Poll Finds 70 Percent of Republicans Approve of Trump’s Handling of Russia, Even After Helsinki
Slate ^ | July 17, 2018 | Elliot Hannon

A new tracking poll from Reuters/ Ipsos Tuesday showed that rank-and-file Republicans not only continue to support President Trump, but refuse to believe he’s doing anything wrong. The most galling number from the survey is: 71 percent of Republicans approve of Trump’s handling of Russia. That support runs counter to much of the leadership of their own party, at minimum during the Helsinki summit. The poll was put into the field following the summit, so it should pick up any quiver of movement, but there still has not been a dip in GOP support for Trump’s Putin-loving approach.

Overall, more than half of those polled (55 percent) disapproved of Trump’s handling of Russia and agree (59 percent) with U.S. intelligence findings about Russian attempts to tamper with the 2016 election. But, also worrying, is the fact that only 32 percent of Republicans believe that Russia attempted to intervene in the election. Not that Russia had a preference for or collaborated with the Trump campaign; just that it attempted to interfere. The Democratic figures, predictably, are more or less the inverse of the GOP numbers. But the Republican support is pretty astonishing given the response to Trump’s soft touch with Putin. It drew rebukes from all corners, including Republican lawmakers, Fox News hosts, and even Trump allies, like Newt Gingrich. But it still hasn’t moved the needle, according to the Reuters poll....

Everything being said about the Trump-Putin summit was said about the 1986 Reagan Gorbachev summit in Reykjavik.

Yep, folks on the Left and the Right lost their minds, over it.

The poll numbers aren’t good for the Dims on Russia, Russia, Russia so next week the media will be on to the next phony Trump outrage/scandal.

The MSM hasn’t figured out yet that we’re just not listening to them anymore. They can jump up and down and scream until they’re blue in the face....like they do pretty much every day. We just don’t care. We’ve long since tuned them out.

Did Russia meddle? Almost certainly. So what? Its not like they’re the only ones and its not like we haven’t been meddling in other countries’ elections and its not like it made a difference. We know why we voted against Hillary. We didn’t need any foreigners to provide us a reason.

I honestly don’t see what all this Russian hysteria is about. Do liberals really believe the fake looking tantrums they come up with every week in hopes of “this time” getting the evil Trump?

The "offending" remark made by President Trump was nothing more than what he has been saying for the last thirty years;

We are in the social, political and economic mess we are in because we have made stupid deals by stupid people and he told us those deals would be negated or re negotiated.

Listen again to his comment.

THAT was what he said.

I am envious of President Trump for admitting her erred.
No other leader of any country would have a backbone to admit they were wrong.
We need a GREAT Leader like him here in Australia.
No the spineless wimp Turnbull.
Please give us a leader that can reopen our coal fired
Power Stations.

Meanwhile, Reuters’ headline is “Majority of Americans think Trump mishandling Russia”. The margin they claim is “more than half”. But in the second paragraph they say this:
However, Trump’s performance at the Helsinki summit, where Trump refused to blame the Russian leader for meddling in the 2016 U.S. election and cast doubt on the findings of U.S. intelligence agencies, did not seem to have an impact on his overall approval rating.
Given their underreporting of the real approval rating, this must be making them sweat.

70% support from Republicans won’t win many contested elections this Nov.

I didn't see the problem with his meeting and comments about Russia. They are our natural allies and we need to stop treating them as Soviets 2.0. Too many anti-Russian neocons, both Democrats and Republicans, that mix party politics in to undermine our relations with Russia.

Not suggesting giving them a pass, but we need to engage them, not stir up war fever.

With every single ‘silver-bullet’ used in the two year period...if there is zero gain, and perhaps a three-seat shift of Senate seats to the GOP...then it’s hard to envision any campaign in 2020 working. You could go and take a young Obama-type and try to run a campaign, but it’s basically doomed.

They are also listening to Dilbert! unlike all DNC, CIA, FBI, NSA, MSM and even the GOP. Listen to recent blogs, and form your own opinion thereof.

It’s a silly question. Nobody thinks the Russians are a big threat, given their diminished capacity. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak. Whereas China’s economy is 10x Russia’s, and it’s spending more on its military than we are, if you account for salary differences.

And the Democrats don’t actually want to be more assertive vis-a-vis Russia - they just want to virtue-signal. It was Trump, not Obama, who sent Javelin anti-tank missiles to Ukraine. Trump says nice things about the Russians, while doing things to keep them getting over. Whereas Obama talked tough, while letting them walk all over us.

Most of which just parrot what they see the media shrieking on their TVs on any given day.

I find it hilarious that these are the best numbers they could pull even in the midst of the mainstream media's hysterics. I mean 55% disapproval, whereas in the media's it's like universal condemnation. It shows how little credibility they have now.

Makes you wonder what they would be with a non-partisan press.

What, exactly, are they polling regarding his “handling” of Russia? Does anyone have specifics of the meeting, potential deals, or ANYTHING that was discussed?

So, apparently they are polling to see if their hysterical coverage has had the desired results on his poll numbers.

another swing and a miss....the media is so in a bubble...everybody can see what they’re trying to do, and have been doing since he won. Most are just tuning it all out....
