Incoming Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., said he wants President-elect Trump to select a "mainstream" candidate to fill the Supreme Court vacancy created by the death of Justice Antonin Scalia.
Asked by NBC on Sunday whether he was comfortable filibustering any Trump nominee for the court, Schumer dodged answering the question directly.
"I hope that President Trump picks a mainstream candidate," Schumer said. "A mainstream candidate is somebody you may not agree with on every issue, but basically believes in precedent."
NBC's Chuck Todd interrupted Schumer and asked, "What does that mean? Can he nominate somebody in your mind that is, say, [Texas Sen.] Ted Cruz? Is he too conservative for you?"
"I'm not going to get into specific candidates, but we'd hope it would be mainstream," Schumer answered. "If it is mainstream, you have to remember, the last four nominees, two from President Bush, two from President Obama, got bipartisan support on the bench. If he doesn't nominate a mainstream candidate, we're going to go at him with everything we have, or her. Go at the candidate with everything we've got because this is so, so important."
Schumer expressed a willingness to work with Trump on issues where the president-elect and Democratic Party agree in a series of Sunday morning interviews. Trump responded by praising Schumer on Twitter.
Wanting and getting are two different things.
...whether he was comfortable filibustering any Trump nominee for the court, Schumer dodged answering the question directly.
He's worried he can't get 41 votes?
Shut up Chuck. Nobody cares what you want, anymore.
Schumer is stunningly stupid! Or must think the rest of us are.
The political climate of the last 8 years guarantees that NO 'MAINSTREAM' CANDIDATE exists.
The Democrats created the problem and the new elected powers that be need to sort things out before agreeing to ANYTHING THE DIMS PROPOSE.
He guaranteed that he would choose from the list he put out. It was not “the types of people”, rather I thought he said he would choose from the list. Thus, the people voted knowing the potential nominees. It is not as if this is a big unknown.
**cough, cough, spit**
Like Obama and Clinton did, Chuckie?
We have Trump’s list, vetted by the Federalist society. That is pretty main-stream in my book.
What’s George Marlin doing these days?
>> The vote on Alito was 58-42 as I recall. <<
Not only that, but I’d bet the only four Dems who supported him did so after it was clear they couldn’t get 50 votes to block him. None of those four Dems are still in the senate.
Only the failures from Harvard law school are destined to practice law. The great successes move on to other realms, Senators, judges, legal scholars, where they are free to invent alternative systems of law, unconstrained by the US constitution and the common law context that give it meaning, and the citizens justice.
We might want to remind ManbITCH MCCONNELL to disallow the filibuster in the upcoming 2017 senate session. Harry started it and now the dems can eat it.
Chuckie’s idea of mainstream is a Republican caught between a dog and a lamp post
So when a lib justice dies, they claim the Pubster POTUS should replace them with a lib to maintain the balance. Is Upchuck forgetting that rule?
To Schumer, mainstream would be slightly to the left of Fidel Castro...
When did Schumer suggest Obama pick a scotus candidate conservatives would like?
Yes, they did not have to go as far as SCOTUS for the nuclear option under Reid. The Dems are not going to cooperate in voting for any justice who is pro-life
Is that what O-Vomit did with Kagan and Sotomayor?
Go somewhere and sit your liberal ass down, Chuckles. Elections have consequences and we won. You get your one vote for every justice President Trump nominates. That’s it. Deal with it.
Does mainstream mean acceptable to the mainstream media? He is ringing that bell, and wants the press to have veto power over Trump’s pick.
I’m sure Trump will thank Schumer for his input, pat him on the head, and send him away.
