When Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed a rally of 50,000 Indian Americans in Houston last month, a planned guest appearance by President Donald Trump stole the headlines. But a telling moment arrived when the announcer at the event called Howdy Modi began reading a prepared list of members of Congress who had been expected to attend. Among those named was Texas Rep. Al Green, a Democrat. But Green wasnt there. A day earlier, he had announced in a statement that he was bailing from the event, calling it a photo op for Trump. He wasnt alone.
India, a key strategic partner, has for decades enjoyed bipartisan support in Washington. But the growing public bonhomie between Modi and Trump and rising concerns over the Indian governments lockdown on Kashmir are creating tensions between sections of the Democratic Party and New Delhi. And that could open a rare window for Republicans to target Indian American voters in 2020, say some leaders of the community, which has decisively leaned Democratic historically.
While political commentators focused on Trump as he stood by Modi, the Houston event was marked by the absence of multiple Democratic members of Congress who turned down invitations even as the White House announced that the president would be attending. Speaker Nancy Pelosi, California Rep. Brad Sherman and presidential candidate Rep. Tulsi Gabbard were among those who chose not to attend, citing prior commitments. Sherman had previously been actively tweeting to ask his constituents to attend the Houston rally. Gabbard, the first Hindu member of Congress, has attended multiple past events with the RSS the Hindu nationalist parent organization of Modis BJP party. In 2014, she had even gifted Modi her childhood copy of the Bhagavad Gita.

Dems are such creepy primadonnas...
I hope they are all smart enough and will vote for Trump and Republicans.
i’ve never met an indian who wasn’t a collectivist... good luck getting them on our side.
if we’re going to focus on races/ethnicities... 90% of our efforts need to be on hispanics.
What did it cost him to speak to that rally?
no cost... and I’m not saying he shouldn’t have spoken there... i guess my point is there are many more hispanics and many are easier to reach.
We have a huge Indian community in NJ, so perhaps some of them could be persuaded to vote for Trump, as a result of this rally.
could happen... but I’m a skeptic when it comes to that community. hope I’m wrong.
Many Indians are individualists. Sikhs are far more conservative in every sense than other Hindus. Very pro 2nd Amendment in philosophy.
There are many Hindu sects, historically based on caste. Caste is very Democratic Partyish. They invented identity politics before the Ivy League invented it.
But American Hindus intentionally break away from the caste system.... somewhat.
Hindus are very split on abortion, gay marriage, etc. Half are very traditional family values. Half are quite “Bollywood”.
Hispanics are also very split. Mexicans are split 4 ways: Populist left like President Obrador. Ideological left like PRD. Corruption center left like PRI. Social Conservative Right like Calderon, President 2006-2012. And finally Libertarian leaning, Globalist Capitalist like Vicente Fox, President 2000-2006.
Calderon and Fox PAN party types should be easy pickings for Republicans. They are 45% of voters. With smart campaigning Republicans should be able to pick up 20% of PRI voters. With smart campaigning Trump should be able to pick up 50% of Populist voters. Although Obrado is leftist, only half of his voters are. The voters are attracted to the charisma and Populism, not the ideology.
In a heavily Hispanic suburb I got 100% * of the Hispanic vote, mostly Mexican anchor babies/Dreamers and naturalized citizens but also Central American Contras, and a few from everywhere else. I left the area and my successor got 100% * of the Hispanic vote (plus 87% of the Black vote to my measly 30%).
*Except 1 Puerto Rican lady on welfare.
Cubans vote Republican, and Democrats hate Cubans. Cambodian Hmongs, ditto, I think. Now Indians? Well, they did used to cremate their wives along with themselves, only the wives were still living. So I guess that makes them sexists. And the Untouchables makes them racists. Homophobes? Dunno.
Now is Trump colluding with India?
I see no reason for Indian Americans to support Democrats.
Trump only got 14% of the Indian vote in 2016.
Like ALL legal immigrant groups, they vote overwhelmingly for democrats.
Don’t hold your breath wishing for something that is not going to happen.
If he gets 24% this time, will you consider that a success and worth the effort?
That’s a hypothetical question, and not really pertinent to the issue: mass immigration, legal & illegal, is making America into a leftist cesspool.
We are losing entire states to this wave: California, Virginia, Nevada, North Carolina, with Texas & Georgia starting to tip over...24% means that this cohort will still cast 3 out of every 4 votes for some leftist.
Here’s longwayhome’s rule of politics: all minority immigrants vote left, no matter how conservative their culture seems. We have over 50 years of proof of this.
Now is Trump colluding with India?
Thats November Collusion.

Even before Dems started identifying with the Pakistani line on Kashmir, there were a lot of silent Trump supporting but Democrat leaning Indians in the US. Now with all of the Dems trying to outdo the other in criticising the Indian move to integrate Kashmir, many more will silently cross the aisle in favour of Trump. At least this time.
