Should Democrats Trade DACA for Border Wall Funding?
Mother Jones ^ | September 4, 2017 | Kevin Drum

Posted on 09/04/2017 9:45:06 PM PDT by 2ndDivisionVet

DACA, the “mini-DREAM Act” enacted by executive order under President Obama, is about to be killed by President Trump. Politico reports:

President Donald Trump has decided to end the Obama-era program that grants work permits to undocumented immigrants who arrived in the country as children, according to two sources familiar with his thinking. Senior White House aides huddled Sunday afternoon to discuss the rollout of a decision likely to ignite a political firestorm — and fulfill one of the president’s core campaign promises.

The administration’s deliberations on the issue have been fluid and fast moving, and the president has faced strong warnings from members of his own party not to scrap the program….In a nod to reservations held by many lawmakers, the White House plans to delay the enforcement of the president’s decision for six months, giving Congress a window to act, according to one White House official.

A lot of liberals are describing this as “hostage taking,” but I’m not sure that’s fair. That term is approporiate for things like threatening not to raise the debt ceiling, which would cause havoc, but not for fairly ordinary legislative maneuvering. It looks like Trump is doing two things here. First, he wants to put some of the responsibility for DACA back on Congress. If they fail to save it, then he can say it wasn’t a unilateral action on his part. Congress agreed by declining to pass its own bill.

Second, he’s probably using this as a bargaining chip. Most likely, he’ll make it clear that he won’t veto a budget bill that includes DACA if Congress appropriates money for his border wall. This is a fairly ordinary sort of thing for a president to do. FDR would be entirely unsurprised by horsetrading like this.

So what should Democrats do if this is how things go? I’d say: take the deal.¹ A couple of billion dollars for a border wall is galling, but it isn’t really all that damaging. Conversely, a truly permanent DACA would be a boon for nearly a million young immigrants. Nobody likes being forced to trade votes like this, but this is the way politics works. If this deal is really available, Democrats should signal that they’re interested.

¹That’s assuming it’s a simple swap of DACA for border wall money. In real life, it will end up being much more complex.

I thought President Trump was finished, kaput, on-his-way-out, being shown the door a couple of days ago. What happened?

He's literally too smart for them to handle.

"Art Of The Deal" leverage, take out the lumps...get that wall built!

NO DACA, YES WALL

It’s not the democrats decision to make. They lost the election in every way possible, and as one recent president said, I won so you need to sit in the back and be quiet.

I’m vehemently opposed to dreamer amnesty, but am OK with a deal: dreamer amnesty for a wall. Not the funds for a wall, or the promise of a wall. A wall, being built , with complete funding.

I'm surprised to find myself agreeing with anything in Mother Jones, but I believe I'd take that deal too. Building the wall has to be the first priority - it will prevent any more from coming in illegally. As for the people covered by DACA - the reality is that there are a million or more, and they will never be deported. As long as the firehose is turned off and the flood of illegal aliens is ended by a border wall, we can try to assimilate the ones already here.

Yes, and this is in line with Trump’s campaign statement that a way would be found for some of the “good” immigrants to gain the ability to stay. They don’t have to get more than the same rights as other residents. But they have to show that they have a record of good citizenship, hard work, respect for the law and respect for the education system.

Good for you Mr. Trump, you found a way to get them on the record.

Yeah, Trump would be stupid enough to trade a Ty Cobb baseball card for Colin Kaepernick football card.

We don't have both Houses. We have Republicans who want DACA and illegals just as bad as the Dems.

If Trump kicks it back to Congress, I guarantee you these K-street butt buddy losers will scrounge up enough votes in a New York minute and try to send a DACA bill to Trump before they send him a Hurricane Harvey aid package. Just goes to show you what scum some Republicans are.

Yeah but here's the thing. I would take the deal too - but the wall, the end to sanctuary cities and states, end to anchor babies, more funding for the Border Patrol and ICE, end the 1965 immigration act, and no chain migration HAS TO COME FIRST. Otherwise, Trump will get screwed like Reagan did in 1986.

This is a huge bargaining chip that Trump has though.

Or draft all the healthy 18 year old men in this country that we think we’d need, put them in uniforms, give them 18 weeks of combined basic training/advanced individual training and riot control instruction and send them out to round-up all illegals, whether DACA or not. I’m guessing the cost would be less than $50 billion dollars. That’s what Ike did.

How about we build a wall AND retract DACA, with no negotiation instead?

Winning!!!

Short sighted analysis. 1 million voters now will turn into 10s of millions of voters in 4 years with chain migration and ‘birthright’ citizenship. And they will all be Democrat snowflakes.

Obama is out. Let’s keep him and his korporate kleptocracy at bay; better yet, arrest him for sedition.
