Not a Single Republican Delegate Is ‘Bound’ to Donald Trump
National Review ^ | David French

Posted on 06/10/2016 3:45:44 AM PDT by ErikJohnsky

Let’s begin with a simple proposition: As a matter of law and history, there is not a single “bound” delegate to the Republican National Convention. Not one delegate is required to vote for Donald Trump, Ted Cruz, Marco Rubio, or any other individual who “won” votes in the primary process. Each delegate will have to make his or her own choice. They — and they alone — will choose the Republican nominee.

I honestly don’t trust Donald Trump to do right by America and take his oath for the Constitution seriously. But I hope he surprises us in a good way if elected President. So I’m no diehard Trump fan so far. However I do have a pretty good understanding of mathematics. Trump needs 1237 delegates to support him on the 1st ballot. He apparently has 1542 delegates committed to him right now (source: http://www.realclearpolitics.com/epolls/2016/president/republican_delegate_count.html). This means that Kristol and others who dream of the GOP nomination going to someone else need to come up with 306 defectors or nearly 20% of Trump’s base of chosen delegates to switch elsewhere just to get past the first ballot. If they were to succeed then it would be a disaster for decades ahead for the GOP. But on the other hand if they actually could pull it off then Paul Manafort would certainly prove to be super pathetic as the odds of success for Kristol regarding the First Round are no better than they’d be for a Super Bowl team who finds themselves down 42-0 with 5 minutes left in the 4th quarter.

In the meantime I think the real political thinkers are moving on to the reality that the November 2016 election is going to be a contest between Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump. Voters are going to have to decide who is going to put America and the Constitution first. For example, if Donald Trump is in the Executive Branch will we see him setting up a private email server in his bathroom closet at home to send super-classified emails back-n-forth from his Blackberry in an easy way for the Chinese/Russian and other foreign powers to easily snoop? If Trump were to do that then he ought to be toast.

Priceless, SMH, you have to be kidding. I trust him a hell of a lot more than I would ever think of trusting hillary. I can't imagine him sitting by and watching for hours on end as four Americans are slaughtered right before his eyes and him doing nothing about it, I can't imagine him then lying about it to the American people, I can't imagine him then looking into the eyes of those men's families and lying again. SMH. I'll take my chances with him thank you very much.

The GOP would not be stupid enough to thwart the will of the people.

I wouldn't take that bet.

Way to compete for the most unfavorable person title with whatshername Shultz.

The paragraph above contradicts much of what you’ve been told about the presidential nominating process, and it even contradicts state law in multiple jurisdictions, but state law does not govern the Republican party.

I see.

December 2016:
Bill Kristol said today “The Electoral College should recognize the error the people have committed, and vote for Mitt Romney instead of President-Elect Trump.”

Does French realize that Trump could very well run as Independent, the heck with the Republican party.

And that spells the END for the useless bunch of them “professionals”, the whole politicians and their hanger-ons.

Trump should drop Ryan as chair and put a loyalist in. They are all too willing to try some funny business and screw his 13 million votes

It's a line from the Havamal, supposedly orders from Odin himself how to conduct themselves. Some of it Christians would approve, some of it is straight Michael Corleone, a bunch of proverbs, a lot of mysticism, mostly common sense.

Poor David French.

Trapped in the car Kristol drove off the cliff.

“What a lovely view, Mr. Kristol” is all he can say, as the car plummets to the bottom.

Funny how Conservative are suddenly holding Trump to a MUCH higher degree of purity than they did Bushes, Romney and Mccains. None of which cared about Constitution either. Trump is to the RIGHT OF ALL GOP candidates since Reagan

“If these delegates do not vote the way they were intended to vote, we will see the biggest tarring-and-feathering event one could imagine.”

LOL.. nope. What we will see is a bunch of Conservatives blaming someone like Ted Cruz. Then they will go back to complaining and doing absolutely nothing.

If I learned one thing on FR in the last 14 years is we are all bluster. And I have to admit, I am in that club. Difference between us and liberals is, liberals will burn down the place if they are not happy with an outcome. Conservatives have jobs so we don’t do things like that.

And what is truly sad about all of this is we have the guns. If San Jose happened again and there were twenty of us there, the outcome would have been different. It would have been, “this is why we need the second amendment. To defend ourselves and our country against foreign aggressors.” Then we show pictures of the illegals.

Sorry for the morning rant. No coffee and this is the first article I read.

The state pays for the primary elections, so I would think that the state’s laws hold sway.
