Never has there been a presidential race as sprawling and wide-open as the 2020 Democratic primary. It would be a landscape entirely without a map, except that a small handful of battle-hardened veterans have navigated similar terrain before.
At the kickoff of the primary debate season four years ago, no fewer than 16 candidates were jockeying for position in the largest Republican presidential field in historyonly to end up being mowed down by Donald J. Trump in what became a slaughterhouse of a campaign.
Whats in store for this years Democrats? To get an insiders view, POLITICO Magazine invited four of the Republican strategists who managed those 2016 campaigns to a literal smoke-filled room in Washington to talk shop: Danny Diaz (Jeb Bush), Beth Hansen (John Kasich), Jeff Roe (Ted Cruz) and Terry Sullivan (Marco Rubio). Over drinks and cigars at the Civil Cigar Lounge, they unloaded about the difficulties of breaking through in a massive field, gossiped about the strengths and weaknesses of this Democratic crop, aired old grievances still lingering from 2016 and offered some tactical advice for how to face off against President Trump. The conversation below has been edited for length and clarity. Check out the audio in the newest edition of POLITICOs Off Message podcast.

yeah, just what i want to read about: opinions about winning Presidential elections from disgruntled loser campaign managers ...
No illegals vote!!!!
Why do we need advice from losers?
If a maximum intersectionality Democrat ticket emerges from their primary.
The loopiness and promises of free-everything will turn off enough people and Trump wins. Again.
...If the Chines=funded US media doresn’t drown out his message.
...If the Chines=funded US media doresn’t drown out his message.
Not that any of these former campaign managers could figure it out.
If enough republicans get off their duffs and vote to overcome democrat fraud.
He runs!
Houston....we have a problem.
“...if his name is on the ballot!”
“Republican Strategist” is just a Democrat ensuring the candidate loses, near as I can figure out, or makes sure he is weak and ineffectual at best, and manages the tripwires the deep state sets up for them to maximum effect.
...a majority of the electoral college delegates vote Donald Trump.
...if he runs.
All dems are total losers.
LOL
How about if the U.S. is still worthy of being saved.
Because if he loses a FAIR election, then there’s nothing left to build on...more than 50 percent would be lost to the msm and higher education.
I would like to see all Republicans and Conservatives not talk to any mainstream media outlet under any condition and on any topic.
The mainstream media is not our friend.
The sole purpose of any interview with the MSM is to get one soundbite to irreparably cripple the Republican. Every interview is a minefield of 'gotcha' journalism.
Especially don't do so over drinks where alcohol can loosen tongues.
I find it troubling this was done over drinks. These people should know better and know they're being set-up; even is the alleged topic is Democrats.
To answer the question.
Donald Trump ran on basically two platforms. Stopping illegal immigration and exposing and dismantling the deep state. (and the third, Make America Great Again).
Trump will win re-election if he can get our immigration system working properly again.
If he fails to show definitive progress by 2020 there are those in his base who will see him as just another politician who couldn't (or wouldn't) deliver on his campaign promise and they will sit-out the election. They will see him as nothing more than any other politician who would promise anything to get elected.
We all know there are single-issue voters; we read their comments here on many posted articles.
'That GD SOB screwed us! I'll never vote for him again!' How many times have you read that comment on countless threads?
The election is Trumps' to lose if he doesn't deliver. And Democrats are doing everything to make sure he doesn't. They're not going to help him solve the immigration crisis while they grandstand Trump is the one causing the crisis.
If Trump could expose the deep state before 2020, especially Democrat operatives, Democrats would be crushed.
...he continues to remain loyal to his base. The Republican party is more united than ever before. This is due to the President keeping his promises to the people who elected him. The fact that we no longer have to cater to the traitorous 3% of Republican Never-Trumpers has also greatly improved our cohesion. President Trump has delivered for us, and we will deliver for him.
