President Donald Trump is expected to headline his largest rally yet on Sunday when he appears in Houston in an effort to appeal to a growing political force in the United States: Indian Americans.
Trump will speak to an expected crowd of 50,000, mostly Indian Americans, who are flocking to the most diverse city in the nation to catch a glimpse of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi at what is being touted as the largest event in the U.S. for a leader of foreign country.
He hopes to peel off some Indian American voters who could be attracted to his business friendly agenda, especially the 2017 tax cuts, his tough talk on terrorism and his decision to show up at the rally even though the ethnic group has generally backed Democrats.
“It’s giving a message to the Indian community that Trump is a big friend of India,” said Rupesh Srivastava, a Michigan businessman and founding member of the Republican Hindu Coalition. “That message will definitely motivate people.”
Republicans have been trying for years to make inroads with Indian Americans, one of the fastest growing ethnic groups in the United States, who register and vote at high rates.

President Trump should sign an Executive Order which grants Temporary U.S. citizenship to the 1.3 billion people in India. Their citizenship would last for 24 hours on Election Day 2020. Mail them all Absentee Ballots.
If the H-1B program does not get throttled soon President Trump will lose my vote.
Actually, if he signs the Indian jobs bull (bill) he will be, as it effectively bans everyone else from work-related green cards from the other 200 countries for over a decade - some estimates as long as 15 years. This includes Latin America, Africa, Europe and Japan.
And the Indian backlog will never clear due to the 80% of the H1Bs that Indians get.
It’s the Make America into India law.
... but most are Muslim and Hindu, by far. And just like Mexican chain migration, Indian chain migration tends to make America assimilate into Indian culture and values, not the other way around.
The Senate needs to stop the ridiculous H1B job bill.
There are a bunch of Indians in my town. We have one of the top public schools in the state and they've all moved here from Queens to take advantage of our very competitive schools.
Most of these Indians here that I know aren't Big Government leeches and would vote Republican.
