The leader of the New York arm of the Black Lives Matter movement is calling out New York gubernatorial candidate and actress/activist Cynthia Nixon for her comments on legalizing marijuana over the weekend, in which she said that the industry could provide a form of “reparations” for communities of color.
While he supports cannabis legalization, Black Lives Matter of Greater New York president Hawk Newsome told the Times Union on Monday that candidates for office should not use words like “reparations” lightly, a topic on which there is a growing body of serious scholarship.
“Cynthia Nixon’s comments that the legalization of marijuana would serve as ‘reparations’ for the African-American community are offensive and ignorant,” Newsome said in a statement.
When asked to explain his objection, Newsome told the Times Union, “There are groups across the world still fighting for reparations, this has been before the [United Nations]. It is not a word we can manipulate the meaning of. You can’t appropriate the word unless you are talking about it in a very specific way.”
Nixon has made legalization marijuana central to her campaign, calling it a “racial justice” issue and citing studies that show that people of color are disproportionately targeted by police for possession of marijuana despite similar usage rates by whites....

I would support paying reparations to anyone who was actually a slave. Many of the so called civil rights leaders today forget that white people in this Republic have laid out billions of $$$ to help lift minorities out of poverty. All we hear now is racists racists racists.

The Democrat coalition of ‘Victim Groups’ is finally running headlong into others on the list. Perhaps Schumer should come out with a list called ‘The Hierarchy of Victim Status’, so each group can determine if their issue is considered more important than that of a Victim Group above them in the hierarchy? I am getting confused. Is there a difference between ‘Cultural Appropriation’ and ‘Other Victim Group Advocacy’? If there is, maybe Cynthia Nixon should be accused of Cultural Appropriation?
