The latest October surprise: Trump pivots and saves his candidacy at second debate
Fox News Opinion ^ | October 9, 2016 | Douglas E. Schoen, Democratic pollster

Facing tremendous pressure to appear contrite and offer a genuine apology for his comments about taking advantage of women some 11 years ago, Donald Trump did something better: he pivoted.

The debate focused on the #TrumpTapes for barely a few minutes and it wasn’t the fault of the moderators or Hillary Clinton. Trump just moved past the apology faster than anyone expected, straight into his attacks on Bill Clinton – which we knew were coming based on the past few days and the pre-debate press conference he held with women who have accused Bill Clinton of sexual assault – to the meat of this election: change versus status quo.

Trump emphasized over and over again that Clinton has spent the last 30 years in public service and has little to show for it. He went at her foreign policy record and cited failures in Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya, Syria and Iran. After missing opportunities to hit Clinton on her emails and Benghazi, he didn’t let that happen again, bringing up both several times....

His candidacy was never at risk.

Just because the media is pushing a premise does not mean the premise is valid.

What is at risk is the survival of the stinking, treacherous GOP.

Will they kill themselves on the walls of Fort Trump like many of the other 16 candidates did? I think they already have.

He did great... the only thing that I don’t think he hit on hard enough was the Clinton Foundation connection (unless I missed it... there was a ball game going on that demanded some attention too).

I guarantee no one working for her wanted to be anywhere near her tonight. She’s throwing stuff all over the place. If she can stay awake. In fact, the good doctor feel good may have had to give her a knock out shot.

Lying perfectly supine in Fort Marcy Park. Little blood loss. Laid out as though for burial with a revolver stuck reversed in the hand with the thumb in the trigger guard.

Tonight was very subtle yet powerful. I think it showed Trump was ready to rise above this stupid trivia, and the good thing is that he un-derailed his campaign and he also served notice that the next third-grade dirtbomb attack may be something the HRC just may not want to puke out so gleefully. It showed strength versus talking points. I think the HRC campaign was surprised he was not more derailed.

The lightweight GOPe dragged-to-the-party reluctant Trump endorsers can eat dog turds. They showed their colors better than Trump *OR* HRC. Useless, spineless cowards, proudly led by Ryan, McCain, and Graham, they have the collective spine of the material residing my large intestine.

Exactly. And what’s more, Trump warned them back at the start of the campaign that they had better not play that card.

BOOM!!!!

Yes, Pat Caddell has had a sincere talk with Doug, it seems. Pat is an American before being Demonrat. Doug has never shown that ability before (that I can remember)

Yup. None of those who were disloyal to Trump and the party will ever be chosen to be in Trump's cabinet.

In the case of Paul Ryan, the instigator of the sabotage, I believe Trump will make his political life miserable. And Cuz has no future in politics either.

I am thinking he’s saving that for the last debate. A card played once is never played as well again. He hit her with the emails this time around. The Clinton Foundation remains a potent issue.

I’m glad they played that card. It let Trump be Trump.

Agreed. However, he covered a lot of ground tonight. Remember, there is still one more debate to go, and I’m sure the Clinton Fraud Foundation is on his list.

Facing tremendous pressure to appear contrite and offer a genuine apology for his comments

AKA "Facing tremendous pressure to do exactly what the Democrats wanted him to do" AKA "Facing tremendous pressure to do what Republicans always do"...

Donald Trump did something better: he pivoted.

Thank God - we finally have a candidate who knows how to fight the power. If nothing else, Trump is finally playing the game the way the Democrats play it - he's not a masochist like Paul Ryan and the rest of the GOP, eager to apologize and grovel and lose.

Trump pivoted smoothly and kept on the offense and dominated without going too far or looking angry. It was easily his most substantive debate. He did a great job overall—better frankly than I thought he could do in a debate (but he’s clearly a fast learner!).

Mrs. Clinton is such a hypocrite, projecting onto to Trump her own “going low” with her failed pussy gate attack. He certainly did a great job turning the tables on her and that really made an big impression.

I remember once being much amused at seeing two partially intoxicated men engage in a fight with their great-coats on, which fight, after a long, and rather harmless contest, ended in each having fought himself out of his own coat, and into that of the other. If the two leading parties of this day are really identical with the two in the days of Jefferson and Adams, they have performed the same feat as the two drunken men.>>> thank you for posting this
