Could Trump Drop a Withdrawal Bombshell a la LBJ in '68?
RealClearPolitics ^ | May 1, 2019 | Myra Adams

The best historical example demonstrating how our presidential election cycle has been extended to the point of absurdity is from March 31, 1968. In a nationally televised address about the Vietnam War, President Lyndon B. Johnson dropped a political bombshell by announcing, “I shall not seek, and I will not accept, the nomination of my party for another term as your president."

LBJ was weary of the war’s divisiveness and the toll it had taken on his presidency. Moreover, he was certain he would lose re-election because, according to Gallup (the gold standard of polling in 1968), his March job approval rating was around 41% with 52% disapproving.

By comparison, President Trump’s current RealClearPolitics job approval polling average is 43% with a disapproval rating mirroring LBJ’s at 52.7%. Even if Trump’s popularity dipped even lower, five decades later it would be unfathomable for an incumbent president to voluntarily withdraw seven months before Election Day.

By late 1968 Johnson was disheartened by his failure to defeat the North Vietnamese following the Tet offensive. Media icons like Walter Cronkite began to side with the anti-war activists and question for the first time the ability of this country to win the war. But the real decider was when he barely won the New Hampshire primary against Eugene McCarthy who was a strong anti-war advocate. At that point he decided he was damaged goods and needed to step aside so Humphrey could wind down the war without distraction. If Romney or Weld or some other Republican can come close to beating him in an early primary he might re-evaluate his options. There will be huge amounts of money spent to target him. His only hope is support from a loyal base standing with him against the swamp tide.

This it totally believable because we all know how much liberals love and respect Mike Pence. If he ran in place of Trump there is no doubt all the divisiveness would end. /S

Dear entropy12 and edie1960:

With your esteemed endorsements of my suggestion in hand, shall I send it to the White House? (And when Dems reject the idea of fixing the system and delaying the elections we can ask them, “Then what was the Mueller investigations about?”)

I can see it happening.

Trump probably is tired of the nonsense, he probably wants to go back to NYC/Mar-a-lago.

Politics is a game of scoundrels, Trump knows it. He probably would to show the nation “I told you politicians were nothing but a bunch of hacks”.

DeSantis, Pence, Cotton probably can’t beat Bernie

LBJ was more worried about his nut sack being pinched if the tailor screwed up the seam in his pants.

What nonsense. These people are insane.

Trump hasn’t lost 1 bit of support and all polls showing internals show his support is actually higher than it was in 16, but he’s going to lose? Be serious.

LBJ’s health was poor and there was great concern that he would not live long enough to complete his second term. Hence him not seeking a second term.

He died January 22 1973 which would have been the day after he left office.

Dem fan fiction

Trump will never win the Republican nomination.

Trump will never win the general election.

Trump will be forced to resign before the midterm elections.

Trump will be forced to resign before the 2020 election.

Trump will be impeached before the 2020 election.

Trump will not run for re-election in 2020.

Trump will withdraw his re-election bid before the 2020 election.

Trump will never be re-elected ...

Oh hell, you say the nicest things. And I get your point. He runs away when they hate him, he shouldn’t have ever run at all. When I say I wouldn’t blame him. I just mean I wouldn’t blame him. But if course, I’d really hold it against him.

So you’re right....dammit
