Carter also said an additional statement Trump issued under fire is still not as enthusiastic as it should be.
Jimmy Carter remains unimpressed with President Donald Trumps belated effort to take note of and honor the late Sen. John McCains service to the U.S.
In fact, the 93-year-old former president characterized it as at best adequate.
Carter spoke with MSNBCs Andrea Mitchell on Tuesday about Trumps responses after McCain ― who endured torture as a POW during the Vietnam war, served more than 45 years in Congress and was the 2008 GOP presidential nominee ― died at his home in Arizona on Saturday.
I think it was a very serious mistake Trump made, and his friends and opponents corrected him, I think, quite adequately, Carter said.
Trump in an initial tweet offered his deepest sympathies and respect to McCains family, but offered no praise for his fellow Republican, with whom he had a contentious relationship. According to The Washington Post, on Sunday Trump rejected the release of an official White House statement that would have celebrated the 81-year-old McCain as a hero,
Bipartisan criticism of Trumps seeming pettiness intensified after flags at the White House returned to full staff on Monday, less than two days after McCain had died. How much more muted would this lovefest be if McCain hadn’t been so unsupportive of the President. Would he still be up for canonization?
Wait till the funeral. Closet leftists havent had this kind of an opportunity since the Paul Wellstone Memorial Pep Rally. Patriots will be outnumbered by closet liberals 10:1.
Jimmy doesn’t know what day of the week it is.
Declining to excessively praise McCain is now apparently a crime worse than the holocaust.
Amen.
He was a POW. He endured torture. He gets respect for that. Everything else? Uhhh, no.
Again...go away.
I’ll believe that when it doesn’t happen.
If there’s one thing Mister Peanut recognizes on sight it’s a mistake, on account of he’s had so much experience surveilling the damage from his own.
Carter’s fawning obituaries are already in the can.
The saccharine obsequies will be unlimited and ankle deep.
And the same RATs now falling all over themselves to praise what a "statesman" McCain was were the same RATs who said McCain would be "Bush's third term" and is a "crazy old man who wants to start a war with Iran" when he ran against their savior Obama.
