Trump's best 2020 move: Dump Mike Pence for Nikki Haley
CNN Opinion ^ | April 26, 2019 | Arick Wierson

President Trump's recent stonewalling tactics, aimed at blocking Congress' ability to follow up on the allegations detailed in the Mueller report, are rooted in the belief that he can run out the clock on the Democrats in the House through the 2020 election. Nonetheless, it's a strategy fraught with peril, and if the President begins to see a significant erosion in his approval numbers from Americans tired of the endless standoff, he might need to reach deep into his bag of tricks to reset the national narrative.

There is one move that could prove to be a complete game changer: naming Nikki Haley, the former UN ambassador and South Carolina governor, as his running mate in 2020. News of a Trump-Haley ticket would be a master stroke that would upend the 2020 election and could send Democrats into a complete tailspin.

Bucking tradition for the heck of it is a hallmark of this presidency, but if Trump were to part ways with Mike Pence it would be nothing more than raw political calculus: in one move, Trump would make history by selecting a woman of color with a deep political resumé and foreign policy gravitas -- making it the most diverse ticket in the history of the GOP.

Adding Haley to the ticket would not only strengthen his position in key defensive battleground states, but possibly put several states that Hillary Clinton carried in 2016 back in play for the GOP. By tapping Haley as his running mate, the President could deliver the ultimate coup de grâce to Democrats' hopes of retaking the White House in 2020.

Nikki Haley gave the Republican Party's response to President Barack Obama's final State of the Union address on Tuesday, and her speech included implied criticism of Donald Trump. "During anxious times, it can be tempting to follow the siren call of the angriest voices," Haley said. "We must resist that temptation. No one who is willing to work hard, abide by our laws and love our traditions should ever feel unwelcome in this country." In an interview with NBC's "Today" on Wednesday, Haley specified that Trump, the current front-runner for the Republican presidential nomination, was one of the "angriest voices" that she condemned.

Nicki Haley isn’t even a natural born citizen. Why should anybody consider her a possible vice president?

Not only that, she is NOT a conservative and she has no understanding of our history. She even removed a confederate flag from her state’s capital.

With so little understanding of State’s Rights - why would anybody consider her for that position.

Nope all indications are the battleground will be in the Midwest. Pence is from Indiana, Buttgig is from Indiana. Nikki Haley adds nothing to the ticket that isn’t already there.

This analysis is just plain stupid. Trump holds all the cards. He can declassify anything. He KNOWS the truth of the matter. He has known all this since shortly after the inauguration. The only decisions he has to make are WHEN to release information on his coup plotters and in what order. CNN & MSNBC would do well to keep those things in mind as they dig deeper into their attempts to keep the Conspiracy alive. Heads will eventually roll in both organizations.

Nobody's perfect I guess.

Hamlin was in the Maine state militia. When his unit was called up in 1864, he was told he didn't have to serve, but he joined them. He didn't see action, but he did do guard duty, acted as company cook, and was mustered out as corporal when unit returned to Maine -- all while serving as Vice President.

Different times.

Unfortunately the RNC wants it this way. They have been grooming her for this for a while now. Resigning from the UN at the time she did was a calculated move.

Turning her back on South Carolina and the South in general won her major kudos from the RNC and major media as well.

If this comes to pass I hope they know what they’re doing because she is radioactive in the South. And I can vouch for the fact that a lot of conservative Yankees hate her guts as well.

Chose carefully, Mr. President.

We’re supposed to be getting rid of the deep state, not giving it more power.

I still remember Nikki drooling over the prospect of Little Marco becoming President.

No effing thanks.

anyone born on U.S. soil and subject to its jurisdiction is a natural born citizen, regardless of parental citizenship.

______________

Oddly enough, this was the same exact advice given by Steve Pieczenik today.

I was not impressed with this as his idea, either.
