Trump's best 2020 move: Dump Mike Pence for Nikki Haley
CNN Opinion ^ | April 26, 2019 | Arick Wierson

President Trump's recent stonewalling tactics, aimed at blocking Congress' ability to follow up on the allegations detailed in the Mueller report, are rooted in the belief that he can run out the clock on the Democrats in the House through the 2020 election. Nonetheless, it's a strategy fraught with peril, and if the President begins to see a significant erosion in his approval numbers from Americans tired of the endless standoff, he might need to reach deep into his bag of tricks to reset the national narrative.

There is one move that could prove to be a complete game changer: naming Nikki Haley, the former UN ambassador and South Carolina governor, as his running mate in 2020. News of a Trump-Haley ticket would be a master stroke that would upend the 2020 election and could send Democrats into a complete tailspin.

Bucking tradition for the heck of it is a hallmark of this presidency, but if Trump were to part ways with Mike Pence it would be nothing more than raw political calculus: in one move, Trump would make history by selecting a woman of color with a deep political resumé and foreign policy gravitas -- making it the most diverse ticket in the history of the GOP.

Adding Haley to the ticket would not only strengthen his position in key defensive battleground states, but possibly put several states that Hillary Clinton carried in 2016 back in play for the GOP. By tapping Haley as his running mate, the President could deliver the ultimate coup de grâce to Democrats' hopes of retaking the White House in 2020.

“I think Haley is Trump’s preferred candidate to replace him in 2024....”

Why would you think that?

I believe you and I believe you mean well. But the definition of “natural born citizen is not settled. The democrats will hammer Nicki Halley mercifully on her citizenship qualifications. They will go full birther. It will be enough to make plenty of republicans sit out the elections.

Trust me on this. I was a supporter of Ted Cruz before I switched to Trump back in the Primaries back in 2016. The only thing democrats talked about was Cruz Cuban father. It was no fun. Having been a freeper back in 2009 when everyone including me at FR spent much of a year researching and debating Obama’s citizenship qualifications—I felt very jaded by having to argue for Cruz.

What the democrats will do to Nikki Halley will be just terrible. I may well seem unfair to you. But it will be effective. in suppressing the republican vote.

Not my interpretation at all. But no matter, you’ll
believe whatever you like, regardless.
.....
Its not about me. Its about that the democrats will go full birther on Nikki Halley. And they will succeed in stripping out a percent of the republican vote.

Exactly, and he asked Pence in such a low key, off hand way that it was clear that POTUS has no interest in replacing Pence. They work well together.

No, she’s dumb as a box of rocks, only does what Karl Rove and Ronna Romney tell her to do, and she trashed Trump after a State of the Union Speech.

I suggest you get a clue sister.

No, dump Mike Pence for Mike Pompeo. He’s a Trump like figure IMO, and would be a better fit to run for Pres in 2024.

Pence is just too mild mannered and has very little fire in the belly.

I tend to agree with you. This country does not need a female as president. Ever! Take a look at the long list of female losers already screwing up our government. None are tough enough to be president.

Nicky Haley is not eligible. She is not NBC.
....................................
NH strikes me as a person who would not hesitate to turn on Trump if she thought it would advance her personal agenda. Instead of her, I was thinking that he might secure the necessary female support by naming Judge Jeanine or Sidney Powell as his running mate. On the other hand, dropping Pence might alienate his supporters in the Midwest, especially in Indiana.

You need to do some research on the Constitution.

making it the most diverse ticket in the history of the GOP.

Not true, they ran a Democrat man with a Republican woman once, that's pretty diverse.

Born in the USA does not make a NBC all alone. Both parents must be CITIZENS + Born in the USA. IOW, the person must not be subject to divided loyalties. An NBC is a person who can be nothing but an American.

Absolute nonsense. People will vote for the ticket because of Trump and not because of Haley.

You are showing your lack of education with regard to the Constitution. BOTH parents must be citizens of the US.

Oh believe me I have. I said Ted Cruz is ineligible, as well as, Nikki Haley & Marco Rubio. Some people just do not want to hear it.
