The government shutdown has not been good to President Trump. Polls consistently show that clear majorities of the public put the blame on him. His approval rating has fallen since it began, with a new Post/ABC News poll finding it at 37 percent, with 53 percent blaming Trump and Republicans for the shutdown.
Meanwhile, Trump and his administration seem determined to show that they don’t care about the fortunes of regular people, which isn’t helping.
Nothing is permanent, of course. Trump’s fortunes could revive as all Americans come to realize just how fabulous a president he really is. But if that fails to happen, and his approval ratings remain low, don’t be surprised if he gets a primary challenge for his reelection.
It has always seemed like the remotest of possibilities, given Trump's apparent hold on his party, and it still may be less than likely. But for this most unusual president, circumstances may combine to bring it about.
It’s one of the truisms of contemporary presidential politics that a president who gets a primary challenge winds up losing. It’s what happened to George H.W. Bush in 1992 (who was challenged by Pat Buchanan), to Jimmy Carter in 1980 (Ted Kennedy), and to Gerald Ford in 1976 (Ronald Reagan). What’s much less clear is whether the primary challenge is effect or cause: whether it’s that the challenge exposes the president to high-profile criticism and divides his party, or if only weak presidents on the road to defeat get challenged in the first place.

The only threat to Trump would not be by a moderate.
Those two Trump and everyone could sit back, laugh at, and ignore. I suspect there are more credible Republicans, GOPe and Never Trumper’s, that might try it. I’m not ready to venture any guesses. I do think they’d likely doom us to a Democratic victory.

It would have to be a moderate that was slightly left of center I would think. Someone who would syphon off enough votes from the Dems to make them viable in states that Dems usually carry (NH, NJ, PA, MN, MI)
Then I think it would only work if the Dem candidate were so horrific that enough Dems switch to the moderate. This is, as someone said, borderline fiction.
The reason is simple. I think the Dems and their base will be VERY fired up to beat Trump in 2020. They hate him as much or more than we hated Hillary. It will take an enormous amount of GOP turnout for him to win in that regard.
Historically, the only viable primary challengers come from the party base, i.e. liberal for the Dems and conservative for GOPers. Kennedy v. Carter. Reagan v. Ford. Remember Anderson v. Reagan? Nobody else does, either.
Jeff Flake, bwah hah hah! He had a NINE PERCENT approval rating in Arizona when we kicked his @ss out of his Senate office.

I absolutely hate both of those options -but I also believe he will have a primary challenge - likely from multiple characters.
His bowing before Nancy on the SOTU was a sign. But his capitulation to Nancy and Schumer today on reopening the government without a single penny for the Wall.
And then he went on to further water down the Wall (that’s already been downgraded to “some kind of barrier” - now down to what has already been tried and generally failed - limited fencing...
Trump’s presidency is going to be a one-term affair (IF the Dems don’t impeach him with the help of those turncoats in the Senate).
Is this what I want? absolutely not. But Trump has tucked tail - something absolutely contrary to his character. He has given up and turned over border security to the party that wants to eliminate all border enforcement and to abolish ICE.
Bush League Republicans fully intend to complete the GHW Bush Plan for North Mexico (aka USA).
Somebody will run 3rd Party. Kasich, Flake, whoever.
No reason for them to be a primary season doormat that POTUS wipes his feet on and helps gets out the MAGA vote.
