The best historical example demonstrating how our presidential election cycle has been extended to the point of absurdity is from March 31, 1968. In a nationally televised address about the Vietnam War, President Lyndon B. Johnson dropped a political bombshell by announcing, I shall not seek, and I will not accept, the nomination of my party for another term as your president."
LBJ was weary of the wars divisiveness and the toll it had taken on his presidency. Moreover, he was certain he would lose re-election because, according to Gallup (the gold standard of polling in 1968), his March job approval rating was around 41% with 52% disapproving.
By comparison, President Trumps current RealClearPolitics job approval polling average is 43% with a disapproval rating mirroring LBJs at 52.7%. Even if Trumps popularity dipped even lower, five decades later it would be unfathomable for an incumbent president to voluntarily withdraw seven months before Election Day.

I don’t think Trump would do it unless there was some electable person that could carry forward his priorities and someone that could stand up to the left wing.
“I wouldnt blame him if he did.”
Wow, you must be suggestible. Someone throws crap out there, and you think within its suggestion.
True...the tabloids will be chasing him forever
The rumors of Trump’s demise are highly exaggerated!
Myra Adams: Airhead idiot.
He has raised millions of dollars for reelection. I just don’t see this happening.
Whoa! That skeered me........LOL
Someone should tell this Myra broad that President Trump’s approval ratings are much higher than a mere “43%”.
President Trump not running for re-election is a liberal moonbat fantasy.
My thoughts exactly.
Thanks for posting that. Those little tidbits explain a whole lot. This old babe is a swamptser/RINO simply expressing her deepest fantasy.
“7 months before election day? The election is in Nov. 2020, so its 18 months away.”
The author of this silly speculation is suggesting President Trump might withdraw around a year from now with only 7 months until the election, like LBJ did.
That would be about the least likely scenario of all scenarios someone could speculate about.
When his first election was apparently hopeless, he kept running and fighting all of the way until the finish line. He would not drop out and give up even if his defeat was 100% certain, because quitting is against his philosophy of life.
If anything could make the president drop out it would have already happened.
Further, he is raising unprecedented amounts of money for his reelection and for other Republicans. He’s already running to win. He’s not quitting.
After wimping out on reelection in 1968, Loose Brains Johnson gave gun owners the finger that summer by signing GCA-68, giving us the ATF & FFL mess we suffer five decades later.
LBJ’s Texas-sized ego bellowed rage at the signing ceremony that the final bill did NOT include national gun registration and Federal licensing of owners.
Four years & some change later, LBJ croaked in a food & tobacco haze. Karma’s a bitch, but we live with his Great Society outrages to this day, such as the Kennedy-pushed immigration bill of 1965.
Kennedy the Swimmer died of a brain tumor in 2009. I have learned through reading that dying of a failing brain is the most ignominious of ends for the power-drunk. As in shaking a fist at the ceiling and calling out God for His disobedience to one’s desire to go on owning the lives of others.
I haven’t seen Trump holding dogs by their ears, nor is there any rumour that he had the previous president killed.
Also he hasn’t started any costly and unwinnable foreign wars.
So thanks for the analogy, seems to have almost no merit but what the hey, talk is cheap.
I’d the Dems had left him alone, I would have said that he would have. I mean who needs this crap of D.C. BUt the problem is Trump lives to get even, and it will take him years to do at the rate he threatens and lets it sit there.
LBJ withdrew because he knew he was going to lose.
Didnt read the article, but yeah, this presidenting for him, hes so hated, so maligned; this could get really old. He sacrificed 4 years for us. Hes an aging billionaire. No other billionaire has sacrificed so much for an America who barely appreciates it. Why should he do 8 years? He might prefer to get back into private life and spare his family all the tzouris.
At least he knew he’d have to fight to get the nomination, and he didn’t want a tough campaign. Gene McCarthy had nearly beaten him in New Hampshire.
He was going to be renominated on his birthday.
RFK probably wouldn’t have entered the race, and not been assassinated.
Dear Myra:
The hot chicks of the 1980’s called, they want their hair back/
After his next election win he should say that he just realized that he is a woman, Donalda Trump, and win eight more years.
The RATS support that kind of thing, what could they do?
New Hampshire Primary was March 12.
RFK entered the race March 16.
LBJ withdrew March 31.
