HOUSTON — It wasn’t your typical Trump campaign rally.
Instead of red Make America Great Again hats, there were turbans and Islamic caps. Women in traditional Indian garb danced to bhangra drums. And tens of thousands of cheering Indian Americans chanted “USA!” and snapped photos.
President Donald Trump appeared at a cavernous football stadium on Sunday alongside Narendra Modi, the popular prime minister of India, who attracted a crowd of 50,000 from across the U.S. to what was touted as the largest event in the country for a leader of a foreign nation.
“You have never had a better friend as president than President Donald Trump,” Trump said as the crowd roared with approval. “We thank you. We love you. I want you to know my administration is fighting for you each and every day.”
Trump is hoping to appeal to Indian American voters, a growing political force in the U.S., with his business-friendly agenda — especially the 2017 tax cuts — as well as his tough talk on terrorism and his decision to show up at the rally even though the ethnic group has generally backed Democrats.
“It’s giving a message to the Indian community that Trump is a big friend of India,” said Rupesh Srivastava, a Michigan businessman and founding member of the Republican Hindu Coalition. “That message will definitely motivate people.”

It’s not just the better paying jobs 3rd worlders are taking. I work a low paying job, and a YUGE (majority) amount of my coworkers are foreigners. Nepalese, Indians, Somalis, Ethiopians, Middle Eastern, Asian, Middle Africa. These people are over here and there is no going back. I hear time and time again from Repubs espousing that they are only against illegal immigration. But our legal immigration is killing is, too. Millions upon millions. There is nothing controlled even with legal immigration unless you are a white Euro/South African. When will enough be enough? The answer is that there is no enough. The flood gates are open. America is just a free for all. And the anarchy won’t get better.
Is it better to be an employed socialist or an unemployed globalist.
I have a feeling the Democrats are going to rediscover their pro labor roots one day. If the Democrats start closing down legal immigration and support higher wages for all Americans they will be in charge for ever, basically. Right now is a really strange time in politics where the largest constancy in the USA the 120+ million American workers are all political orphans.
I hope so too.
Since neither Tech workers/Tech worker recent grads, nor US families have lobbyists wining and dining the Senators in DC, Trump really needs to hear us over all the DC noise.
Many countries protect their citizens’ jobs; we should be enforcing the safeguards that are supposedly in place and make sure H-1B Visa holders don’t replace US workers...
Tech jobs have been a huge boon to our middle class; if Trump is willing to protect steel workers’ jobs, why not protect tech workers jobs—also helps protect national security as well (there are many Chinese here on H-1B and Student visas).
Thing is, although more GOP have co-sponsored the SB 386 bill, I know it would be worse under a Democrat presidency. I am hoping Trump will support US workers...It is part of MAGA...
BTW: Here is another take on the issue which I think Trump and GOP Senators may find troublesome...I may post this if it has not been done already...
Don’t want to admit it, but I bought into Bernie’s lies during the Democrat race in 2016. He, like Trump, promised to end or reform the H1B program that absolutely decimated the American IT and STEM community.
So when Trump promised the same thing, I was all in. I seen how Indians absolutely dominate in technology in places like Singapore and the UAE.
Hell, even 10 years ago, I tried working in Chicago and southern Wisconsin in Programming/IT. Even back then it was Indian-dominated.
If he had it in bentonville arkansas the whole town would shut down.
What is racist about wanting to end H1B and send these unneeded and unwanted workers and their families home? What is racist about it American, Hire American?
This is all about North Carolina and Virginia, where there are a TON of Indians.
Kamala’s mother was Indian and her father was Jamaican with British citizenship, when she was born. Neither parent was a US citizen at her birth, so... she’s ineligible to be POTUS, VP or Speaker.
I don’t support H-1B visas, but I support legal immigration. I’m guessing you’re descended from immigrants.
Walmart is on my boycott list for it firing all American IT and Engineering staff and replacing them with H1B Indians.

I’ve been guilty of this, too...blaming immigrants. But it’s been mostly stupid-ass white people, all along the way, that have been the biggest part of America’s demise...and the rest of the Western world for that matter.
Saying to the other 193 countries of the world “fuck off” is definitely the wrong way to promote legal immigration. A merit-based system is great if it’s evenly applied. This is, by definition, not evenly applied.
This S.386 Bill will give India a virtual lock on all work-related green cards until 2036, in addition to maintaining the vast majority of H1B, H4EAD and OPT visa slots set aside for India.
Funny people on here whine about college students taking up “studies” or humanities degrees. They might actually be the smart ones. Why would any normal American student take up a challenging STEM degree, when they know that they will be saddled with a huge student debt and no job prospects when they graduate, as the jobs already were set aside for Indian H1Bs?
I could get another degree in no time without paying tuition. Too bad most people have no idea how to go about that.
The president could do a regular rally that big or bigger with a little more advanced preparation than is usual.
Support legal immigration is fine, but we are talking about millions of Indians here via H1B, taking American jobs, staying, bringing their families, and chain migration. Twenty-five years ago Indians were a rarity, IT jobs were filled by American graduates, now Indians are everywhere, bringing more in, and, guess what, no Americans getting those IT jobs. And it is all legal, supported by your friends Cruz and Lee, their financial backers, and the CofC. Americans, we lose.
Yes, end of day, whoever truly sides with and defends American workers will win. Selling out to H1B is a dead end. I hope Trump realizes this.
