The Trump strategy: Dare the Democrats to win
The Hill ^ | September 22, 2019 | Keith Naughton

Nobody is going to win the 2020 presidential election — somebody will lose. In today’s polarized political world, voters are no longer voting for candidates they like; they are voting against candidates they dislike. President Trump’s reelection campaign is built on this dynamic. The 2020 election will be the most negative campaign in modern times, and the focus will be on the Democratic nominee.

The Trump campaign is not so much running to win; it is daring the Democrats to do what it takes to win. Trump is daring the Democrats to nominate a candidate acceptable to independent and swing voters. Trump is daring the Democrats to take palatable positions on the top issues for those independent and swing voters. It’s a shrewd strategy, placing the initiative on his opponents.

Can Trump win by not losing? He doesn’t have much choice.

By any historical measure, Trump’s polling numbers are not strong. With the exception of the postinaugural bounce all presidents get, Trump has never averaged a net favorable approval rating. Even his most favorable poll, Rasmussen, has rarely put Trump above water. Trump has never led former vice president Joe Biden in any hypothetical national ballot test. Trump has consistently lagged behind Biden in key swing states and must-win states such as Ohio and North Carolina. According to a poll from The Economist, a majority of the electorate doesn’t even want Trump to run for reelection (51 percent to 37 percent), with independents opposed 47 percent to 30 percent.

"In today’s polarized political world, voters are no longer voting for candidates they like; they are voting against candidates they dislike."

That's a simplistic statement which applies more to Democrats than Republicans. Trump supporters may not all like him personally, but they will vote for him because they see that he is doing a good job at what they voted him in for in the first place.

Only with Democrats is a national election a junior high school popularity contest, with all the tribalism, cattiness, and juvenile lack of reasoning that goes along with it.

I don’t trust polling at all these days

Most people I know don’t answer their phone at all unless they know the number that is calling.

So, polling services are getting a very small sampling of voters. Probably mostly the elderly.

Are the polls asking if “you like president Trump” ...or “are you going to vote g=fir president Trump?. We never hear the wording!

I did vote against Hillary last time. I thought Trump would backslide like so many other Republicans who have disappointed us. Glad I was wrong, definitely voting for him this time around! Too bad we will be stuck with Romney for the next 6 years. Maybe we will get lucky and he will choke on something. The Trump curse seems to be real for those who oppose him

That jack-ass statement just wreaks of elitist bile, straight out of the D.C. Echo Chamber.

That would describe the left wing voter.

I actively lie to political posters when they call. I suggest that everyone does that.

Maybe people are doing that in large numbers.

It could be why all the polls predicted Hillary in a landslide.

I never once thought that she would win.

NBC/Wall Street Journal poll out yesterday had 69% of voters HATE Trump and he would lose to any of the Dem. candidates. Seems like the memo out there to the media is to double down on fake poll numbers to depress Trump voters.

The Democrats have no candidates we have seen, like that.

I don’t think the Democrats are going with any of the clowns in the current debates. They have too much of a paper and media trail - they CAN’T dash back towards the center. They have all but written Trump’s campaign copy for him. All they can do is be “outraged” when Trump uses their own words against them.

I think the Democrats will come up with a Dark Horse candidate. He (he will be male) will be youngish, pretty, well-spoken or even eloquent and be somewhat obscure because he will not have much of a paper or media trail for President Trump to campaign against. The Media and the Judiciary will do its best to cover whatever trail there is.

Such a candidate would appeal to women (who will fantasize about him) and Low Information Voters who will pretend this candidate is whatever they want him to be.

If this sounds a bit like Obama, well, yes. Except that Obama won his primary.

The Democrats can’t win on ideas. They have to rely on voters who vote their ‘feelings.’

Thanks to cell phones, polls are no longer really reliable.
Just ‘cuz you have a 404 or 770 area code doesn’t mean you live in Georgia any more.

Trump is drawing 10,000 or more people every time he holds and event usually with thousands more than can't get in. It's proof he has a rabid base of supporters.

The author's claims apply only to the Democrats. Their ideas are awful and easily proven to be so and have been criticized even Bill Haher and Stephen Colbert. The only chance any of them have is to smear Trump or someone connected to him like Brett Kavanaugh.

Unlike the Democrats, who are as pure as the driven snow.

By any historical measure, the MSM has never chosen sides to this extent.
