trump has drawn back the curtain on their shenanigans.

Good luck getting elected or re-elected when your 51% to 49% margin of victory over the Democrat goes to 40% Pubbie to 60% Democrat because the conservative base had to wash its collective hair on election day...

The GOP has never wanted to lead. They are much more comfortable being spectators while the Democrats control the field of play.

Pretty sad state of affairs nowadays, that “everything” has to be spelled out, for the young and the “Republicans”.

People who hold opposite views are already lost, they are TWANLOCs. Scary to think they mount to at least half of the country.

Democrats: We will destroy America.
Republicans: We’ll stand back and watch.

The party has been that way since 1998 or so, but has gotten particularly aimless since 2006. RINOs are most responsible for this as they don't want conservatives to have a voice in the party (other than the usual lip service). There is all kinds of opportunity to make gains in areas that the GOP has given up on, but they don't even try.

We gonna defend our culture or do you want continuous wars with Afghanistan, Iran, China and Russia?

Believe it or not the deep state thinks its a choice.

The GOP is gutless. If they manage to sabotage President Trump’s re-election the party will cease to exist.

The New Deal, Dean Acheson wrote approvingly in a book called A Democrat Looks At His Party, “conceived of the federal government as the whole people organized to do what had to be done.” A year later, Mr. (Arthur) Larson wrote A Republican Looks At His Party, and made much the same claim in his book for modern Republicans. The “underlying philosophy” of the New Republicanism, said Mr. Larson, is that “if a job has to be done to meet the needs of the people, and no one else can do it, then it is the proper function of the federal government.”

Here we have, by prominent spokesmen of both political parties, an unqualified repudiation of the principle of limited government. There is no reference by either of them to the Constitution, or any attempt to define the legitimate functions of government. The government can do whatever needs to be done; note, too, the implicit but necessary assumption that it is the government itself that determines what needs to be done. We must not, I think, underrate the importance of these statements. They reflect the view of a majority of the leaders of one of our parties, and of a strong minority among the leaders of the other, and they propound the first principle of totalitarianism: that the State is competent to do all things and is limited in what it actually does only by the will of those who control the State. …

The Conscience of a Conservative (1960), Chapter 2, page 15
More like ideologically left-wing rather than “gutless”, which implies that they were right-wing in some capacity but compromised their values out of fear. No such thing.

I do not think in term of what the government should be doing at any particular time, other than reducing its size, cutting taxes, balancing the budget, eliminating laws and regulations, and getting the hell out of my life. That is freedom. That is small government. I guess I am the one that has no mission, but I do have vision. The author shouldn't split hairs: vision <-- mission <-- goal & objectives <-- action. The GOP lacks all of these.

Yes, the Republican Party has made it abundantly clear over the last 40 years that they have no interest in fighting the culture war. If they participate at all, it’s more often than not fighting against us.

They stand for money and power for those in control of the party, just like every other political party in the history of civilization.

They must be completely short term thinkers. So they enjoy the power they personally have now, all the while they must know they are responsible for the GOP to end up in the dust bin or history. By actively engaging in the push for the Mexican invasion they must know this will result in the permanent flipping of seats to the Democrats?

Amen! Freedom and limited government are NOT “means to a mission” - they are simply a recognition of the natural limits on what any government is competent or ethically justified to do.

Well, on that point, I think they were just completely delusional and thought if they could only pass the amnesty bill, they could get all the new immigrants to become GOP voters and have their own little demographic fiefdom like the left had the blacks since the 60s.
