De Blasio says Bernie would have won in 2016

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio, who endorsed Hillary Clinton in 2016 and is challenging Bernie Sanders in the 2020 presidential race, now says he believes Sanders would have beaten Donald Trump.

"In my heart, yeah," the mayor said, when asked during a wide-ranging interview at POLITICO’s headquarters Monday if Sanders would have won the general election three years ago. "You know, hindsight’s 20/20, but I think when we look at it now, that was a moment where there was such desire for change," he added.

De Blasio's embrace of Sanders comes as the Vermont senator is one of the front-runners in a presidential race where de Blasio is struggling to gain traction. He is polling at zero to 1 percent and had about 6,700 individual donors as of the latest filing — far short of the 130,000 needed to qualify for the next Democratic debate. He declined to answer a question about whether he would remain in the race if he doesn't get into next month's debate.

Told that de Blasio now thinks Sanders would have won, Clinton campaign staffers’ reactions ranged from eye rolls to anger.

If Bernie had won over enough discontented voters to get the nomination, he would have taken some from Trump, so maybe Jeb or Ted would have gotten the Republican nomination and lost the general election to Bernie.

But it's all fantasy. Bernie couldn't beat Hillary. Her binders full of women guaranteed her the nomination, plus the old guard didn't want an outright socialist getting the nomination (they're all dead or napping now).

But if Bill loves Bernie, why's he running against him this time? I mean, DeBlasio is sort of running this time, isn't he?

Had it not been for the DNC efforts to defeat Bernie Sanders, it is a very good possibility he would have won and been the President right now.

Possibly. But what key constituencies that didn't turn out for Hillary would have turned out for Bernie?

The DNC convention when 1/3 empty when Bernie supports walked out. They also walked when it came to voting. They despised Hillary Clinton - still do.

Bernie would have fared much better than Hillary did in the Rust Belt states.
